I was washing the car in shorts and a hoodie yesterday at 8 am by 1400 when I started mowing temps had dropped 10 degrees and the wind was blowing 25 mph. I had to come in for a second jacket and gloves. I always look forward to snow but I dont ever recall seeing it this early in the season.

Funny, we were sitting out back watching football and when that wind kicked up and lost constant sun, it got chilly quick!!!

I just saw it was snowing in ATL earlier and that above 5k ft in the smokies they are supposed to get some solid snow, wild!

Wife and I were kid free this morning since we went to a friends wedding last night so I got up early and decided to give the car a good wash. I drug out the pressure washer and my bucket of goodies and got after it. 20251109_080517.jpg20251109_080524.jpggiving thebwheels a good scrub while the car soaked from the foam gun. I really look forward to getting a mounted setup where car washing can be more convenient. After washing and drying the car I finally found what I had forgotten about. While unloading my car Wednesday at the conference, I heard a big thynk noise from a walnut but didnt see where it hit. Well, right in the center of the roof. 20251109_090625.jpg
I went to church and after I got home decided to tackle the repair with my PDR kit.

I got the car inside and setup 20251109_125822.jpg
The reflection board really shows well the dent. 20251109_125924.jpg
I started with this puller which wasnt quite enough to pull it out. I switched to the slide hammer which moved it some after I hit the dent with the heat gun. 20251109_131305.jpg20251109_135104.jpggetting closer 20251109_142221.jpg
Here you can see the lines are now pushing towards each other. This indicates a high spot. I used a rounded tapping point to knock down the high spots and this was my final. About 95% better than it was. Theres still a tiny low spot , but I didnt have a puller tip that really was getting in there and pulling it up. I spent about an hour on this tiny dent and had to let that be good enough. I will say that it was good practice and I look forward to trying to correct other dents and dings as they happen. I got this kit and a second kit that was loosely thrown in a box for 5 dollars at an Amazon reseller store my dads buddy rums. I also got a lifetime supply of puller glue so I should be good to go for the next dent I find. 20251109_142240.jpg
I managed to get the yard mowed and most of the leaves roughly mulched and then left for a conversation with a client I was dreading.

A couple of months ago we replaced a rear diff in a toyota for one of my dads friends. This guy is as cheap as they come, and always wants to bring his own parts or find it cheaper online etc. It gets old dealingwith subpar stuff. Anyways, the China diff went bad, I bought it because he didnt wanna pay for a Toyota diff. He got mad when I asked him to cover another diff and I would eat the labor. Warranty this and that blah blah. I was going to fix it for him initially, but then I did something my old boss used to do. I pulled out my wallet and refunded him for the whole job. Apologized to him for the inconvenience, and told him I wasnt going to be able to work it for him anymore. I walked out of there feeling great for firing him and even though it cost me a couple grand it was worth it. Moving forward, I will be focusing on people who value my time and experience, not those looking for a deal.
I have done the same thing a couple of times. I have never regretted it. It's not something you want to do very often but there are occasions when the customer's demands are beyond reasonable.

Lou I think he was slowly realizing it as we talked. He kept asking who could do it, and kept mentioning how expensive it would be. Its funny to me, had he not been rude the other day I was going to eat the labor and do it again for him.

I had my neighbor drop his car off last night to replace a leaking heater hose, went ahead and did both of them while we were in there. The Airlift made quick work of filling the cooling system.20251110_194329.jpg
Filled and test driven and dropped back off to an appreciative neighbor.

Thanks for sharing the beautiful scenery of tenesse!
Anytime! Here a few from the neighborhood up the road from me.Snapped these while on a death march with the dog.. This has to be a tough scene to wake up to every morning.20251114_075542.jpgi love seeing the fog out there.20251114_073905.jpglittle family of deer , we kept seeing lots of singles but this was a group of 5 or 620251114_074434.jpg
There are miles and miles of these paved greenways all over our community. They link neighborhoods together and are great for walking or riding a bike. This one in particular is not often used as you have to climb a huge ridge to get to it. I-40 is the road down below so theres a lot of interstate noise but also a great place to see some big deer and other wildlife. With no one out there my pup can go off leash too and work on his training.

Gotta love the creativity of a kid. My son is growing weeds in a cup. He found this UV light and said it will help it grow inside. 20251120_071145.jpg20251120_071141.jpg

Not much going on out in the shop, just knocking down some small jobs as they come thru, and I ordered a new tool which will be here today.

