Odd thing this morning... went to hit the Morgan with a bit more paint...everything peachy on the static jaw part... but it reacted on the dynamic.. WTF?? Prep for both parts was identical, paint on both parts was the same...They were fine last night, sat on the bench next to each other & this morning I get this going on.. very strange :(

I'll leave it to kick off & then do that one part from scratch again I guess..

I've seen that happen before when not waiting long enough between coats.

Why? I'll give you a few reasons why. 1, its a Athol, 2, it will restore beautufully and you do beautuful restorations, 3, its a piece of Americana, 4, its a functional piece of art, 5, how many of us can say we have that exact model, probably none of us, and 6, when the old lady throws you out, that one will fit that one into your bag!

Does anyone know much about these types of vises? This isn't a picture of the actual vise I saw, but it's pretty similar. I stumbled onto it at a garage sale this morning and it was attached to a crappy bench. The guy wants $25 for the bench and vise. I'd just throw the bench away, but I'm interested in the vise. The jaws are about 6", and it's in better shape than this one in the pic. I'm about to build a portable fab/weld table and it might be pretty decent for it, because the outer jaw doesn't move away from the table. I don't know, it just kinda' got me thinking.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had one and I was told is was a Chezk or made in Poland, Its presision made with side gib adjustments. Its like the "Lazy Boy" of vises. On opening, the front jaw stays stationary and the back one moves. Its heavy also,

Made in Germany, sometimes Poland. seen em on Craigslist/Ebay from $40 to $120.
For $25 grab it!
Thanks. I'll be picking it up tomorrow morning!

The same guy had a 6' tall x 24" wide Stanley metal drawer cabinet, similar to a Lista style unit. It wasn't perfect, but it was well worth the $50 he was asking for.

The vises are pretty nice. They are made in Poland. Often they are marked "High Test" as that was a US importer. I believe they are metric as the one I had seen was marked 100mm jaw width, not 4". The mfg. date is often stamped on the top of the moving jaw. I really like the adjustable dovetails. They must me designed only for light to moderate forces judging from the smaller than usual diameter of the handle. Turn it over and check out the bottom. The swivel base lockup is pretty solid compared to most vises I have seen.

Here is an ATHOL I found. It cost me $34.00. It has not been hit with a hammer and has no breaks, cracks or damage. I just bolted it to the bench yesterday. I am not painting it. I like it the way it is. If you want to lube these, Do you just unscrew it all the way out?

Nice vise! I'd just unscrew it all of the way, clean the screw, and re-lube.

Looks to be in great condition; nice score. To take full advantage of the design of the base, you should cut a channel out of your workbench for the slanted part to fit into. To lube it, you're right -- all you have to do is screw it all the way out.

I like your use of vintage hardware (nuts). That vise looks to be in nice shape for the age.

Thanks for the info. Were they made for anything specific? Seems like a complicated design for just a regular vise.

You guys got me hooked now. I'm on the lookout for one of those big Athols.

Here's a pic of the one I just picked up at the garage sale. I scored it for a measley $20! I unbolted it from the old bench they had it on, and I couldn't run out of there fast enough. I felt like I was robbing a bank! The jaws measure about 5 inches.

Here's an old USA made Craftsman that I sandblasted and repainted about 15 years ago. It's been sitting under my bench unused since then. Soon, I'll blast it again and repaint it. The jaws measure about 3.5 inches.

I've had this Craftsman for probably 5-10 years. Almost never use it, but it's kinda cool.

And here's my Larin 6" from Farm & Fleet that I use pretty regular. It's a cheapo, but takes a pretty good beating. It's probably 12-14 years old.

I saw this one today, a Prentiss 99 vise. I see it referred to in an previous ebay auction as a Coach Maker Vise. Marketing hype or reality - I am not sure. The jaws remind me of a sheet metal vise. I wonder if the jaws are original or added - they look like they were screwed on but I did not spend much time looking at it. From what I can tell it weights about 50 lbs. Anyone ever seen one of these before? Thanks

Maybe I'm wrong but in the time they were making and repairing coaches, the bench mouned vise was hardly a thought. Working sheet metal is more like it. I made the mistake of buying a very old Columbian-Howe that I'm almost ready to throw in the Classifieds. For me, its useless!

It probably has a lot to do with your location...

It's going to be expensive to ship, so if you have an active market on craigslist for tools in your area, you can probably get a nice price for it.

Any pictures?

There was a 436 on Ebay about maybe a year ago. It went for $800 in excellent condition. The seller, "Matchlessantiques" sells alot of Blacksmithing items and they get top buck. They set a $800 reserve on a Reed 108 and some bidder made that reserve on the final day. I've got a 435 listed now and it may not even get an opening bid. Thats Ebay for you.

I remember that one. IMO thats crazy but eBay is eBay. I paid $150 for my Reed 108 in very good shape. I'd love to see pics of this big ol parker.
