2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

After making the Flyweelers trifecta (Nov., Jan., Feb.,) this year for the first time ever, I think it’s safe to say I’m happy with my finds. If anyone cares to look back back:

Working backwards yet to catch up on posting. This is one of my favorite hauls I can think of, just for the oddities. Plus, a holy grail item I’ve been searching for for a long time.

JAN. haul:

-An interesting old Jacobson Machine Manufacturing Co Vise
From Warren, PA, 1901 patent. Already posted in the vise thread.
I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking at as I saw a dirty old vise on the ground under a seller’s table. Still a bit unsure on the swivel base status (possibly repaired to become non-swivel).
The seller told me make an offer, then tells me 5 bucks. Despite weighing my bag down, I saw the date plus how unique it looked, and couldn’t say no!

-couple Cornwell ancient/oldies
-Wardmastr 3/8” ratchet and breaker by Wright. After finding the ratchet I was happy to find the breaker to match at the seller’s large booth, and also happy to add these to the collection as I didn’t have them.
-Ridgid 3/8” ratchet by Thorsen. Another I was quite happy to add to my collection.

The following three items came from the ladies with the great antique wrench collection. These are all I could muster. I tried about every negotiating tactic I know other than begging on another item, and the girl wouldn’t budge. As I wrote back in January, prices were wild or I would have loved to bring home a bunch of stuff. They had some rarities.

-Cattaraugus Cutlery wrench/knife combo. This was a personal holy grail of mine as I never saw one in the wild and always look for them. Condition is poor, with damages. I paid up for it but nowhere near what a nice example goes for on the web. I was actually walking past their final table taking a last look and there it was! They did drop the price for me as we had chatted quite long and become friendly by then.

- Butler Elliptical Wrench (ratchet) 11/16? dr. A strange design.

-Husky socket handle ratchet. Non-working wall hanger. For the price and scarcity, had to get it.

This weekend was the Needville, TX city wide garage sale which I have been going to for the last 35 years. And it didn't disappoint! The holy grail of golf clubs is the Ping beryllium-copper irons. Very rare to find at a yard sale. So there was a pile of old clubs that I walked by, but at the last second saw a dull bronze looking iron sticking out of a box. Sure enough, it was a complete set of Ping Eye 2 Be-Cu irons from 1 thru pitching wedge! Paid $20 for those clubs. (Lee Trevino famously said if he's ever caught out in a thunder storm he'll hold a 1 iron over his head because only God can hit a 1 iron.)

Later on, there was a really nice old gentleman selling his Remington 760 Gamemaster rifle chambered in .270 Win and in excellent condition! Paid $175 for that. The serial number shows it was manufactured pre-1967. Gunbroker.com has several for sale between $800-$1k.

Finally, there was this really cool Easy Laser shaft aligning tool which I knew nothing about. Turns out it's a pretty sophisticated tool for aligning pump and compressor shafts. New they're about $5,000. Paid $100 for that. So all-in-all a great day at the Needville!

YOU ****!! Those may be the best irons ever made and the Be-Cu version is especially good. GREAT SCORE!

Thanks. Been looking for one for years. Never seen one in Buffalo either. Seen many too pricey online as I have no interest in spending that kind of money for a beautiful example, I just had the hopes of finding an example. I do wish it wasn’t broke, the grip, and the blade is also busted at the rivet, free floating in there. Still, been wanting one so long I couldn’t walk away from it.

Private Lugnutz, I'm going to flip it. The chute is complete, all the lines are good and no damage I have noticed. After I got all the lines straightened out and I had it stretched out the wind caught it and it briefly filled the canopy, the morning sun shining through the canopy was gorgeous!

OutlawMWS: I think the last silk US chutes were in early WWII.

This is the 3rd military chute I have acquired, the other 2 are flight crew emergency chutes with white, tan, green and orange panels.

