Since a few of you are mentioning FBMP, I only joined FB for access to FBMP.

Out of the blue today, they're trying to force me to let them take 3-D pics of my face, through a 3rd party company, for "age verification" claiming it's due to laws limiting access to online purchases.

Are they F-ing serious??? I've never searched for anything beyond tools, garage sales and boats.

Anyone else having to deal with this nonsense???

Mike

Eff them and the horse they rode in on. NO one is taking 3-d pics of me for a lame reason like that.

I'd also be flagging that as Phishing as it likely is...

I buy and sell a lot on FBMP and I've never heard of such a thing. Did the request come from a Nigerian Prince?

Unfortunately, it's in the FB app. Just started today. When I click on the MP icon, instead of taking me to listings (like it always had before today), I get this:

Screenshot_20250228_225243_Facebook.jpg

Then this:

Screenshot_20250228_225526_Facebook.jpg

Then this, which is where I stop:

Screenshot_20250228_225538_Facebook.jpg

No obvious way to get around it, and I don't need ANYTHING on FBMP to warrant this nonsense.

Seems to be baked-in to the app now, so nothing (and no way) to "report."

"...based on the laws in your country."

That's really bizarre. What country does it think you're in? Australia and a few European countries just passed some laws restricting access to some social media sites for those under the age of 16, but nothing has been implemented yet as far as I know. And here in the US, there is no federal law, it's state by state, in a handful of states, including California, Louisiana, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Mississippi, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia, but most of those are still in process, delayed, or being contested, I think. And you're in Massachusetts, obviously, which is not even one of the states that has passed anything yet, which makes it even weirder. I know that Meta has been experimenting with Yoti as a way to forestall less passive measures (such as a digital ID card), but that's a really misleading message.

Facebook is complete BS. I never had an account. My wife helped me make a purchase several years ago. Then I made an account to make a second purchase. After couple days, during communications with a seller of course, the sob's locked my account for not having a photo of myself. It almost ruined the transaction. I uploaded a face shot of a professional wrestler and they unlocked my account. :fawk: Haven't used it since. I get it, people want to see who they deal with. If it isn't required at activation then they shouldn't be able to freeze your account and potentially cause strained relations with sellers.

Hit an estate sale this morning. Some interesting stuff, the guy clearly took some trips to Japan.

Many NOS Vessel screwdrivers (he had drawers with many more)

Some Snap-on screwdrivers and one socket

Fluke current clamp (missed out on a small Fluke multimeter but this was a nice consolation prize!)

Ratcheting crimpers

4 Koken wobble extensions (very pleased to find these)

SK ratchet, 1/4" universal and extension handle

Couple random Japanese ratchets

And an old school Weller soldering gun

I missed out on a pair of Knipex Alligators and a pair of Cobras but I'm happy with what I got. $70 for everything!

My wife was on FB many years before me. I'd have her contact sellers for me, but I think many got spooked when she said she was shopping for me, and gave them my email to follow through. So I joined just to have access to FBMP.

The issue, MikeinRI, might be that you say you are in MA, and you also say you are in RI. Obviously, it is checking to see if you have two heads.

Too funny. That's obviously not the name I use on FB.

It looks to me like you got caught up in something beta or trial released or at least new enough that not everyone is experiencing it and we might not see evidence of it here because people here have probably had preexisting accounts (which does raise questions about retroactivity).

I should probably caveat that and my post above by pointing out that I do not use FB or FBMP. I have been doing a lot of reading about legislation and social media platform practices lately, though.

My account is a year or more old at this point.

I didn't use my real DOB, or give them a cell number when I set up the account. But, how would they confirm an age from that info anyway?

I don't trust Zuckerberg with any data they don't need. WAY too many breaches over the years.

"Marketplace is for adults only." Makes one wonder who tried to sell their kids.

If they start looking at state law, they will quickly run into lots of laws stating no contract with a minor is valid.

I have the feeling this is rhetorical, and skeptical, and that you're not really asking for a technical answer, but the short technical answer is machine learning (ML). Yoti used a corpus of legally registered faces and ages, millions of them, provided voluntarily, and markers and measurements, hundreds of them, that change over time with age, to train its algorithms. It's not confirming an exact age, just confirming that the face is not younger than the minimum age requirement. Objectively, it's not perfect, but it's very good - i.e., we all know people who look younger or older than they are, but not enough to statistically throw off the algorithm above an acceptable mean absolute error. (Think about the "aging" app that people were fond of using for fun a few years ago where you could see what you look like 30 years from now, or 50 years from now. It's also akin to some basic features in facial recognition technology that is trained to recognize people trying to spoof a system by grimacing, etc, and some forensic facial recognition technology used in criminal investigations.)

Note, again, that this whole effort - and Meta (FB) is not the only one pursuing it, or using Yoti to pursue it, is actually being pursued to AVOID more active, more invasive, and potentially more abuse-prone means, such as digital ID's. They are trying to find a way to satisfy a growing crescendo of demand/legislation for more control and prevention that is short of digital ID and registration.

Not defending it, just explaining.

And full admission that I have some expertise in stand-off non-cooperative biometrics for surveillance purposes.