New tool day! After getting back home from work today this was waiting on me.20251121_164408.jpgmy son wanted to hang out so I put him to work assembling the trans jack. 20251121_165935.jpg20251121_171022.jpg20251121_171725.jpgits an OEM tools 1 ton dual stage jack. It had a dual pivot head which was one of my requirements, as well as the weight capacity. I also found that a lot of these jacks stopped at 67 inches which didnt seem high enough to me. This one goes up to 76 inches which is plenty of height. I have 4 transmission jobs upcoming so I had to commit and buy a jack. The worst part of having a tool like this is storing it. I will try and clear out some space behind the boat once we get these transmission jobs done.

Not much going on here this weekend. I pulled the boat out to drain the bilge, and then backed it into the shop for its long winter nap. Snapped this pic of the mirror to show what a tight fit it can be. 20251122_153228.jpgback inside and covered up for the winter. 20251122_154446.jpg I went by my buddies house today to pick up my hard top for my Jeep today. I have been needing to get the Jeep top from his place for awhile and finally made time to grab it today. To fit it in the Acty I had to drop one side of the bed, tir up the tailgate, and unbolt and remove my rear ladder bar in the bed. He has some of the weirdest stuff over there like this Steiner mower with a front mount bucket. 20251122_134347.jpgI got the top back home and started cleaning out the Jeep tub. Hoping to get it cleaned out and a few bolts drilled out so I can finish roughing up the tub and getting it ready to spray. Last but not least was I finally got to wash my poor car after busting out a ton of miles this week. At one point I had to drive to Kentucky and actually ran into people I had worked with previously at my old hospital. 20251122_100605.jpg
Its been rain and near zero visibility fog the past few days which makes driving sketchy, and nasty. Felt good to get cleaned up, and ready for next week.

Finally back home after a busy 3 days at my EMS conference. On the way out of Gatlinburg, I opted to sneak over through Wears valley and hit the Foothills parkway back home. This is the new section of the parkway thats been open a few years now. I have only driven it once but today was great. Not a ton of leaf lookers and the views are breathtaking up there. 20251107_133139.jpgexcuse the car being nasty. Its rained for a week plus and I didnt get to wash it. 20251107_133106.jpg20251107_133053.jpg20251107_133048.jpg20251107_133024.jpg20251107_132525.jpg20251107_132751.jpg20251107_132746.jpg

Colors were amazing, and the road is awesome. Nice sweeping corners, a few tight radius corners, asphalt is in great shape and the stone bridges look amazing. I refrained from doing the other side of the parkway which takes you over to US 129 the dragon. I really like driving that part as its fast and has a good flow to it. By the time I finally got back to the house, I was beat from the week and not sleeping in the hotel. Brought a bunch of swag for the kids which made them happy.
Busy weekend ahead, wedding to attend for some lake friends. We are also suppoosed to have a big drop in temp to the low 30s so I gotta get the boat winterized tomorrow and tucked away.
Discovered this section of road on this year's trip to the dragon. Just an absolutely incredible section. We managed to get one decent run on it without much interruption on Thursday but the other two times we drove it were a slow parade of leaf watchers.

Its a great run. The other side that crosses over to the Dragon is a lot of fun as well. I have to go back up there in February and will hit it all and possobly head over the mountains and try and slide in a day of skiing too.

Another new tool showed up yesterday! 20251123_150415.jpg
Its a replacement for my Stihl blower that was stolen last year. Went big and got a BR 800 backpack blower. Went to town on the yard and leaves, now just need my buddy to come by and **** em all up.

I have been doing that part of the run for I think 3 years now. That path to the dragon is really good. I learned about that road on a trip with the NSX group several years back. I take it from our rental house every year at least once to stop at The Artistic Bean coffee shop. If you really like great coffee, it is almost a must stop in my opinion. They use manual press espresso machines and I have had some of the best espresso ever there.

Love the Stihl Backpack blowers. My dad brings his down for me to use once and a while. I really need to get around to getting one while we still can get them. I want to biggest one though, cause why not haha.

Foothills Pkwy is a great route for sure, thanks for the heads up on that coffee shop @cccoltsicehockey I might have to try and get up that way next time we are at the dragon, good coffee run is always fun while out driving.

Nice pick up on that backpack blower, @Xti04 one of those has been on my short list for a while, just havent pulled the trigger yet...

@Xti04, like your son, I grew up wanting desperately to work on stuff in the garage. My father was a teacher and pushed me to work on books. It's good you documented your son wanting to hang out but be careful the photo doesn't become some Karen's fuel for a 'forced child labor' incident.
back inside and covered up for the winter.

Your boat brand name sent me to the Goog to verify why it is familiar to me.

