Jay_Dub, nice box. I never saw the top one like that. What model is it (Top box)?
I suspect that the model is going to be stamped on the back panel of the box (though sides are possible too)

Thanks. I haven't been able to find anything stamped on it. I'm going to get at it with a really high density LED light and see if I can find a number. From what I've read, if there is no stamp, it is likely 40's or 50's, but that is just a guess.

I'm a vintage tools and toolbox junkie like most here I guess. Glad to have found this site. I recently picked up what I believe is a 50's Snap On set. I cannot find a date stamp on this. I also cannot find another double door, 8 drawer top box. Seems to be a bit of a unicorn. If anyone has any info on it, I'd be most appreciative. I have checked all the catalogues on collecting snap on, to no avail, save for the bottom box that seems pretty easy to identify.Set.jpg
In the 1955 catalog, the tool chests still had the square badge, in 1958, they had switched to the chrome script like we see on yours. In the 1958 catalog though, they had switched to the turned down lip drawer pulls instead of handles attached to the front of the drawers like yours has, so I would guess '56 or '57. I'm no help on the model # though.

The first box is my work box. Don't know how long they made them but it's at least 25 yrs old as I have been retired 15. Too danged big to move and everybody wants to steal it if you sell so I kept it. Plus, where in the HeXX would I put all the tools that are in it!! Second box is a used snappy box I bought to go on top of that old Huot three drawer out in the garage. It's in one of the sheds now. Not REALLY sure it's even Snappy by the sticker! Third box was my DAD'S from probably the 40's when he was turning wrenches at the Buick dealer before he moved up. It's used to store stuff for the lathe that it's sitting under.

Yeah, there are 3 style top boxes in the 58 cat. Rolled, chrome, and the handles like mine. I'm just stumped on the 8 drawer config. Can't find it anywhere. There is a guy on eBay selling an 8 drawer, but it isn't, it's a 6, not sure why he has 8 in the description, maybe to get more lookieloos. Thanks.

How about this one... purchased back about 15 years ago or so off of Craigslist for about $30 (I think) with quite a few tools inside (some of which were real gems) and some paperwork, mostly from the '60's.

An old Boeing machinist box (I live a few miles from the Boeing plant), given to their machinists, with a printed label that has his name, and social security number (blocked out).

This has been on my dresser since I bought it. Pocket knives, keys, other special trinkets and gifts etc.

A few years after I started my career as a machinist, but obviously this box never became my "work box"

It's amazing what you find when you didn't realize you were looking for something.

Picked up in a junk store... I didn't even know I needed this...

It's in pretty nice condition overall.

I also found a Kennedy TC-14 at another store... but the seller wanted WAY too much for it, so I left it there.

Over the last couple of weeks, I've taken two crusty Kennedys...

Cleaned and painted... and assembled into this...

Stacked, they take up half as much floor space, and this gets the hutch up where I don't have to get on the floor to see what's in there.

Very smart. I like that idea. Plus, you don't have to worry about your top till becoming a collecting point for clutter.

I like that too, but i hope you are taller than I am, as that would be close to 6" taller than I could deal with for the top drawers!

I'm 6'-4" tall and the very top is just below my chin... so the top drawers are still useable for me.

I do plan to put the most used tools in the middle drawers and lesser used tools in the upper and lower drawers.

I'm needing to empty this box out...

...and de-rust it and get it painted before it falls apart. I think it is still structurally sound, but won't be for long if the rust isn't stopped. This box came to me with my South Bend lathe and was pretty rusty when I got it.

An old Boeing machinist box
Spectacular!
You know it was there when they were cranking out the b17’s and the b29’s for the war effort.
Probably, but the logo is actually older than that. At least according to several sites I checked, including their own, which pin that one to the 1930-1940 timeframe. I would defer to anyone more well-versed. I was just curious for the same reason (wondering if it was wartime), and that's just what I found in a casual search.

I appreciate the research! I never tried to date it myself. I have considered trying to find any descendants, assuming they're local, and asking if they're interested in having it. I've had it for years and really love it, but if it meant more to a grandchild etc, I'd be happy to turn it over. Just not sure how I'd go about doing it.

Yes the logo is older than wartime but I could see it being there during the war in use.

Totally. I wasn’t arguing either just speculation. This is a bit out of my wheelhouse anyway but it wouldn’t stop me from buying this box if I found it 👍

Have a few that I recently acquired that I plan on restoring:

- 1950's Craftsman Saw Box
- (Unknown Age) Kennedy Built Craftsman Middle Box
- (Unknown Age) Kennedy Built S-K Machinist Box

Started working on the middle box, but I'm hoping to get a new sand blasting cabinet for X-Mas, so I may be holding out before tackling the other two. Currently I have a gravity fed sand blaster, but its very messy.

Need to find the correct S-K green in hammered texture, and period correct emblem, doing research now. Never done an S-K before . . .

Shot the clear coat on the Craftsman middle box today, sitting in the garage to dry. Cleaned up the hardware and cleared it too. Thought about painting those too, but I like a little patina. Lock and key have been cleaned up and are deep soaking in oil. Still blows me away this $24 thrift store find had the original key.
