Here's an idea of what you Morgan sells for new.

It's interesting to note that it does not appear as though Morgan has taken any meat out of their vises in the past 70 years or so. With the swivel base, mine weighs right at 150 lbs according to my high-accuracy certified-for-commerce bathroom scale. :)

Their catalog weight on a new non-swivel 6" as 128 lbs. The swivel parts are about 20 lbs.

I found another place online the other day that listed it at $380 :)

This price sheet I have is about 5 years old. I'm thinking in todays economy, its somewhere between the two. I don't think many new vises are selling today. (Unrelated Trivia) Yost Vice Co. has a total of 12 employees.

Picked up a Columbian 5" multi-purpose vise today. It was in a good shape, mounted on a 2" hitch insert, weights about 50 lbs. It looks very similar to Wilton's 66669 multi-purpose vise. They maybe are related...any idea?

Unfortunately, the handle is bent slightly, still usable. Any suggestion of how to correct it, or shall I bother at all?

Bent handle: Sledge hammer/anvil... or if you have a lathe just make a new one :)

Are you going to brighten it up a bit? Not keen on black vises, but that's just my pref.. :)

I'll post pics of my latest Athol when it shows up tomorrow. It's 55 miles away & friend is picking it up on the way over here to have a gastank welded up.

I know. I definitely would brighten it up if I would mount it on my work benches. But I have a couple vises mounted already and kind of like the hitch mount - giving me a vise access when I am outside. I suppose that is why the previous owner had painted the whole thing over - preventing it from rusting when left it outside...

Actually, the best way to straighten a bent vise handle is to chuck it up in a vise and squeeze it straight. A press will work, too.

I agree with bgott ... if you have access to a press, that is the best way to straighten it easily. 2nd best is the vice method. Just be sure to put alum protectors over the vice jaws so you don't make divots in the handle when you crank it down. 3rd best is to pound it straight on an anvil. DO NOT heat the handle to straighten it though ... or it'll bend easily unless you heat treat it. Bill

But what if you only have the one vise?:headscrat

oh wait, nevermind, forgot where I was for a second.... ;)

The handle on my red Craftsman was like a pretzel when I got it... & had been attacked with a grinder so looks like ****. Thats getting a new one made on the lathe.. & new brass or aluminum jaws. The handle was so bent it wouldn't slide until I beat on it.

I just can't understand why people beat the living **** out of their vices like this. Just doesn't make sense to me. It's just a damn good thing the manufacturers make the handles softer than the screws ... or they'd really render them useless. Now vices from Asia ... I'm not sure how well their screws are made!

No kidding. Because it was so bent & wouldn't slide, the previous owner took a grinder to the handle to make in thinner so it would slide a bit... & the home made jaws were made from 1in square bar...with the mounting holes drilled incorrectly so the jaws mis-align by about 1/4in...

Athol update:
Just got a call stating it is now in my friends car & on the way here :) I guess I know what I'll be doing this week...

Hi Guys,

I finally finished the home made mounting setup for my latest Vice acquisition, a Rigid that I won off of eBay last winter. Thought you guys might like to see it; we seem to have quite a following here.

Mitch, if you want to tell me about it, I am all ears.

I don't know if there a connection here. Desmond Stephan MFG. made vises for a time during their 100 years in business. Could they have sold their vise facility off to Ridgid sometime back. Its got a smilliar hold down like the Parker however the handle and hold down are not interchangable.
By the way, this vise is for sale. Its tight with serrated removable jaws. More photos upon request. $60 without liners, $75 with liners. Its too big for a FRB and it goes 40 lbs. $25 shipping anywhere in the USA.

Gee, I hope they used rebar in your garage floor! Say, some of those old post vises are worth bucks, if it has a name somewhere and condition. A friend of mine had a nice 6" Columbian in nice shape and he turned it on Ebay for $300..I have no use for post vises but a buck is a buck!

Maybe I'll get some foofoo art gallery in Hollywood to hold an exhibition & sell em for $5K each... well, after some tasteful pinstriping of course ;)
The slab under my garage extention is 1ft thick. Previous owner didn't use any fill to get it to the same level as the original garage. I think he said they used 28 yards for 600 sqft including the footers...

well.. er.. 4 are bolted to benches .. & the other 13 just clutter up the place.. There are 5 or 6 of them on the bar.. which is no longer a bar.. another 4 next to the mitre saw.. so I have to move those to use it...

Ya get the idea..
