How many of you all are the one that tries to grab the freebees from work? I have several items that were on the way to the dumpster at work. Shelving, lights all kinds of metal etc.

I've recently been trying to battle the urge and let more of it go. I accumulate **** faster than I can use it.

There is one other guy at work that is a 'competitor', and sometimes we 'fight' over stuff getting tossed, and whoever has a more solid idea/use for it at their house/garage usually goes home with it. While the rest of the people at work laugh and don't want anything to do with the stuff usually..

As of this week the cabinet in this pic is going away. And it would already have been in my truck if he didn't want it too. Damn, he didn't really want either until someone else there was talking about it costing around $2000 then his eyes lit up. I have the perfect spot for it and in my mind I had already stripped it down and repainted it..

Look at this bad boy~!

I don't score freebies but I do occasionally get some very good deals on odd office furniture that is no longer used (all Steel case) brand. 5 drawer locking file cabinet with keys $20 each no dents. Recent scores was a Steelcase bookcase with 2 sliding doors like new $25 and (2) 2 drawer lateral file cabinets $20 each (no scratches or dents). I'll probably be incorporating the lateral files into a bench.

"I swear, he just fell in the dumpster. I don't know how he got that bump on his head." :lol_hitti

Pretty sweet cabinet.

I don't work in a location that offers much of a chance for freebies. :(

Ket-tek - That cabinet is very Jack Olsen-esque!

Hutch - Did you get the dog at work, too? I'll bet he thinks that's HIS seat, too.

Guilty! Work was doing a major remodel when I was building my garage.
The dumpster donated a commercial steel roll up door - complete with 3 phase controller, a commercial man door, electric chain fall, shelving, benches, fans - all sorts of good junk. Back then it was easier to get a pass for stuff - especially if it was in the dumpster - it's alot harder now.
But probably the BEST item I got from work was a Clausing Lathe 5900 - complete with 6 jaw buck chuck - they made me buy that one - price?? a paltry 100 skins!!! It took a weeks work to fix the VS pulley and repair the goobered up motor shaft, but today it works perfectly!!! They replaced it with a new Sum Flung Dung POS - man did I make out on that one!!!!

The blue cabinet and the ble Vidmar cab on the left were both free from a previous employer. The Vidmar is now my toolbox. The top came with it too!

We just had a good laugh about this at work.

About 15 years ago, we had a heavy duty cleaning at work. Several days of dumpster diving. Fast forward 5 years and one of the guys is building a new garage and starts dumping most of the stuff he scored. I sift through and pick up alot of it. Fast forward 10 years and I am moving. I dump alot of things that I haven't touched since I picked them up. I was stopped by one of the new guys and he said "You're not throwing that out are you?". and he proceeded to pick through.

It never gets tossed, just moved.

She didn't come from work, but she grew up at work with me, she still comes in every now and then.
Actually, funny story - I kinda got the dog at work, because my wife bought her while I was out in the field working and "gave" her to me (for valentines day was the story) when I came out of the field and back to our facility. Unfortunately she wasn't a freebee!

This was her first time in the seat, and I think she liked it, we have another dog who used to hang out in that seat all the time when it was inside the house. I should probably take it off the bottom cabinet so she hangs out in it more!

Yeh, I'm that guy too.
But not where I work; if you get caught scrounging stuff, you're fired and you will go to jail, for a long time.
You oughta see the stuff that gets thrown away, it 'd make a grown man cry.

Not when pretty much everything is inventoried, and accounted for on its way to destruction. Of course pretty much all we throw out are bags of shredded paper, and computer equipment.

I've picked up stuff before, but it dropped when I started riding a motorcycle most of the time, and when I realized I rarely used the stuff. I try to reduce the **** I store.

I never find anything on the road.. My cousin always finds the good scores though. He's gotten mover/car trailer sized ratchet straps, a few tow truck J-hooks and chains, an IR impact wrench one time, etc..

All I ever see is dryrotted halfs of busted bungee cords. :(

I'm a certified dumpster diver for sure. I usually come back from the scrap metal place with more than I dropped off!

It HURTS to see what get's put in the scrap metal bins or recycled at some of the factories I've worked in. For me, that could be lawn mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, or ATV's. Crushed into a cube. Every once in a while we'd have an auction on old tools or parts racks, but that is rare. Otherwise, nothing can go to employees.

No dumpster diving for me (I work for the Federal Government). Everything is properly excessed. If we do decide that it goes into the dumpster, it becomes the property of the trash collector.

Those SteelCase desks go for a mint these days. My friend was looking at one at a fancy vintage furniture place a few weeks ago.

Hell yes. I scored 26 drop in troffler lights from a job once. New. Nobody else wanted them because the boxes said they were 277V. I looked closer and they were 120-277V. I put a dozen in my basement. Traded or sold the rest. I put free light fixtures in my garage, and the unfinished part of my basement. I just rearranged my garage and put lights under my cabinets. I also put up four foot power strips and put my air compressor on a switch. I got all of the wiring, boxes, fixtures.......free. I had to buy some lamps and a couple of cord ends. Total cost, around $50.
Can't beat that.

Well, I work for a credit union. If we ever decide to dump a bunch of those rectangular pieces of paper from the vault I'd love to bring home a load!!

I've drug home a lot of things, metal storage racks for my shop, metal hanging cabinets, nice free standing heavy gauge metal cabinets, 2-3 yrs old snow blowers. My company relocated to a new building and corp said not to bring anything used. They took the same approach with me in a year and scrapped me along with 3,000 other employees worldwide.

They are so concerned about complaints of favorites at my work, they will not allow us to take anything at anytime, If I get "caught" doing it, its instant termination!

I work for a government department- we throw away thousands of dollars of desks and other office equipment. Most does not get auctioned, simply disposed of. Employees are not allowed to buy this stuff, and questions get asked if we ask... such a waste. :(

For those in government employ, do you do work that is classified in nature? Because then it makes at least a bit of sense.

Not that I expect anything the government does to make sense, though I do have to remind myself of that at least once a week, it seems.

I know what you mean. There was a time when I could have picked up as many desks as I wanted for cheap. The desks took up too much room so I never got any. But I have (8) of the 5 drawer files plus the (3) other newer items I recently brought home. I've also got a line on a couple of additional items at work that I should be able to get for pretty cheap. The SteelCase stuff is very strong and pretty much bullet proof.

I went back to work in our warehouse. But when I was driving a truck I would look behind all the grocery stores as well. It is amazing how much cool stuff they dispose of too. I got a John Bean 8950 tire machine at Sam's club for free. And they were relieved someone would take it. Of all the countless freebees I have drug home. That is my best score.
