In my bedroom floor--I rebuilt my vacuum cleaner again. Sucked up a shoelace and it proceeded to get shredded by the steel bottom plate in my vintage Eureka. Looks like I'll have to add a new beater bar to the budget. The original (on it when I got it) has loud bearings--so they're probably bad.

I went to my shop to start cleaning things up in preparation for some new toolboxes.

Next month, I decided to put off the 3D printer yet another month, and get a new toolbox. My old Craftsman bottom in the garage is beat to holy heck, and they had been so overloaded with junk (all stuff my Dad stored in there, despite it being my Granddad's box) that it ripped the slides out of the frame. Thus, US General Series 3 27" bottom plus organization was felt to be a better utilization of the "big purchase" segment of the July budget. Also, I'm buying (possibly instead of the US General) the Blackhawk boxes (and contents) of the tools belonging to my great-Grandpa, as well as the Snap-On boxes (and contents) of my great-uncle. I'm sure I can get them for around $500 (all I can afford--plus my Granddad's sisters tend to sell stuff to resellers for pennies on the dollar anyway)--and thus have a pretty darn solid American-made box (and a decent helping of American-made tools).

Also, I'm ditching some crude shelving for a wall of organizer bins. That way, I won't have to dig aimlessly for hardware.

My Dodge needs a few things (and me getting a new front plate sticker and registration--lost them back in the winter) before I get this year's inspection sticker and put it back on the road. It probably won't fit in a Crosstrek or Escape, and will likely have to be loaded by forklift. Probably unloaded by tractor. Either I'll use my buddy's truck or have a relative with a towing company haul it on a rollback.

Checked to make sure the AC was running.

Stuff I want to do but I had a chiropractor appt this morning so didn't want to get started and this afternoon, after trying to drive the impact driver through my thumb the other day, I figured take a few days off and not get it dirty. . . on vacation and the heatwave going on here, just hanging with the dog in the house.

Sounds like a good deal ! No way to repair the old Craftsman box ? I get emotionally attached to tools / boxes etc I've had for a long time.
Young bloke at work just got his new Snap On toolbox yesterday, rolled it off the truck after paying $9,000.00
Made me think my Snap On boxes were a good purchase many years ago and I also realised they are probably antiques now........time slips away

I'm thinking about retrofitting those two bottom drawers to use some decent cabinet drawer slides from a hardware store, and will use it as a roll-cab with a butcher-block work top. Probably would be smoother than the friction slides anyway. It was a lower-end offering from the mid '90s. I think Granddad got it when he built the new garage.

It's the newest out of the boxes my Granddad had. He received his first (a "Crowntop" 18-inch hand carry box) as an anniversary gift in the late '60s. That was then upgraded to a 24" "Home Storage System" top and bottom in the late '70s (and served as his work boxes at a mining equipment repair shop for most of the '90s). He also had the black/red ones in the basement. I tend to do most of my work in the shop as opposed to the garage--as A: it's got 220 for welders and B: it's built out of stone in a hillside, thus it stays cool in the winter. Because of the condition of the shop box, most of my tools though are currently in the garage.

You n me both. I occasionally have lovely dreams of Western n National Auto stores. The other night I walked through Steinhardt's, all the way back through the motor shop, and watched old Jim turn the commutator on a generator.
How many these days would even know what a commutator is?
Or, even an armature?
Or, even brushes?
Or, even that cars/motorcycles had generators?

God forbid you ask for field coils.

Just imagine, I recently flashed a generator in a 48 Ford. Raise your hands if you think it didn't have to do with clothing,

I was telling an apprentice the other day that when we did after hours road service that we would often replace the regulator / brush set on alternators that had external regulators on the side of the road, he looked at me like I had 2 heads

Welded and cleaned the slag from the bracket to hold the new switch box for my table saw modification. Found my only #21 drill bit is dull, ordered a package of bits and some 10-32 X 1/2" machine screws from Amazon.

I can't remember when I last burnt any rods, but this job looks like I have not lost my ability to lay a bead.

I was trying to explain to a 30-something the other day how my control system for the brewery hot water works.

When I started explaining relay logic his eyes just glassed over... it's gotta use an Arduino or it just don't make sense.

I've rebuilt external regulators roadside. Usually it was either the fusible link or fused points. Easy fixes--I used to carry a small roll of the fusible link wire in the road box. Fused point could be pried apart and filed. Good enough to get to the next town--or the next payday.

My highschool aged daughter wants to watch the news. So I hooked the HDHomeRun back up to the network with an antenna and set it up back up for streaming. I'll re-subscribe to YoutubeTV when football season starts again. Until then, this will suffice.
What, horror films not enough for her?

I got a wild hare up my *** today and decided that I needed to get the cottonwood duff, leaves and **** out of the shop. There were drifts under things where a broom doesn't reach, so I used the cordless leaf blower--which pretty much worked, but I'll wear a dust mask next time.

About five minutes ago, a thunderstorm front moved in with 30+ knot gusts and blew the shop completely full of cottonwood and dust. It's worse than before I blew it out.

It's 79 outside and 81 in the shop, so closing the doors ain't an option.

Fired up the 3d printer finished printing deer feeder leg parts. Reassembled the vw door handles, I had drilled the rivet out and following a suggestion by the restoration guy, took roll pins snaded them so the were a slip fit except for one end which was a press fit. Worried about having one fall out or breaking the pot metal part with too much press fit. Measured up the generator wagon for new never flat tires.

Last night I rebuilt 2 pop-up canopies. Ran out of canopy parts....who says hoarding doesn't have its benefits. Now I need to be on the lookout for broken canopies at the remaining softball tournaments and on trash day.

Who knew, after crappy work days, that some small accomplishments are really rewarding!

Always wanted one of those. I’ve moved so many times that it would have been worth it for me to pay full price for a new one, but I’m a cheap ***. :badteeth:
While everyone else was in their garages doing fun stuff, I was up in my attic crawling around trying to figure out how to make some duct connections.

Sucked to be me yesterday!
That’s a winter job if I ever heard of one.

Agreed, I wish I could plan winter days when something comes up and has to be dealt with! Sucked big time.

When I put a floor in an attic of a previous home, I had an access from inside the house, so I cranked the ac and aimed my big fan up. Helped a ton.
I can see doing that, I would definitely try that but many reasons why I can't at this home. I go early in the morning and try to finish the rough stuff before it heats up, the first day just sucked, did I mention yet it sucked? Oh yes, I meant to say, it sucked!
