The hydraulic steering cylinders on Mr. Case, our old loader/backhoe, were starting to leak, and the ball joints on the cylinders had some obvious play in them, so it was time to overhaul the cylinders and replace the ball joints.

I took them apart for inspection and found the bores, piston rods, and gland bushings to be in excellent condition, so there was no need to hone/replace the cylinders or replace the most expensive parts.

Left-hand cylinder, before cleaning and painting:

Old parts to be replaced:

I stripped and painted the cylinders and a few other bits. Here is one of the cleaned up cylinders, with the original piston rod, piston, gland, and clamps, shown with the new seals and ball joints:

One of the reassembled cylinders, ready for installation:

I installed both cylinders and tested them. Here's the left-hand cylinder installed:

No leaks and no play in the steering. :)
The rest of the tractor needs repainting to match. :devilish:

If I want to really get to my coworkers, I tell them the combo is the last four numbers of their childhood home address.
I do remember my post (zip) code from being a kid, it was 2118 but start takling combos and I'm heading for an institution
And we would have a problem. When I left my parents house there was no zip code, and plus 4 came later
How did that work ? and what is 'plus 4' ?

When I was in elementary school, our post code was a single digit...seriously.
Our address was *** X Street, Salt Lake City, 3, Utah

That was a long time ago...before the invention of fire or the wheel.

And no, the Xs are not Roman numerals. I'm not quite that old.

Fire was all but out this morning so I headed over to my woodshed and stoked it up, we only recently had this fireplace installed and then my wife said we needed a woodshed so I built this. There was a guy down the road pulling down a small wooden framed shed and I bought a heap of the old hardwood off him ( my brother is a builder and he calls this timber second grade steel).

I've heard tell of hardwoods in Oz that will only take a nail when they're green. Once dry, nails won't penetrate and the nails you put in when green are now permanent. I was told this by a buddy from north of Cairns, but don't know if he was pulling my leg (having me on) or not.

He was serious, can burn drill bits just trying to drill for a nail

In October 2020 I wrote local legislation (very local as in my property only) that banned me from getting rid of anything ever again because every time I get rid of something I need it in less than a week. “I have one of those !! Oh wait, younger Mike had one of those until the dummy got rid of it !!” So. I used some of my treasures today to better our lives.

Some would say this is a worn out harrow tooth ……

I say it’s a drying rack !!

I can’t believe how well this works for the 9.5 minutes invested in it.

I think repurposing is better than making from scratch in some cases, well done

I made another set of copper jaw covers for my "new" Parker vise.

54582726832_c4d5a86557_o.jpg

I made two half-patterns from file folder paper--I scored a bunch of file folders when the office "went digital". The half patterns are the best way I know to keep things symmetrical. Cut two pieces of 2" type L copper pipe from the scrap copper bucket to the width of the "ears" of the patterns. Slotted them with a cut-off disk in an angle grinder--cuts fast, throws chunks of copper and makes a mess.

Now to anneal the pipe pieces. I'll use my "Coleman Rosebud":

54583777239_9ee1146dda_o.jpg

Yeah, that little stove cooks. I need to clean and re-wax her.

Once the copper is red-hot,

54583908485_1a7a52f97a_o.jpg

make plates from the pipes.

Rough out with the bandsaw:

54582726842_379ac3fa8b_o.jpg

54583811398_5d046c4b6a_o.jpg

Finish the shaping and smoothing on an angle grinder w/flap disk in the vise.

Fitted:

54583597271_1918e12ed9_o.jpg

Finished:

54583811363_ebd3cb72a6_o.jpg

I made this set long as they protect the vise from welding spatter--and I will be doing some welding in it.

I’ve come across some stuff like that in attics. I would keep a little cup of water to cool the bit when pre-drilling for screws.

I have few of them:

The two on the left are Coleman 500s, the right are 500As. The 500As are custom paint jobs.