Anyway a few scraps were left behind and at $30 for all I felt it was worth it for the plane. I have plenty of combination squares but never seen Starretts this large., had to grab them

Today’s UK bootsale (Translation: Trunk sale) finds from a UK finally bathed in sunshine. Todays best buy is the green 1:25 scale Citroen CX rallye is by Polistil of Italy, is missing several parts but was just 50p! Thats 65 cents! I couldnt exchange the coin quick enough

Mismatched selection of weights, but degreased and given a couple of squirt’s of U-pol zinc primer - top tip - brings them up great and wears fairly well, I using them for model building when I need a bit of weight to pin a part down. £2 @ $2.60 the 4.




Next up a Rabone Chesterman flexible measure, spot the 3 triangles on the tape which is logo for these. I love these, and pick them up when I see them. This ones a fibron so has the nylon tape rather than the metal tape. These are great for landscape measuring, fencing, concreting etc. Just a bit grubby but winds lovely (the handle folds out and has a spinning bush to hold between finger and thumb). Another £2 @ $2.60 buy. Quite a late one as its metric and imperial, they have a textured coating on a metal case. Later ones are just labeled Rabone and eventually went to a grey plastic case in the early 90’s.




£4 @$5.20 secured both a 6” Japanese made “Lobster” adjustable wrench thats seen some action but winds well, and a pair of Elliot Lucas side cutters. Sheffield made, though these smaller ones don't have a metal marking and the give-away is the branding on the side of the grips, which work well. I got a larger pair of these as an apprentice in 1991 and still use them. These still cut perfectly too, quite pleased nobody else had snapped these up.






Finally another £2 @ $2 dollar buy (I have no idea why any £2 coins refused to stay in my pocket) was this Footprint No4 plane in fair condition, but seemingly sharp. This ones just had a good squirt with gun oil and a degrease and has entered the “to-do” pile. Not the obvious Record or Stanley we get over here, and hard to date from post war to 1980’s but the deep looking chroming points to potentially an older plane. For further investigation. Footprint still exist making mainly “Footprint” wrenches and masonry chisel these days. Have a look:

I was having a major case of head-scratching deja vu and had to go to the Husky thread to jog my memory! You have another one and did a long-distance deal with Steven33 for the long plug and sockets that fit inside and we did a deep dive on the patent and design and no end cap.

One of our favorite estate sale companies had a sale in Walnut Creek this morning. It turned out to be pretty decent.
i would never leave behind a Diamond adjustable with the green cover.
Found my second Samson pair of locking pliers and a small Coes monkey wrench.
Found my second Perfect Handle pipe wrench in as many weeks. A nice early 12” carbon steel Crescent wrench.
A pretty fresh S-K 1/2” drive ratchet.

Remote haul from a Thursday estate sale. MLW was sending pix, I only found one item for me, but several for her. Only $3 for the complete haul, one clipper is Fisksrs, the other claims Ace, but sure looks Corona, missed it didn’t have a nut on the pivot screw. The Proto is a straight shank, so tolerate a little rust for that. The rest of the tools were really rusty from pix, will swing by tomorrow, give them another look.

We stopped at the closest Habitat ReStore when we were over at the next town and I did find a couple of things, a Dexter mat cutter and an Empire speed square, under $4 for both. I've wanted a mat cutter for ages and the speed square is heavier than the new ones I've seen, and my old Swanson disappeared into one of the boy's tools.

How do you know it’s wartime?

The marking. Look for line 1: "US PAT No 2,280,005" / line 2: "APR. 14, 1942" / line 3: "OTHER PAT PEND" - which refers to 2,481,866, which was applied for in May 1945. Hence, production perfectly boxed in. I've got several. But none small enough to fit in this box.

Any pictures of the box?

I posted here when I found it before and down on the VB somewhere. When I re-post it with the unit inside I will tag you.

I never posted some of the more notable LEFT-BEHINDs. Couple of Erector sets, one older, one newer, both roached. Three really nice 6-inch "Jorgensen" clamps and two massive 14-inch Phoenix clamps. Unfortunately, the guy knew the value of the "Jorgensen" name and, even though I've never heard of Phoenix, he knew the value of any clamp that big, too.
