It looks like you gentlemen found some interesting stuff while I was engaged in my mycological pursuits over the last week.

Never realized how many makes/model/edition... of Kelly True Temper axes there are.

I literally got "axe fatigue" when I was harvesting images of old hardware catalog pages and would get to the "axe" sections. I had to just give it up - just stop - there were so many.

/ The chintzy socket set is Oxwall. But it's complete, unused, with a cardboard insert. There are two people on the planet who have a funny bone for these small vintage classic Kmart class toolsets as collectibles, and the other person is @four.cycle lol

That one in the molded plastic box is a bit more on the "rare-ish" side (for Oxwall) and it looks like you managed to find one with good hinges, good latch, and no crack across the clear plastic lid?
(I looked for two years for a Meteor set in such good condition and finally had to compromise for "eroded silkscreened graphics".)
Really an excellent find, sir.

Doesn't look "standard" to me at all. Love the little honeydripper driver. Does that file say "HANDEE" on that tiny clip? Any markings at all on any of the other pieces in that kit?

A forged tack lifter? For those really hard-to-pull carpet tacks, right?

Further research was required to find out how they use hog rings to fasten upholstery--who knew?

Also used for fencing, apparently. Still a big seller. The Decker Mfg. Co. in Keokuk, Iowa still makes "Hill's Patent" hog ring pliers (and rings!)

Cute girl... had no idea who she was or what all the hub-bub was about until after I headed back down 101.

10 NOS 1951 3/8” extensions $19 plus tax at Kitts.

$4 each for the 12” Plomb extensions and $1 each for the Snap-on and Plomb 5” extensions.

I just finally got the Cosmoline off those extensions. I had to edit my post. The shorter extensions were 5”.

After I wire wheeled the Cosmoline off, I put Fluid Film on them.

Those are likely all wartime tools that were treated with cosmoline and repacked by the military in 1951. Many went on to be sold as surplus. I have had quite a few repacks

After I wire wheeled the Cosmoline off, I put Fluid Film on them.

If anyone has to remove cosmoline in the future, the “easy button” old school GI solution is gasoline and a parts brush. It also helps to set the part/tool in the sun to warm the cosmoline first…especially if cleaning out an old rifle barrel.

Carb cleaner also works, and I suppose that brake cleaner would, as well.

Driving home from running an errand I saw a small toolbox on the curb for trash pickup. It was obviously roached and not salvageable but I stopped to look inside anyway in the hope there were some goodies left inside. It was empty but in a box next to it were these pipe tools. I almost left them behind but I thought maybe in the future they could come in handy if I decide to build something using metal pipe for a framework.

Stoddard solvent, kerosene, or diesel will also soften cosmoline, but at a slower rate than the more volatile agents, but they are safer.

Finally got a chance to dig into the $20 box of goodies I got Sunday. Almost all metric and painted green.

A few loose items including a couple HM wrenches …


About 40 sockets … mostly Taiwan, but a few fleet and Thorsen. The non-painted ones are Snap-On.

Finally, a Utica 8” adjustable, a Crescent 6” adjustable, and Crescent Cee-Tee pliers.

Not for me. I have bottom fed the vast majority of my Snap-on from garage/estate sales and flea markets…

Mathematically, mine may have cost more in time and gas… but, the secondary market has allowed me to upgrade my tools as I have the money to do so.

It's been pretty dry here weather and tool wise as well.
This morning I took a gamble & drove a little further than I normally would and was first in the driveway, & was able to pick with no competition for an hour.
This lot for $40.

From there, I drove through 3 neighborhood sales getting diddly, & on the way home stopped at a TOA and picked up this
Monkey Wards, Lakeside embossed hatchet.
Thought it was cool.

The Lakeside hatchet and RR anvil jump out at me. someone spend some time on that RR anvil - Flat top even - and the Lakeside looks to be in really great condition, even the haft seems easily recovered.

Suckage for those two alone!

Good digging sale today with some keepers. The Norlund was between garage wall studs behind many planks of wood. The other tool guy was not happy when I yanked it out after 20 min of plank relocation. A cool egg timer I dont need but had to grab it.
$50 each on the tractor seat and Norlund and all totaled $157 I never thought I would find a NOS Norlund. The Kelly Perfect is in descent shape.

There was a sum total of ONE yard sale sign up in town today--actually, several signs for the one sale. All were posted parallel to the road, so they were only visible for an instant while passing. I stopped, got out and walked back to read one. It indicated a "huge indoor sale" on the highway in the direction of Joseph, the next town down the road about six miles away. Well, I drove all the way into Joseph without seeing hide nor hair of the sale. I drove back slowly, paying attention to any indication of a sale, like too many cars parked in front of a building. Nothing. I later found out it was at our local "mini mega church", the one place on the road where a lot of cars parked wouldn't be noticed. It also appeared to be a "vendor sale" with modern **** and trinkets. No loss, except for the time and miles.

