2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

Asked about the price on a mower in the garage at an Estate sale yesterday. $50 if I can get it out from the hoard of **** in front of it. I have been looking for a good used walk behind snapper and this dont get much better. Tag on mower is dated 2017. I asked a few questions about the sale and house was left as is since 2017 when owner passed away. And yes I have the catcher.

Finally on the board for this year. Won an auction for sealed GE fridge water filters (ours don't have a generic option) for $75/lot of four. Considering these are usually $50leach, fairly happy (not pictured). Hit up an estate sale today, and found the following. Just missed out on a $15 Foredom grinder ...

Big Ratchet straps, $20 for the bucket. At least 4 sets, all look well taken care of and clean. No rips, all j hooks.

Garland #8 hammer. Plastic face looks great, rawhide side has seen some abuse. $3.50

And a NIB Power Tool bench from Sears. Crowntop era from the instruction manual. Plastic straps were cut so contents could be verified. (Not listing price as I may be reselling this).


And I have a lead on a super rare piece, if it comes thru will post tonight/tomorrow.

Edit: Weather is delaying pickup of the rarer piece until Mon. But he is holding it for me, and promised me first dibs.

Here’s my Saturday haul from the garage of a deceased carpenter. Two sons running the show, “not much dad could not do”, primarily a carpenter, but did plumbing and some fine woodworking too. Could not go yesterday, but they opened at 700 today, and I was on property at 715. Lots of power tools in well used condition, including five Skil 77s, but mostly stuff I didn’t need. As I walked up, they were bringing out a nice 5’ two man crosscut saw, and poking fun at each other, so suspected would be a fun shopping trip. They were reminiscing about dad’s skills, projects they did together, this tool was used for…. etc. Coping.

Ended up with a BNIOB Dewalt DW682k biscuit jointer (with a metal box inside the cardboard), a Bosch GLL 100 GX green laser level kit from 2018, batteries still working, the 5’ saw, and two beater jackets for yard work or dog walking. Not shown was a handful of carpenter pencils from a local lumber yard he loved. They had another case inside, and about a 1/2 case they were handing out by the handful with purchase. Not a steal, but reasonable prices on everything.

I found a moving sale 6 minutes from home in the Berkeley Hills. There wasn’t much left by the time I arrived but I brought home a 1946 14” Ridgid pipe wrench, a partial can of Acetone and some steel wool with very little outlay. As a bonus, I passed three deer walking down a sidewalk in the neighborhood.

Also just picked up a little A1 Mini from FBMP for my son to mess around with, and print at home. For $100, hard to beat it! Guy said he put maybe 30 prints thru it, mostly ended up using his A1 for cosplay stuff (helmets, etc).

Still have the work X1s if I need anything more than PLA.

Estate sale. When I first got there less than an hour after opening I went to the garage and it appeared no one had yet sifted through the cabinet or all the boxes lined on shelves running along 2 sides of the garage. I was hoping for automotive related tools and supplies but it was pretty much lesser household items. In the estate sale ad a tall metal multi drawer cabinet was pictured right next to a workbench. When I got to the basement shop the cabinet was gone along with all the tools. I didn't find much there but at least I didn't leave empty handed. I do like the vintage metal Sears brake fluid container and the Triplett VOM model 666-R.

Today's Saturday run started with the HS Flea.

The big scores there was the Optimus 99 and a point oiler patented on 1904.

Also found was a Drill index - for $3 - a Square, Klein lineman's -1948 -, and another Frank & Warren - DOE - this time - $2, - a Liddel 50 ft tape -oops that was part of the last estate sale! - , a Stanley driver for a buck, and I ran into one of the photographers from the local race tracks, who had a couple boxes of unsold buttons, and got 2 for Lloyd Beard, the car button was the first car I pit crewed on for him, ther were 2 other cars as well.




