Those of you who participated may remember this...

Hello, my generous GJ pals.

I am doing a quick solicitation for tool donations for a care package to be sent out. I'm not looking for anything rare or expensive, but if anyone has one or two cool vintage or used tools in good condition that they would like to contribute to the cause, it would be a spiffy gesture of kindness.

PM me for details if you are game. I'd like to get this going ASAP.

Well I was the unsuspecting recipient of this incredible display of generosity from Garage Journal members. Back at the end of August, I was hospitalized for an abnormally high heart rate, 140. I had been dealing with an accelerated heartbeat for awhile, so I went to the doctor, he sent me to the ER with a referral to see the cardiologist there, and they admitted me right away. With a heart rate that high, they don't mess around. They gave me drugs to get my heart rate down, then a diuretic later that evening to flush the fluid out of my system, mostly my lungs. At that point, I felt much better, and to be honest, was ready to get out of the hospital the next day, Friday, but the doc wasn't having any of that. I stayed throughout the weekend, and was released on Monday. I have five different prescriptions, but the good news is the drugs have been working well, and hopefully I can cycle off these medications soon. I imagine I'll have to stay on a couple, but maybe I can get off the others. I've never been one to take medication regularly, though I know this is very important and haven't missed a single dosage.

After I got home from the hospital and logged on here, there was a PM from Dave about something else. In my reply I mentioned the hospital stay, though in much less detail than what I mentioned here.

I saw the tool donation thread a few days later, and told him I'd look to see what I had, and also, ironically, thought I had a good idea who it was for. Dave told me that was a good guess, but I was off. Now looking back on it, I'm sure he got a good laugh.

Anyway, like I told Dave in a PM yesterday, I saw the box on the front porch, lugged it in (damn heavy!), opened it and was floored. Here's what I saw...

I currently have opened all the packages, and all the tools are spread out in my living room...I'm single so I can get away with that! :spit:

As I told Dave yesterday, I was just speechless. I was going to thank the contributors by PM, then I realized there were just too many of you and the least I could do was post a new thread. The generosity of the members here is incredible, and I'm almost embarassed to have all these vintage tools to play with. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, all of you who participated or were just sending your prayers. My prognosis looks good and I'm optimistic I will be fully recovered very soon. :)

I will try to get some more pics of your generosity posted soon after I get them together for a 'group' photo. :lol_hitti

And this completes the project. Thanks for coming forward and posting this, John. I know it isn't always a person's first choice to speak publicly about personal matters.

Looks like the box arrived in essentially the same condition as when I sent it, which I am glad about. I was sweating that shipment.

And to think, you thought I was going to send you some old Ford brochures; it was the only way I could think of to get your address without raising any suspicions!

Take care, my friend, and enjoy all those damn tools!

Hey Lookin, glad your doing better.I know it can be a long struggle to get the heart rate under control. My dad has been fighting that fight for several years now.Hopefully yours won't take nearly as long. It's hard to believe how tired a person gets so quickly when the heart is doing an abnormal rhythm.Good luck!

Well,

Now I'm glad that you got the rails for the other box. From the looks of things, you will be needing it.....

When do we break ground for the new garage that you need to store tools in????

Only on the GJ would a package be sent to someone just out of the hospital that was exercise to lift into the house!

I actually forgot about this whole thing and am sorry to say I did not join in. But my thoughts are with you for a complete, if medicated recovery. I know heart issues are a very scary thing.

I could not think of a more deserving member.

*snip*

Yeah, had me laugh when I read the recipients story. A nervous laughter of relief mind since I didn't become an accomplis of something bad... :lol_hitti

Those SO diagonal cutters are nice. I had never held SO pliers before, and I kept fondling that pair. They felt a lot beefier and solid than any pair of Channellock dykes (or is it dikes?) I have ever owned.

You should get a pair, I like them as well or better than my Knipex ones. By the way, you can always tell us old farts...We still refer to them as "dykes". If I say that in front of the young guys, their ears perk up and they start looking around going "where?"....

I would not want to ask what a pair costs.

So, that name is spelled with a "y"? I was unsure. My dad (old-school plumbing and HVAC guy) always called them that, so the name feels familiar to me. Young guys don't use that term? I wonder where it came from, anyway...?
