My official job title is Plant Manager, so I'd best get onto managing the plants!

I started today with the Scotch thistle and Hound's Tongue infestation in the "Back Forty" of the pub grounds.

Those are second-year rosettes of Scotch thistle. Nasty stuff. It can grow up to twelve feet tall and form dense thickets. The previous LO of the property let it get completely out of control--he'd spray after it had set seed--useless.

I managed those cute little plants with Trimek herbicide.

I've been keeping on it for the last six years and had it pretty well in hand. Last year, the property was put on the market and I was told not to bother, so it got ahead of me again. Now that we're booking the property with Harvest Hosts, I'm back to spraying.

Hoping to start tree pruning next week. I think I'll see to my pruning tools tomorrow.

For now, it's tinkering time on the Brick again... I think I'm putting the R&R bed back in, as the parts for the new bed won't be here 'til at least next week. Gotta fiddle with the trans linkage again--how can a simple rod be so hard to get right?

Having finally accumulated the huge pile pile of suspension parts required for a comprehensive refresh on an old BMW I moved other cars out of the shop, swept the floor and cleared a path to my strut spring compressor.
Took another look at this giant pile of parts, opened a beer and thought "tomorrow".

Threw the door up, put all the stuff I hid inside back where it belongs (trash cans, BBQ grill, etc). Hopefully the winds are done for a while.

Then I pulled the car out, aired up the tires, and took it on it's first "spring" drive. About 1/4 mile down the road, some of these guys ran in front of me (sorry for the crappy, blurry pic):

Luckily I was just puttering along. All went well on the rest of the drive.

When I got back, I cleaned my bench, put some **** away, plugged in some dead batteries, and pulled the car back in.

Hope it’s nothing too serious Kay.
I spent a couple hours on the ladder the other day, fixing my roof before the high winds and rains came again. For some unknown reason ladders beat me up. And, obviously, moreso as I age ungracefully.

I'm slowly healing. I think by tomorrow I'll be in a better place, and probably over it all by Monday.

Tonight I've had a warm puppy laying along my legs, and now another laying across my legs making both failing bits feel better. They're a blessing.

Your title may be short but I would sure as hell hate to write your job description

Started going through the couple remaining boxes in the garage from when we moved here 4 1/2 years ago. Found some new parts that were never installed on my long gone 2000 Ranger & my wife's old 99 Explorer Sport we sold last year. I have a set of new front brake pads that fit the Ranger or the Explorer if anyone needs them.

Finished enlarging the laser.

I've probably asked this already. Do you have ventilation for your laser? And a cover? The only reason I ask is that mine raises quite a bit of smoke, especially since I upgraded the module to 20 watts. And oh does it stink when I do plastic or leather and the like.

You probably know, but just in case. . . shoes make a big difference on ladders. Work boots with stiff shanks are good. Sneakers not so much. (Pretty sure you aren't into Florida Safety Shoes, but those aren't good either.)

No cover. Right now the ventilation is an oscillating fan and opening the shop doors. There's an 8' garage door on two walls of the shop and if I open them up, there's a good draft that flows through. I'm working on better ventilation with a ventilation fan and a nearby window so I can keep the big doors closed when it's colder outside. If I'm burning hazardous stuff (plastics) I put a mask on.

Repaired the vanity lamp connection on the Crosstrek's visor:

1774025191988.png

The mounting plate on these visors tends to crack at the pivot, leaving them flopping around as you drive. Subaru wants you to buy the whole visor assembly. There are aftermarket replacements for just the mounting plate, and you can see I used one. You can also see it required augmenting with a hose clamp to get proper friction. Anyway, the connector doesn't fit through the mounting plate, and there didn't seem to be any way to pull the pins out of it, so I had to cut it off and reattach it. The severed connector's been lying on my workbench waiting for me to get around to it for some months, and I decided to finally take care of it before it got itself lost.

This is my burner box, if it helps.

It's that time of year again....

Put my gardener hat on again today.

X3. I'm not sure what to do with that Spirea bush at the back of the bed. I'd like to cut it back to the roots, but it didn't respond well to that when a coworker did that t few years back. Maybe now that it's better established?

As usual, Spring (Happy Equinox, y'all!) gets hectic hereabouts. I have to take care of all the yard stuff, plus the PTBs start piling new projects on. If I want to get some tree pruning done Mon-Wed, when we're closed, I'll probably have to work through the weekend. I have a pile of 16 10' 2X4s to make 16 more of the picnic table braces. If I get cutting on them tomorrow, I can install them before we open at noon on Sunday--I think.

Then get the drip irrigation system for those beds fixed back up after the winter carnage--and the spaghetti hoses I cut while clearing the beds out.

Then maybe take Thursday and Friday off to go somewhere. It's supposed to cool off some the next few days--82F right now--so maybe down in the canyons would be a nice place to go for a campout... some nice campsites I haven't visited in a couple of decades down there.

Maybe I'll even get the power windows fixed and new bed installed in the Brick by then....

Beerhippie - this one is for you. Enjoy!

I had a coworker up to recently who did a lot of what I do around the facility. He left trails of cut zip ties, zip tie tails and screws everywhere he went. I'm still picking the damned things up.

He's also a river guide and I bet I could track him down the river just by following the trail of zip ties....

Of course, tracking someone down a river isn't much of a challenge.

Almost too nice of a day here to work out in the garage, but ended up there for a few hours after a bit of yard work. Started by putting up some shelf standards and shelves on a bit of unoccupied wall in the wood shop. Since my space is finite, I’m trying to make the most of it by going vertical. I’ve got 10’ to work with and a lot of stuff in that vast middle ground of “rarely used, but too good to give away”. I’d prefer cabinets, but this is quick and functional.

While I was on the ladder, I removed 3 runs of RG6 from one end of the wood shop, over 20’ down through the slab a couple feet and into ground and back to the house in PVC underground. In the process, many zip ties (including a dozen or so that were left untrimmed). Apparently seeing a photo of zip tie tails triggered Beerhippie’s OCD, so hopefully this will be an important first step toward healing this trauma.

I finished assembling the Rotax 717. The original engine that blew up was black. You can see how much of that was still useable..........YEP, not much. So, if your mechanic says it's junk, a "lost cause" then you better find a better mechanic with more of a CAN DO attitude.(y)(y) Now it needs scuffed, wiped, and painted!

Subaru wants you to buy the whole visor assembly.

Curious what Subi wanted for the visor assembly. I swapped out the drivers visor on my SIL’s Honda Pilot with an aftermarket last fall after the dealer quoted nearly $600 for the OEM.