When we lived in Australia, Liane accompanied me on a couple of business trips. In March 1990 we flew from Sydney to Melbourne and stayed at the $155 a night ParkRoyal St. Kilda hotel (when IBM paid) and the $85 Magnolia Court boutique hotel (when we paid). Liane had a great time using her non-rush hour bus pass to travel all over the city and meeting up when I finished at the office.

Because I documented our life while living down under, the March 1990 issue of "The Manly Misfits' Monthly" included a brief section describing the Moomba Festival.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving! I ate way too much andafter a rough day and a power nap I made it back home and spent the rest of the day relaxing.
I had to run up to Kentucky yesterday to check on a couple hospitals up there and on the way back swung by Harbor Freight and picked up another led light for the shop. Just the little flex head magnetic led light but they were on sale so I grabbed another one.

I got home and changed the oil in my car, got it road ready for next week. The kids wanted to have a camp out so I finally got to break in the truck camper build from the Summer. To get working heat in there I had to do some last minute fab work. 20251128_170930.jpgthis is a mock up test piece so I can fine tune the fit before I buy some lexan to build the actual piece. 20251128_172316.jpg
The rough fit wasnt great but we were losing daylight and I was trying to get this all set up. Next up was how to place the heater. I made an extension harness for the heater power wires which you can see above. I didnt want to sit it on the ground so I came up with this setup. 20251129_082307.jpga piece of plywood rests on the tire and under the bed to secure it, and then the heater is screwed to some 2x4 scraps to elevate the exhaust off the wood. I bought a longer exhaust hose to get the warm air into the truck and got it all fired up after dark. It was pretty comfortable temp wise , especially considering it was 29 degrees outside last night. 20251129_082340.jpgthe cooler makes a perfect step to get in with the tailgate down, the trifold queen mattress worked out great and was comfortable. Kids loved it, only thing missing is the interior lighting needs finished. I had the low power red lighting for nighttime working but the main interior leds are not wired to a plug yet. 20251129_082259.jpgKids were comfortable and enjoyed it. I think with a few more tweaks it will be a great setup and I can test it with the wife to get her seal of approval.

This morning when I came in my wife unveiled her own creation, " the jolly trolley" which is her mobile present wrapping station. 20251129_085755.jpg20251129_085801.jpgall her ribbons, bows, bags, wrapping paper, tape scissors etc all in one mobile Ikea base. I have to give props for being creative with it, and pretty well executed.

We dug into a discovery sport today to drop a transmission. Another Turo car of my buddies. Apparently some rented it and didnt return it for 5 months. Only reason he got it back was because it ran out of oil, jumped time and quit running. He has another disco sport with a bad trans so we are gonna swap one trans into the other. 20251130_153825.jpg
We got the engine cross bar on and hung and used the trans jack and pole jack to drop the subframe. Once we got the subframe out and on the ground20251130_161043.jpg
We went ahead and pulled the front diff and then dropped the trans out. Hardest part of that was getting the torque convertor bolts broken loose. 20251130_171535.jpgwith the trans out we popped the subframe back into the car jacked the engine up and slid a 2x4 under the oil pan to hold it up. Wheels on, and backed it out to be picked up and taken to the scrap yard.

On another note the Vevor diesel heater really surprised me. Between providing awesome heat in the truck, and the fact it only used a half gallon of diesel to keep my truck nice and warm all night I have no complaints. Best 85 dollars I have spent in a minute.

Sounds like the heater setup worked really well. With it being diesel, is there any or much smell from it? I ask because I might consider one of those instead of the small propane heaters we currently use in our tailgate tent at cold games.

Also, you are brave for not cutting those rack bolts inside the cab. I already hit my head on them twice by just looking at them.

@cccoltsicehockey The longer bolts are part of an interior system I have not installed yet. Yes my head has already found them🤬. The plan was to build an interior cross bar to hang my fan from for warmer weather camping. This tipper was a cheap grab off MP and after adding roof bars Im not quite sure its what I want. It may get sold and swapped for a taller topper. The diesel heater has a small muffler that pushes the exhaust out, I ran in in the shop for a solid 6 hours or so and even in an enclosed space I did not smell the burned diesel. Im not sure how well it would do at a tailgate as the heat is mostly focused to just the vent where as most propane heaters I have seen or used tend to project heat out a bit further. They do have a few models that would work better for that situation but I didnt realize that until I had already pulled the trigger on this one.

Ahhh, makes sense if you have something else planned for the extra thread. I imagine those interactions though so far have been a bit painful. I taller topper would definitely be nice to give some more headroom. It would be more costly, but what about fabricating an inner frame inside the existing topper to support the weight of a roof top tent? Just use the other space for gear storage then.