The Optimus was complete (with a drawing of a Lepricon?), and had the hard to find accessory pump and pump cap, so I was happy! Paid $30:

After the Flea, I hit a local Estate sale, and got this 1945 Army entrenching tool - I hoed it up, and the seller held up 2 fingers - Sold!:





The second garage sale there was a bust, not setup So I drove home, and past home to the ES I was at yesterday, and looked for the missing bit of the 203 Stanley plane. I spent about 30 minutes in that shed doing a deep dive search and finding stuff I missed or passed on yesterday while looking for it, and finally found it! Sitting in plain sight on a lower bench shelf!

And Assembled! I'm happy, as now I can proceed to cleanup and sharpening. This might be my oldest Stanley plane? I've never done an inventory or any research on them.



And the rest of the day 2 haul from the ES - Fiskars scissors, I've never seen Fiskars with the finger hook, Corsair scratch Awl, old Williams DOE, Proto LA DOE but its broken on one end, Craftsman extension, Hatchet handle Stanley driver and General calipers -the small driver has no makers mark but the grip I think is Bakelite?:



HOME 3-1/2" vise, tent pole section, Wedges for hammer handles,another wrench clamp - maybe for the Dunlaps from yesterday? And the boxed bearing fit the shaft from yesterday, old school skate key and the big red box has both wood joiners and a bunch of small hooks I tossed in with. fuse box with 4 of 5 fuses, - Oh yes, this is where the Luddel 50 ft tape came from too.



Lastly another black steering wheel cover. All told $20 for all.

The plane looks like a Stanley 203, probably made between 1901 and 1917. Nice find.

Edit: they didn't start making this plane until 1912 apparently, so 1912-1917.

Fiskars scissors, I've never seen Fiskars with the finger hook,

I have a pair with out a finger hook now, the dog chewed it off. I think they were aimed at home hair trimming, if I remember back 30+ years. Wanna be barber shears.

Between snow here in the valley, which is not unheard of but will shut things down, and spending the week house sitting for a friend of the wife's who had a family emergency and needed her two little dogs looked after, there was neither the time nor the opportunity. But estate sales go one, and after hitting three of them, this was my loot:

Snap-on deep 11/16" from 1950, engraved with PG&E. Some days you get the bear, other days the bear gets you.

EDIT: corrected date from Jan to Oct, and added patent No. & link - patent was for the lever cap - Has the patent date of 10/12/97 for the 591,663 patent, so has to be early. it would have been dead in 1914/15?

I thought patents were 20 years.

I would have guessed that it is earlier than 1912. I think the 1912 date comes from it being the first catalog that mentions it, but it is barely mentioned in that catalog, so it might have been around longer than that.

Interesting that it has the handi-grip sides, but the 220 didn't since they are so similar. I have a 220 from the same era and it has flat sides.

I was researching 203 planes a little more and noticed several ebay listings with B casting marks on the lever cap. Apparently that mark was used from 1900 to 1904, maybe some evidence that the 203 was being made earlier than 1912.

I agree that makes sense; this one has the "B" casting mark you described, so I believe we have narrowed production to 1900-1904 based on th "B" casting mark on the Lever cap. Patent is 1897 - and ran for 17 years at that time - the joker is the Sweetheart era blade, but that could be a replacement.

Going back and finding the blade adjusting block made my morning yesterday after stupidly setting it aside on Friday, thinking "this doesn't belong here"

So Happiest about this plane, the Optimus 99, and the 1904 patent oiler from yesterday for the two days...

I agree with the earlier date range. Definitely not sweetheart era, so replacement blade. It's not as common as the 220, so that's cool.

My 220 has the S casting, so it's a few years earlier maybe 1897 to 1899. I put some other block planes in the handplanes thread recently.

Maybe someone had evidence of the patent date staying on for a few extra years or just went by a picture in the catalog or added 20 instead of 17. Lol. Crazy how much info is out there for Stanley planes, but if you try to research other brands there's very little to be found.

Walking Ghost today and a curbside find was a Klein Bag stick out of the trash container at the curb. Inside was a Dewalt Impact 20v, Milwaukee bit set, Ryobi drill and battery(not pictured) and a unmarked ballpeen hammer. The Dewalt battery charged fine ,haven't went downstairs to check the Ryobi yet but lights on charger were positive.
