Thought that might be the case. Fellow in our local P-Club has a couple 928s and believe he has had extensive work completed on them. Will ask him for his recommendation for head service.
Thanks Odis. My heads are 928, so they likely have more in common with your Ferrari than air cooled Porsches. :D
I'll check in with Jack.
OK. My friend responded re the 928 heads. He sent this link. Hope it is useful to you.

An update from Nick on the F355:

I was able to get the heads installed and reinstalled the valvetrain, assembling the engine up to the belts. There was a lot to cover and film during the work this week. These next few videos are going to be very technical.

Next week, I plan to work through the camshaft timing. Like this week, that process is very in-depth and technically heavy, so I have my work cut out for me when it comes to filming. I plan to divide the head/valvetrain install into one video and cover everything related to the timing belts and cam timing in a separate video. There is just too much information to keep them combined.

If things go as planned, I should be through the cam timing and moving on to the general assembly of the engine towards the end of the week.

Heads reinstalled:

Good to have these pictures. Will have some mental fun watching these assemblies going through their motions in my head…[email protected] RPM……

This video from Nick is not so much on the car, but on his passion for this discipline and his choice to get more formal training at Wyoming Technical Institute.

When Nick publishes the next few videos on the car, they will be a bit more technical as he discusses cam timing and other finer techniques.

Thanks for taking a look. Please like, share and subscribe.

Good morning! Attached is the update from Nick on the engine work on the F355:

I am happy to report some good news and that I have made solid progress on the 355 this week.

Starting with the good news. Yesterday, I learned that your bumper is finished and ready for pickup. I plan to pick it up this Monday. I am happy that this was completed quickly, so we won't have to wait for it to finish the service.

As for the 355, I'm still digging into the situation that I have come across on the camshafts. I know I promised to get more info to you last week, but honestly, I'm still digging into this. Here are the Cliff Notes: I discovered a difference between the center cam lobe and the cam shaft's outer cam lobes between both banks. Now Ferrari states that the center lobe is retartded 10 degrees in relation to the outer lobes, which is the case on one side but not the other. As I dug into this, I found discrepancies in the part numbers on the camshafts to the part numbers shown in the Ferrari catalog. They don't match. The part numbers on your cams don't even register in the parts catalog. However, I have confirmed that this finding is not isolated to your car. Every new and used camshaft I looked into matches what I found on your car. I even went through my old pictures of previous 355’s that I have worked on, and confirmed that they were the same. I will keep researching this finding, but if all the available cams are the same, I see no point in waiting for a conclusion on this mystery to finalize the assembly of your engine. All the evidence points to the fact that this is how it came from the factory. I just need to find out WHY. I still plan on getting you a detailed write-up on this, once I can gather all my data and thoughts on it.

I did spend a little time on the engine this week, running some additional checks charting the cam profiles. Once I had the information I needed, I moved into the final assembly of the engine. I fell just short of my goal of having it fully assembled, but I came close. The remaining tasks are to install the plenums, various lines & hoses, harmonic balancer, and ancillary belts.

I am still in a good place for next week. My goal is to finalize the engine. I will then move into installing the engine on Tuesday. I will be pushing hard to have the engine up and running by the end of the week. Then, the following week, I will be finalizing the work and running through the ITB balance. Once All those items are done and everything is well, the process of the final reassembly starts, such as all the undertrays, wheel wells, trunk liners, bonnet, reinstall bumper, etc. As it stands, I am anticipating about 2.5-3 weeks for me to have it fully buttoned up and road tested (pending weather). I will make a shorter road test before I take it up to the dealer for the fuel block recall. I will be communicating my plans for any drives with you a day or two in advance.

~ Nick

From this past Friday:

It lives again! The 355 is back up and running, and it's sounding great. I had a productive week with the car, making solid progress. The engine is fully installed and nearly buttoned up. The car is filled with fresh fluids and running happily. It fired up nicely and settled into a steady idle. I let it run for about 30 minutes to complete a good heat cycle, and I’m happy to report that everything looks great—no fluid leaks or drips, nothing out of alignment or rubbing, AC is blowing nice and cold—everything is as it should be.
I have a busy week ahead. Here’s my to-do list:
  • Double check coolant hose clamps
  • Synchronize ITBs
  • Post service emissions test
  • Bleed/flush the brakes
  • Reinstall ECU covers
  • Reinstall front bumper
  • Reinstall interior trim in the front luggage compartment
  • Reinstall wheel wells
  • Reinstall undertrays
  • Road test
I’m pushing to get all of these items wrapped up and the car road-tested (weather permitting). My target is to take the car to the dealer for the recall this Thursday or Monday of the following week. I expect them to have it for a few days to a week since I specifically requested that a particular technician handle the work. I’ll keep you updated throughout the week regarding my progress and the timing of the road test.
For the initial test drive, I plan to take the same route I used for the pre-service drive (about 8 miles). The dealership is about 24 miles from my place (via the non-freeway route), so the car will gain roughly 50 additional miles during that trip. Again, I’ll be in touch before and after the drives.
I’ll also need to have PPF installed on the bumper once I get the car back from the dealer, and I’m still working on getting that scheduled.