I have given some consideration to a RTT, but cost is a huge factor with those. My roof bars have a 150 lb weight limit, and were mostly so I could haul a couple of canoes or kayaks up there, so there would have to some extra work to beef up the whole setup. My cousin has a RTT for his Tundra I really like, I need to get the wife to do some time in the truck and see how she does with these mods I have made so far. If she loves it I could possibly talk her into upgrading my setup some more! Still looking for better seating options for the old truck as the bench is awful.

What should have beenca simple operstion on a wrangler turned into a redo night mare this evening. Truck had 2 dead cylinders, withvopen corcuit injector faults. Noid light proved out wiring as good and signal gettingnto injectors so we popped the upper manifold off and got after it. One injector on each side bad. Replaced both bad injectors, all buttoned up and it had a miss. I could see the slight shake of the engine but scanner verified a misfire on cylinder 5. Swapped coils no go. Checked plugs which I had replaced last year they were good. Did a quick cylinder leakdown since I have seen these 3.6s burn valves. All good. Swapped the injector to cylinder 1 and the misfire followed. Well damn, I cant get an injector until tomorrow. And I have to pull the rail up for a third time to replace it. I have other cars my time is obligated to tomorrow, and this leaves an extra vehicle in the way since it cant be picked up now. Cant sweat it, just fix it and move on.

The wife's approval is paramount in my opinion. I very briefly considered building an off-road trailer to pull behind the Jeep and do some overlanding trips. The trailer would provide sleeping and cooking provisions and allow us to take some extended trips on dirt when we travel. We have a few places that we would like to go yet that are difficult to cover in one day and when I talked it through with the wife I almost shut it down as the words left my mouth. I liked camping when I was younger, now we don't camp, we RV and there is a big difference. I like having my 4-star amenities when we travel in the coach and then hop in the Jeep for day excursions, that seems to work good enough for me and the wife. :bounce: Although the wife is a trooper and said she would give it a try if I really wanted to, but again, I shot it down almost as soon as the words came out of my mouth. :ROFLMAO:

@zmotorsports I thought about this a good bit last night and this morning, and a RTT could be a two fold purchase. While my truck is a 2wd and certainly not an overlanding vehicle, there are a lot of gravel roads and trails out here that it would be just fine exploring. Kids could have the in bed camper and wife and I sleep up top or vice versa. Some quick sketches mentally had me thinking of a frame like @cccoltsicehockey suggested. My Wrangler project once completed, would be fun to have a RTT on because I cohld tackle some more complex trails and still have a place to sleep. Of course it would make my jeep top heavy and on a short wheelbase vehicle thats always a concern. We will see how spring time camping plans go and work it from there. But yall have me looking for RTTs now instead of planning my CEO meeting in 30 minutes! 🤣

Agreed. Roof Top Tents really throw the balance of an off-road vehicle off, especially a narrow, shorter and somewhat lighter weight of a TJ. I would probably advise against if planning on running anything more than fire roads. I've actually recommended to a few people to run an obstacle, then just remove the spare tire and run the same obstacle again. The difference is staggering just having a 100 pound tire/wheel combo hanging 3' above axle centerline, a roof exacerbates the difference even more. That is the only reason I was briefly considering a trailer as a RTT was never in the equation for me personally.

I gotta ask and know you may not have the answer....but did the renter pay that whole time? I've got a neighbor who did Turo for awhile on some 5 year old Jags/BMW/Benz and eventually admitted it wasn't worth the headache as the damage and hassles wasn't worth it.

More or less it was stolen. Rented and then never returned. I have a couple of friends who do Turo and its a nighmare. This guy probably spends 3-5k a month with me doing repairs on his fleet. This guy had one of hos Maseratis rented out, the renters boyfriend took it on a high speed police chase across Knoxville. Cops showed up to my buddies house and he used the GPS tracker he put on it to pinpoint the car for them. Its such a hassle, every car is mistreated, beat on, gets keyed and all of the renters smoke weed in these cars. Its disgusting how poorly they are treated and then brought to me to fix.
Another friend had an Alfa Romeo Stelvio rented, it was then traded for drugs by the renters mother. Drug dealer was running all over town in it, finally found wrecked with keys in it in an abandoned house backyard. Turo has regualtions where it cant be reported stolen and its just too easy to rent with a fake id.

Another thing we have found is people renting these cars to do cross country drug runs. Pick up a car run to Michigan or Miami and back in 36 hours. They pay the mileage overage, car is usually trashed and full of seeds and stems. I was looking into doing Turo initially, but after seeing how this whole process goes, there is no way I would ever do it.

