All the valve spring compressor I have seen and used have some kind of a pocket to capture the spring?
I don't see anything like that?
It does resemble a piston groove cleaner.

Not everything was designed correct, and things became more easier to use as the years went on. This is in face a spring compressor

Most valve spring compressors I have seen are for assembling the valve and keepers in the heads. That one is for measuring the length of the springs and making sure what the compressed length is, doesn't look like it would help in assembling the heads.

I found this Sunnen flathead valve spring compressor at an estate sale on Friday. It took a couple of evaporust baths to be able to determine the brand. Must have been used hard as it has been welded back together in the jaw area. IMG_1394.jpegIMG_1395.jpegIMG_7576.png

That last valve spring compressor is used without removing the head. You use an air plug and put compressed air on the cylinder so that you can replace the valve oil seals without removing the head. Those could also be used on a valve in block engines like a flat head. There were different tools depending on what engine you were working on. The chevy overhead valve tools was just a lever the bends to reach under the rocker arm to release the keeper and remove the spring and replace the seat. Lots of old engines had problems with valve seals and I did several of those seal replacements over the years.
