I just happened to throw on a new show - Deser Car Kings... They are doing a Tbird. Casually watchning, then saw them in the spray booth...

OMFG - Larry the bodyman - is shooting the car with just a dust mask in the booth... fumes everywhere - looked like they were not even using HVLP fumes were that bad in there... His mask was all green... mask, not a respirator... The guy he was giving a hard time was using a respirator.

What an idiot.

They were also shooting in t-shirts, jeans, hat - and they were probably wondering why they were getting fish eyes, dust, and stuff in the finish...

Still laughing at the show here - they just had a shot of the roof with the flourescents reflection - Even on TV you could see the dirt and imperfections in the paint on a horizontal surface. I think a 10 year old could shoot better than that.

My concrete patio has a better finish... That shot of the roof was craptacular, there were also a couple of *holidays* on the front fenders..

Even a respirator won't cut it with modern clears. The harmful isocyanate gets in through your eyes. A positive pressure system with a full face mask is the only safe way to go.

I haven't watched the show but I think I have it recorded. My wife won't like it. She gets irritated when I yell at idiots on TV ;-)

I watched the show last night too. Pointed out the mask to my wife. Even she knows better.

Full resto my A$$. They fixed a few tears in the interior and slapped a paint job on it. Well, I know they did a little more then that, but a full restoration that was NOT. Does not look like they even used primer or a sealer before the paint was applied. :headscrat

Yes I was yelling at the tv the entire show too.:wtf:

I posted about this show on the Free Parking section. The whole show is ridiculous. Bad fake dialogue, bad fake drama, bad fake restoration.
I love all things automotive, and I deleted the stupid show before the end and cancelled the rest of the recordings.
It's beyond bad. When you see the "restored" T-Bird, you'll ask yourself...."Are you kidding me?"

Yeah.....I posted in the Free Parking section on this.... Another joke of a car show. I like the shots of the cars in the yard.......they ought to stick to that instead doing half assed "restorations".....:wtf:

To be fair they are trying to do their "restorations" to make them affordable to most people. They say that in the intro. I don't think they're claiming Barret Jackson worthy restorations.

The dialougue between the son and dad seems very scripted. That's not the way two people talk to each other.

I saw the shot over the cars hood that everyone is talking about. Seems to be dust on the car after paining, not in the paint.
For what the car sold for I'd say it didn't look too bad. But I don't see this show lasting long. Just wasn't very interesting. Seemed scripted and above that, American Chopper has the monopoly on every project having impossible deadlines. (even though I've gotten back into American Chopper) At least their drama is entertaining.

Tremclad used to be our paint of choice ... still is for some things. When we were in our 20's my brothers and I were very sophisticated. We made a painting mask out of an old hockey goalie mask - "Jason" style - and guaze. Dip the guaze in water, put it on your face, strap the mask on tight! Brilliant eh' I don't remember the word "isocionate" being used much back then.

When they brought the car in, apparently the carburetor was missing. So, they slapped one on, started it up and called it done. I was wondering about how long that car had been sitting out in the desert, with dust and dirt filling up the manifold...

Their auctioneer seemed pretty clueless for a guy working at a vintage car salvage yard - he was in the Thunderbird parts house picking up some parts, and noticed the promotional models in the display case. He acted as if he'd never heard of them before. I can only assume that was part of the script as well.

The auctioneer is the worst part about it. You can just tell he's loving his fifteen minutes of fame. They way he talked to everyone was so fake. So scripted. He wasn't being real, he was acting like he was interviewing for an anouncer job for the evening news or something.

At least with American Chopper the fights and dialouge is real. At least there you're actauly watching them do something. This show is less about the cars and more about the drama and everything else BUT THE PROJECT.

I like the shows on Saturday morning like Trucks, Horsepower TV, Muscle Car, Extreme 4x4.

Cut out the BS and show me how to do stuff. Isn't that what most people want to see?