Of course, just like but conversely to the funny scene in a recent movie where a guy has his little brother blow into the BAC ignition lock on his motorcycle so he can ride it, someone under the minimum age could probably use his older brother's selfie to get into FBMP or other "adult" platforms. lol. There are repetition features that would eventually catch it.

But now we're really digressing. And YOU'RE the host!! (We might need an intervention from a host emeritus... :))

The problem I have is that EVERYONE has shifted to FBMP out here! The local newsrag (which is neither local or a rag anymore) uses FBMP as their classifieds. CL is dead. Nothing like Offer Up. The advertising rag out here, which was called The Nickel, is long gone. There really isn't anywhere else to go.

But FB doesn't like me for some reason. I've tried to sign up twice, attempting to keep as much of my personal data out of it (I even created a new email just for that), and twice been told that my application has been sent to arbitration--then I never hear back.

Happy Retirement, @Outlawmws!

If the whole world doesn’t go belly-up first, I’ll join you in a bit less than a year. I haven’t started counting the days, yet.

The one-month countdown to Jake’s Flea Market opening day started TODAY, so I’m pumped for that!

Midweek, a family friend dropped off this saw as a gift, rusty and missing teeth, which once belonged to their uncle. It has a Warranted Superior eagle medalion and under the rust I see it is etched with a long-C Craftman logo, so it will get some attention when the weather starts cooperating.

Day One of retirement - A slow day - only 3 sales worth looking at so far...

I had hopes for the first one but he didn't have most of the tools out, and another guy just before me bought ALL the fishing gear.

I did get a Porter Cable D handle 10A router with both 1/4" and 1/2" chucks and part of the fence. All my other routers are 1/4" and smaller, so this is an upgrade.

Portercabel-router.jpg

Also a few smalls there, Discwasher record cleaner with some odds and ends of cleaning tools and a big bottle of the D4 fluid, as well as a 45 RPM adapter marked Sansui, so he had good taste in stereo gear; plus a Whia small PH and Ace straight blade drivers.

Diskwasher-Whia-Ace-Sansui.jpg

Second stop was an estate sale but was a dud.

and last stop I had hit last sat, and nothing new I was interested in, but found a magnetic grill thermometer I'll use on a Coleman box oven, and a couple of clip on sunglasses,

I know you've heard me say several times I'm going to stop buying stuff, especially big stuff. And most of you know I have the same addiction to good deals like many of you no matter what LOL. So my Air Force buddy told me he bought a Stanley Vidmar cabinet with drawers at a surplus sale Tuesday at the local Air Force base and he might need a hand getting it. Friday morning he messages me that he's going to get it at noon and there might be unsold Vidmars I could get. My trailer was loaded with scrap so I made a mad dash to run it to the metal recycler ($39 for 600 pounds of tin and short iron) and made it on base before noon, I'm retired Air Force and have access. So he gets there and he decides to get one more and I get the other 5. FOR 50 BUCKS EACH! And yes they are full of stuff! My little 5 x 10 trailer barely got them all on there, really tight fit! So I'm unloading today, more photos later as I sort them out!

It saves a LOT of knuckle-meat over using pliers.
Here are four cotter pin pullers. From L-R: J.D. Biscayart patent 1297785 (Mar 11, 1919). This one was made by Katy. M.H. Harter patent 1422201 (July 11, 1922). E.M. Worden patent 998939 (July 25, 1911). Dorhons Co. marked pat. pend. but haven't found patent yet. There is an ad from 1947.

On Friday, I went to check out a moving sale that showed some tools in the photos. And, had I looked closer, I would have seen a machinists chest in the corner of one. No worries, because as soon as I saw it and the price they were asking, I pulled the tag, shut the drawers on it, and went to pay. And they immediately asked "what would you offer?" So, I dropped the price down 20%, they accepted, and I was out the door.

some Proto, some Snap-on, some Craftsman, a lot of ****, and the hat from a bait store. Not bad for $40.

Then I swung past a restore and picked up the following:

some blades for an Xcelite, Yankee PH1 bit, SK bit driver, and a vintage light switch.

Damn thread has gotten away from me again!
First the *****-- @3jakes and @neharr41 and @bmwrd0 just ****. @bluebolt just ***** stupendously!

Unfortunately, it's in the FB app.
There's your problem... Having been retired for the second time for--holy ****--SIX years, I'm of an age where I pretty much use my smart phone for phone calls, the occasional text and as a camera. I'm not a big app fan for all the aforementioned paranoid reasons, and also for the fact that I'm just more comfortable using my laptop for most things internet related. I don't even use the GJ app. I don't use my phone for a GPS--I plan out a route on my laptop, jot down a few notes if the way is complex, and go. This also enables me to keep my eyes on the f'ing road to catch those clowns with their nose buried in their phones as they drift into my lane! Just sayin...

Congratulations and welcome to the club to @Outlawmws!

well, I got a formal email today.
As for this, how about an anticipatory congratulations? SWMBO punched out of her GS job almost a year ago and has only now looked back (with concern) at the rest of the doing-more-with-less crowd.