Damn....that level of damage and he keeps doing it means it's either incredibly profitable, he's a glutton for punishment or a horrible book keeper ....probably some combination of the above

Maybe you should jokingly put a sticker on the ****** jack of "Brought to you by Turo"

Its been a great relationship for me. And he saves a ton having me do the work. I dont understand it, but I think its a way to write off money his other businesses make.

Spent some time outside reorganizing the shop to make room for the transmission jack and cleaning up sawdust and loose tools. 20251207_145347.jpgmy miter saw had been setup over here as a work station while I was building the truck boxes. Felt good to clean it up and put it away. 20251207_154749.jpgI also moved the planer/ sander flip top cart and welders down there behind the boat. My bench is a wreck again as well as the table saw. Damn flat spot disease. I did get the parts washer cleaned off so its good to go, and I am planning to finallymount the board behind the press for hanging tooling. I will need to grab a sheet of foam board to slide in there first before covering it up.

My son hung out and helped me out there with the cleaning and putting away some of the Christmas totes back into the loft. Thats gonna be another place I need to tackle soon. So much stuff up there, I need to either clean it up, throw it away, or sell it. After shop cleanup it was time to make some dinners for the week. I made beef stroganoff for tonight,20251207_183231.jpg I also made some panko crusted chicken tenders for the kids20251207_191958.jpgand made some homemade tomato soup for the wife.20251207_200504.jpg
I took her soup and put it into my muffin tray to make individual servings so she can grab it from the freezer and go.20251207_203230.jpg She loves tomato soup with a grilled cheese and its an easy way to get her to actually eat a lunch. I have a busy week coming up as we try to get the rover transmission job completed this week, and try to get these benches cleared off and some organization for hand tools created.

Went to pick up the receiving rover for the trans job. I found it with a dead battery and a flat tire. I took the key apart to get the manual key out from insode only to find it missing. A quick trip to the hardware store got me a 6ft 1/4 in steel rod to make a tool with. A quick bendnin the vise and a few adjusting bends made at the car got my door open in about 15 minutes. 20251208_181334.jpg20251208_181234.jpgwithtl the hood popped I attempted to bring the battery back to life. No luck getting it to jump off, so I will bring a battery tomorrow to get it started. I got the tire aired up and ready to go. It was cold and I was being watched by a ton of folks in the gym parking lot where this car has been sitting for the past few months. I will come get it tomorrow and get it torn down so we can get this swap completed and out the door.

Jeff and I got the trans job knocked out on the rover and all buttoned up last night. 20251209_201624.jpgThings had gone really well, it went together with minimal fuss. I hopped in an started it up only to find it would not go into gear. Was flashing gearbox fault on the dash. I had left my scanner on so it had a dead battery and it was after 9 pm so we called it a night. Jeff swung by this afternoon and after scanning it decided to swap the tcm which is mounted on the trans with the original. That solved our issues and after 2 test drives it was returned to my buddy.

Heres a few shots of East Tennessee over the last week. I have been driving close to 800 miles a week the past few weeks and its been tough. I love the scenery but driving wears you out. Stopped at Pals for a chili burger and frenchie fries20251209_125828.jpg
I have been driving past this truck for the past couple of months and stopped to snap a pic of it today. 20251211_102641.jpg
front fender says F150, it looks like the back half is from a bronco with a crew cab truck. Either way its had my curiosity piqued for awhile so I had to stop and snap a pic.

Lastly how do you tell if a tree is male or female? This was a question my boss asked me the first time we drove up to a small hospital near the Kentucky border. I wasnt sure what the answer, but then I remembered anatomy class and it seemed pretty obvious. 20251211_114503.jpg🤣 this is what happens when you spend all day in a car by yourself.

Bronco Centurion is what it looks like to me.
You can tell the front fender was swapped over from another truck (apparently an F150) by the mismatched paint and lack of stripes or trim.

That is exactly what it looks like, Centurion from the 90's. Had a coworker that had one in the F250 flavor and 460cid. It was kind of a neat build and I think the Excursion was derived from this early design.

Listen to me talk about Fords like I know what I'm talking about.... :ROFLMAO:

@XJSuperman, @zmotorsports I had never seen or heard of a centurion so I had to go do some quick reading on it. I would love to swap my powerstroke drivetrain into that thing! Its a cool looking truck and the OBS Ford trucks are a soft spot for me as I have owned a few. With my kids growing, I kinda wonder how much longer my extended cab is a viable option before they outgrow it. Something like this is cool and definitely different, but the last thing I need is a basketcase project.