I didn't watch the show and based on what has been posted here I probably won't. I did want to point out though that there are automotive paints out there that are safe to paint with just a dust mask on. They are water based. One company that makes them is Stewart Systems. It is a popular paint system to use on airplanes since most of the time you are painting in something other than a dedicated booth (hard to get the airplane to a local automotive shop)

That is my only reason for watching any of those shows. I could care less about the drama. I watch other shows for that.

We use AlumiGrip, PPG or Dupont... Did a Spitfire with Centari... & you can still get the *good* Imron avaiable for use in Aviation ;)

I wouldn't recommend the stewart paint for something like a spitfire. It is more suited for the regular piper and Cessna's. I plan on using it when I finally get to the point of needing to paint my Sonex.

Unfortunately they were back again tonight...

Who knew "Fully Restored" meant they you don't take the trim off to paint the car...what a disgrace to the entire classic car community!

I watched it for a third time tonight. I'm thinking one of two things; either the target audience is not "car guys" or the people who make it are idiots. They kept talking about Ford Galxies but half the old advertizing photos were of Chevells and Novas and they were calling them Glaxies.

Only reason I keep watching is to see all the cool old cars in the yard.

This has to be the worst acted out show on tv. They just broke the rear glass of their 64 cuda and it was obvious that they did it on purpose just to give them a "problem" to have to fix.

I actually like Sons of Guns they do some pretty neat stuff in that shop . Desert car kings I am actually still watching purely for entertainment value. SWMBO ( she who must be obeyed ) was actually out here tonight when they were scrambling to replace the started in the " restored " Baracuda . Even she said why the hell are they having to replace a starter on a car they just restored :D. I pointed out the dust cloud that fell from the car as they were pulling the starter and said it was a " cosmetic " restoration . I have yet to figure out how they have so much money ******* in a paintjob and interior when they do the piss pooor paintjob inhouse.

Keith, that is the most awful advice I have ever heard. NO paint company in this world would ever recommend painting ANY product without a proper respirator and other protective equipment.

Look at it this way, our bodies are made of mostly water. Our bodies will actually absorb waterbased/waterborne paints. Our bodies will at least try to defend itself against solvent based materials.
Look at a MSDS sheet for any given paint toner. The paints, including waterborne paints, are filled with additives to give it your colors, the effects (such as metallic flakes and pearls), drying agents, color holdout, etc.

All of the reality shows are based on drama. When they broke the back glass in the Cuda I turned it off. You knew it was going to get broken by the way they kept saying that it absolutely could not get broken. I don't believe 10% of the drama between Jr & Sr on American Chopper is real. Just a way to keep making money. I hate em all. If you watch American Pickers you can see that they are trying to introduce the drama with the chick getting involved.

Not only that but only the base coat is waterborne. The clears are still solvent based in waterborne systems.

My brother in law bought a 66 baracuda project a few years ago. He tore it all apart and determined it wasn't worth fixing at the time. He was going to buy quarters and other body parts from DVAP but ended up buying the whole car.
So he has an extra back glass. Kind of ironic that DVAP ended up needing one.

I spent almost five years as the EH&S manager for an auto parts company at a plant that did exterior trim parts. We molded, painted and assembled mainly mirrors, but door handles, etc.

Our paint booths had such incredible airflow that you could walk in with no respiratory protection and not even detect the odors of the paint solvents. Our isocyanate booth was similar (although "I" wore a full face respirator). Sadly, though, it was a regular occurrence for me to be called to the isocyanate booth for someone having a horrible reaction after having been exposed for ages and finally developed a sensitivity. We retired many employees who became so sensitized that they could no longer work in the plant.

After almost 20 years of occupational exposure to all manner of methyl-ethyl-death, I'll barely brush rust-o-leum without at least a half-mask respirator.

As for MSDS listings, most commercial coatings are the same, with merely variations on the theme. I spent WAY too much time with them for air permitting and reporting, WAY too much time.

That said, before I went to work for the auto parts company, I was the environmental engineer for one of the world's largest magnet wire production facilities. The coatings there make paint fumes look like mother's milk! Better yet, the wire plant where I worked had the chemical plant that made the enamel used on most of the magnet wire made in the world. That job was a lot of fun, too bad most of my co-workers were unethical bastards.
