2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

I last visited Corn Valley in the early 'aughts, after having been away since the '89 (I spent eight years there, school and work). I not only didn't I recognize much, but I felt totally lost. There used to be open land between CV and Philomath!

But Greg at Squirrel's still remembered me and bought a pitcher, so not all bad.

Haven't been back since.

I know what you mean. I had one set of grandparents in Philomath and one in Corvallis. The drive between the 2 towns seemed forever as a kid but as time passed, more and more houses and businesses grew up along the way. I was there last year for my grandmas funeral. My mom’s family still lives in Philomath so I know I’ll be back at some point.

I was hopeful heading into this estate sale. The prices were as high as EBay on most Snap-on items. A huge percentage of it was inscribed. I only ended up buying a few things.

Snap-on lady leg pry bay, Blue-Point ball peon hammer, Vise-Grip pliers, Blue-Point mirror, 2 Blue-Point putty knives $42.

Two sales today, 1st was within 3 blocks but a bust as I overheard " all the heavy tools are in the garage, we haven't got their yet" Family run sale , this from across the room as the guy was trying hard to hype up the benchtop Craftsman tablesaw he had marked $400, as "Dad's tools were pretty much new, this is lightweight easy to get up the basement stairs" I will keep an eye out for the next sale when the garage is open. 2nd sale netted the handful of screwdrivers, Craftsman, Fuller, etc. Craftsman 12" combo Square and for a co-worker/friend who is into antique bikes the Murray Tricycle

Stuff from the weekend: nothing remarkable, I don't think, but I don't regret getting anything. I do think I probably need to settle down and start figuring out what I actually want more of (beyond "ooooh, moving parts and/or lettering under the dirt").


I do kind of like the Sears ignition set, and am contemplating looking up the four missing pieces.

Community sale this weekend. This is a tease as I had to run to a dentist appointment. Snap-On chest welded to a Lyon cart. You experts can help with date range. It’s got some stuff inside that I haven’t had a chance to look at. $20 out the door. I’ll get better pictures later.



Also grabbed a bunch of miscellaneous stuff for an additional $20. It includes a few coffee cans full of US made wrenches and this Duro socket set. I haven’t had a chance to go through it, but I think it’s complete, but the lid hinge needs work.

I don't go to many garage sales. This one was a few doors down and I saw it while chatting with a neighbor.

Took a look and didn't see much. Then I saw this tennis bag with the wo racquets in it.

My son is starting tennis next year, so I figured some extra gear would make sense. Asked how much. She said make an offer. I said $10. She said how about $15 as the bag cost more than that. I said sure.

Got home and discovered the bag had 3 brand new containers of Wilson balls in a pocket.

Then I looked up the two racquets. One is nothing special, about $25 new. The white one was some prince pinnacle limited edition that sold for $100 when new.

When I bent down to check the hp rating, I heard the gentleman running the sale that he had just taken it out of its original box. Unfortunately it is only a 1/4 hp. Never been assembled or used. Any ideas on the year of this? I can not find a date anywhere on it. Thanks

Early to mid 60's is my guess. Should be a date on the bottom.

The lady of the house decided that we needed to go to a few estate sales, so off we went!
The first one was pretty picked over, but I grabbed these for about $4:

The pliers were YSK, a decent pair of Channel Locks and surprisingly a Craftsman extension with a 13 attached.
The next stop was a hoarders paradise, except no tools worth anything. I did find this Lionel train set.

We were there for the last few hours of the sale. I was actually surprised that it was still there. It was featured in the ad for the sale, it was clean, complete and in the original box so I figured that a collector would have picked it up long before I got there. When I was paying for it ($21), I mentioned how surprised I was that it was still there. One of the ladies mentioned that it looked like someone had hidden it, probably was going to come back after it had been discounted.

I have this same set (Lionel - Cannonball) that I got as a kid! I loved it. It came from a True Value Hardware in Kentucky.

The rain scared away some of the community garage sales but maybe tomorrow will be the day with favorable weather. Not much for tools. Paid $1 for this vintage 60's Howell Mfg. fiberglass chair which is a clone of the famous and collectable HM / Eames chairs.

Coincidentally, @Outlawmws I also got a can of Tibet Almond stick. The Peacemaker is a fun to plug cans with and it goes with the Stetson. Yup Farah in all her nipply glory. I must admit a soft spot for old GPSs. I like to run multiples when I'm doing long road trips as provide all sorts of weird data to wile away the time, like what satellites I'm locked on to, altitude, speed, direction. Once you poke around in the menu's it's really odd the sort of data it can report.​

If there is no date on the bottom, there are date codes on the inside of the castings sometimes.

I went to two sales today, both large shop sales out in the country.

The first one, I hit around noon on the second day, and apparently it had been non-stop all the time before that. It was the estate of a farmer diesel mech, and there was a lot of interesting stuff, but the tools had either been picked clean, or removed beforehand. But I managed to find a Victor hacksaw box, some woodie drivers, bearing scrapers, a small wrench, and MT1 and MT2 drill bits. $10.