A little fun this past weekend at Cars & Coffee where my eldest friend is clowning around with his coffee over the GT. Should have also mentioned the two boys (brothers) next to the car were great fans of the FGT. Had them sit in the car and take pictures of each other behind the wheel. Smiles all day long!

Finished a couple more Barometer holders. One for my friend that organizes our wood cutting group and one for the shop. The shop barometer is not fancy at all and it has been just laying on a bench for years. It has a more prominent spot now for display and is attached to one of the breaker boxes in the shop via rare earth magnets.. The spalted Birch is simply a “cut off” from the processing for Jack’s gift. Have one more to build and that one will be for me to display in the house.

The F355 has been transferred to Redmond, WA at a local storage facility and waiting for the Ferrari Service Center to complete a long ago recall on the fuel rail system. Ferrari would not allow Nick to do this work since it is a Factory Recall. Nick has a favorite Tech at the service center that will facilitate the work on this recall. Nice! Some very interesting cars in this storage location.

I actually sat down and watched Nick's current video last night. He has an incredible amount of knowledge, not to mention, a great knack of explaining it. I throughly enjoyed it!
Thanks! If you would please, share his video with others. Just trying to build his following, not that I can do all that much for him but each view does help his channel.

Looks like what used to be called Driver's Club. Looks like they've either rebranded or been bought- any insight from an insider?
I’ve been there several times for car related functions. Pretty cool place.

A link for anyone that may have interest:

Couple of months ago, found this 2002 in a garage, actually, the same place where a ton of Porsche parts were up for grabs. This 2002 came with an engine machined ready to receive all new parts, a couple of transmissions and lots of other items for the car. Originally out of SoCal, brought to the PNW years ago and simply stored… No rust at all….a little maybe but nothing notable:

IMG_5885.jpeg

Helped the new owner & friend (bought it for a song) drag it out and load onto the trailer and load with all the stuff from the garage that belonged to this car.

During February’s C & C, a friend told me he had a 2002 sitting in his yard and wanted it to go to someone that can use the parts…….. I knew the right guy who would be more than happy to have this rig.

Arrangements were made to pull it out of the bushes and load. Gave me an excuse to use my JD to do the hard work. We had some fun with this parts car:

Would have loved to add this one, but must say, the hoarder in me was told no….

A friend of mine’s dad owned a 2002 tii back in the early '70s, back when people thought BMW stood for British Motor Works. His dad later moved onward and upward to Porsche 911s. My friend, on the other hand, gravitated toward Japanese pocket rockets, while I’ve stuck with my muscle cars and Corvettes.

Alder. The logs were delivered to me several weeks ago since we were “all full” at our usual location for our firewood project. This past Monday, the guys came here and bucked/split this wood. If you’ve never split Alder before, it is a delightful wood to split.

My neighbor helped me to load/stack a pickup load, then turned to the JD for the rest so that the wood could be stacked to the roof:

This photo popped up today on Facebook. An ad for The Museum in Tacoma, WA where they are supporting a program to get young people into the automotive trades.
Hope my Vette will help their cause!

I've loved those 2002s since I noticed them in my teen years.
Almost a cult following now. Think they are a great little car.

Corvettes and Muscle cars will most likely always be desirable!

Good on you for rescuing the 2002, which was might be described as “partially composted.” Your friend may thank you or begrudge you for aiding and abetting in years to come.

We talked about that very issue………. When we lifted the car with the forks on my bucket, we kinda thought it might split in half. Easy way to get rolling rubber on the rear of the car. The front only needed one tire to roll into the trailer. Lots of usable parts here but no title, so, it’s going to get chopped up for scrap once the usable parts are stripped.

I just hope this project does not stall out like it did with the previous owners. We will see.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Alder wood I believe is common in the smoking community.

If that Vette doesn't get young people hyped, I'm not sure what the answer is!
Love cooking over Alder. Burgers, Beef/Pork, Salmon........ my favorites!

Agree on the Vette attracting potential candidates. Out of the thousands of pictures the Museum has, they used this shot. Nice!

Last week on Friday, encouraged the three in-town owners of the 246 Dino to do a photo shoot. Wanted to do this at my home but one of the cars has not been on the road since 2020 but it was drivable on the owners property….

The pics of these cars are from my iPhone. We did have a professional photographer there and will show a few of his shots which I’m sure will be way better.

We had a good time and lunch thereafter.

IMG_6081.jpegIMG_6095.jpegIMG_6102.jpegIMG_6075.jpeg

Saturday, a couple of friends helped to drive some of the cars for the monthly “Cars & Caffeine” at Griot’s World Headquarters in Tacoma. Left my home at 5a to be at the store by 7:15a. The parking lot fills fast and by 7:40a, it was packed.

Hosting a gathering in May at my home. It is an All-Porsche event to include the two clubs where my membership is of long standing.

Going to have C & C in the morning, then after, lunch at the house where the collection will be on display and then on to a "World Class" collection to end the day. Will park all of the Porsches out on the north lawn overlooking the Strait of Juan deFuca.

We are also celebrating Friends of the Animals and asking our guests to bring cat food/toys/kitty litter/donations.

Fellow that lives just a few blocks from me has been working on a poster for the day. I love it! We will be auctioning the original poster sized artwork during lunch with all proceeds going to this most important organization, Friends of the Animals.