This gamification of finding the sales around here is getting old.

So I headed down the other direction to a local honey-hole. I intended to go two towns down the road and hit two holes, but traffic sucked (hunting season), so I stopped at the first and called it a day.

Now, this honey hole has produced a lot for me in the past, generally at good prices. It has two buildings--one a ware-house-sized shed with natural light and no heat (cold and dark in the winter months), with the shed absolutely full of mostly vintage tools! Unfortunately, the new owners, after dropping the previously ridiculous prices (this place used to be called the "used tool museum" due to the "never sell" pricing) have discovered Ebay pricing. The wife informed me that asking top Ebay prices made sense, as I wouldn't have to pay shipping!

Anyhow, after a couple of hours of wandering, picking up cool tools, thinking, putting the over-priced cool tools back down, repeat, I came out with just these two things (that seem to have been missed in the recent re-pricing push), and a fairly healthy wallet.

The pliers are "Samson Lever Jaw Wrench". Never seen them before and the "bullet" adjuster caught my eye. I'll get them cleaned up tomorrow--or when I do.

The metal canister is a Harmic Bes(?)et Alcohol Blowtorch. Again, too cool to pass up and not over-priced.

I figured I might as well try to fire 'er up, so I replaced the filler cap gasket, added some 98% ethanol gave it a try:





It takes a bit to get going, as it's self-pressurizing.

Unfortunately the next thing that happened was the alcohol starting getting forced out through the large wick, rapidly covering the entire torch with flaming alcohol. Fortunately, alcohol is extremely easy to extinguish--I blew it out.

I've never run one of these before, so maybe I'm not holding my mouth right or something. When I pulled off the filler cap (bottom), this is what I saw:



Not knowing just how to fill it, I removed the cap from the larger wick and gave both chambers a few big squirts from my shop bottle of ETOH. Maybe I over-filled it? Dunno.

I'm off to do the research I should have done before trying to light it....

Hit an estate sale down the street from work on my lunch. It was one of those pay for garage stuff at the garage, pay for inside stuff inside. There were tools in the basement and garage.

Outside I paid $15 for these:



Then inside I paid $4 total for these.

One box of pliers was marked $6 each, the scissors were 50 cents each for small, $1 each for large. So in my head I was at $20. I’m not sure where/how she came up with her total, but she said “looks like $4”.

Over the last few days, I have hit maybe half a dozen sales (even on Wednesday!) and while most of them were complete busts, I did manage to pick up a few things here and there:

A box of P&C puller parts, working Fluke 21iii*, Armstrong boring bar, Blackhawk socket and these:

(re)Prints of vintage Tour De France posters. All told, I have $60 for all of that, like I said, spread out over the last few days.

*when found it had, as I guessed, a dead battery, but I simply could not test it to find out. Hence a very nice price drop.

I was way bogged down with my route today. There was an estate sale on route but just no time. I managed a brief Habitat lunch break.

Left with a 4” Crescent wrench and Craftsman single end box wrench. I don’t remember the origin of these. Table saws? I have 3 or 4 of them now .

Different Habitat stop earlier in the week netted Stanley and Craftsman 1/4” nut drivers, a Bon-E-Con socket, and Philadephia Manufacturing Co (unmarked) 1/4” spinner. In all the excitement I thought it was 9/32, but no. The fat shank gives that effect. What were they thinking when making this?

The Robinson S-adjustable is quite cute, and is in good shape. Not common. Both ratchet work well. Most sockets were in bags, and I found these loose in the bottom of a cardboard box.

Yeah, Outlaw. They have some GPAs, too. Wanna pay %135 for an un-fettled, '70s 200A? How about $65 for an unfettled 530 in rough shape (but with canister)? $150 for a fettled 220D?

I need to do a video of a walk-through some time. The crappy $150-300 totally unrestored hand planes always amuses me....

Those of you all who know where this is, know (I'm aware of at least one of you).

BTW--Another reason I cut my trip short was the Toy was acting up--or, rather, down. I tried to pass a slow truck at one point and seemed to run out of juice at about 65 mph (really short passing areas). On the way home, it felt like it was short a cylinder or two. I didn't have time to look last night, but this AM, I got under the hood. Two high-tension (spark plug) wires had fallen completely off the distributor cap! The old Toy actually doesn't do all that bad on two cylinders....