The second stop was also for the shop of a country mechanic, tractors this time.

A Proto three jaw puller for a slide hammer, Remington 740 magazine, and WWII ammo can. $5

they had 2 production runs, I had one as a kid in the early 60's (Long gone) the later run had a safety added. A site psoting had a claim a third run was made with 700 sets of NOS parts the factory found?

Thanks BMW! same info was posted on the "How many ratchets" thread. Seems like they mostly did crappy bargan bin tools, and the ratchets were usually stamped steel, so this is an upgraded version.

Here’s a bit of an update from this morning’s finds.

The Snap On chest with the added Pontiac badging.


Inside view. It is clearly missing the bottom drawer, but I think that’s been gone for some time as it would interfere with the mounting screw of the Pontiac badge. The top compartment contains a few tools and electronic parts and a socket rack that I haven’t had a chance to examine.


The Lyon cart it is mounted on contains a very large drawer that is full of good old American steel - files, wedges, pry bars, etc. - and a nice array of NOS hammer handles. The plan is to clean this up and use it to store vintage tools.

This is the Duro set that I need to go through and see if it is complete.


The wrenches include Craftsman, S-K, and a slew of other brands. The linesman’s pliers on the far left are Xcelite. Also a saw that needs to be examined further.


There were also a few sockets - Craftsman, Williams, Husky - and an un-named stubby ratchet.


Last is a Guardian oiler that conveniently leaked oil all over the back of my 4Runner - thank God for WeatherTec!


I’ll be heading back tomorrow to see if I can find the bottom drawer for the Snap On chest and any other goodies!

Idk if all Daisy 179s are like this, but on mine I have to pull the hammer very far back. As you are cocking it, the first click is hard and loud, and pulling it back further it has a second click that is soft and quiet. The hammer will lock back on the first click, but nothing will come out if you fire it.
Like I said, I don't know if all are like that, but I figured I'd say something just in case it didn't seem to be working.

Mine has some issues. Safety does not work; the magazine follower spring is MIA; and I believe one hammer spring, is also MIA. There is a tab with a hole in it made for a spring hook. It also only has one **** position.

BMW--my wife and I went to the diesel mechanic sale yesterday--amazing collection of stuff. Didn't buy anything but it was a fun browse. A beautiful 3-ton Dake arbor press, very clean Atlas metal lathe and nice wood lathe with I think a$ 95 price on it--a good buy but not something I need. You've got some nice finds there.

We have been suffering from sale withdrawal since there hasn’t been a decent sale in the Tahoe basin since we arrived at the beginning of the month. Today looked to be more of the same so we headed over Luther Pass and dropped down into Gardnerville, NV where a likely sale was listed on Craigslist. It was a fun sale with a wide variety of old tools. I grabbed the windshield cleaning tool from the free box as we were leaving



A couple of wood handle pipe wrenches.

My wife picked up this mystery tool. I guessed wingnut wrench but I really have no idea.

This Dunlap plastic handle screwdriver I picked up for old times.

This plastic handle screwdriver looks familiar but I was unable to make out the markings.

The next two sales were within a couple of blocks of each other in Minden, NV. The first was a yard sale where all the tools were sitting out on tables in the 94 degree sun, while books were in shady areas under trees. My wife grabbed an inexpensive cookbook and I was unable to leave the much less inexpensive
Snap-on tools behind. Fractional wrenches on the left and metric on the right
After removing some non-matching Mac, Proto and Craftsman sockets, I was left with a full set of Snap-on 12 point 1/4” drive sockets from 3/16” to 9/16”.
The final stop was an estate sale that had rather high prices marked on the tools but ended up being very reasonably priced. Top to bottom - Barcalo, mysterious M.H.T. Co DBE (my third). Western Auto tools, Powr-Kraft groove joint pliers, Walden spinner, Kraeuter and Worth cold chisels.

How wide is the Snap-on box?
As stated in @firstyearchevelle ’s catalog shot, 20-1/4” is a K22 and maybe doesn’t have a decal; 24” is a K23 and probably had a decal under that red spray-over. If the decal was oval, it would be from the late 1930s. If triangular, then the 1940s.
I have a K23 with the oval decal under red spray as found. I’ve since repainted gray, but don’t seem to have an updated pic on my phone (away for weekend).



The backsaw (at least, the medallion) was manufactured by Disston, but branded generic “Warranted Superior” probably from the early 1950s. A closeup of the medallion might clarify - maybe a replacement, but the handle seems to be the same age.
EDIT - here’s my K23 repainted,
and the decal cleaned of red paint.

I was left with a full set of Snap-on 12 point 1/4” drive sockets from 3/16” to 9/16”.

Nice finds overall for that run, but 9/16 in 1/4 drive is a good one. they usually end at 1/2" I'd liek to get to 5/8, but have never seen one.
