nothings wrong with what i have, i just want the new better quality ones

I havent looked at the difference in person. What exactly is improved on the sockets?

When you walk in the door to HF, there use to be a sign hanging from the ceiling, stating something along the lines of... Satisfaction guaranteed, for any reason, No questions asked, etc, etc.

+1. Yes there did and now mine is gone. Strange indeed. I thought about it when I noticed it missing. My store has a '****' and a 'coupon Nazi'!

It doesn't matter what was wrong with them, HF policy says for any reason I can exchange, BUT I think this policy is changing.

Compared to the new design I am dissatisfied, that simple.

I think my happiness is important to HF, not just locally either...

How many people here purchased HF items because of me? Seriously, if you did, please post up in here what you purchased and why?

Do you know why the 20% off coupons are limited; do you know why HF is changing there tool line up?

The answer is this site... HF is watching and I have proof.

One example... Look at the inspection camera, the old one would not fit down a spark plug boss, comments about that were made here and few months later the come out with a new redesigned one that will fit down the bosses.

HF is at least looking. I personally, have sent them links to posts on these forums. I can't comment on any response they may have as a result.

John, you don't need to explain to the morality police. Some of these same people buy up old snap-on tools and ship them back because they know snap-on will ship them new tools and a bunch of other stuff I won't mention (or can't here) so if you are working within the bounds of the HF warranty more power to you. Some of the same people who give you greif do things so underhanded they have no right questioning your actions. I get a little tired of some of the holier than thou attitude passed out around here. Trust me in the case of a few it's all a pure sham. I don't have to name names, they know exactly who they are.

Preach on brother! I am with you completely.

I am interested in knowing too. I keep hearing that HF is improving their quality, but it's always a generic statement and I am just wondering in what way. I'm glad to hear it though; I love HF!

The chrome finish has vastly improved. The broaching of the throat and drive area is much cleaner. The sockets appear to be forged now, rather than sintered powder metal as is the current rage in manufacturing...I cut one in half on the band-saw and was surprised to see smooth solid stock, rather than the grainy texture that a sintered powder metal has.

tell that to the kid in the shop who broke his 19mm and 21 mm hf impact sockets after 1 use

I work in manufacturing. I know the difference between junk "steel" and real steel, whether it's 4140, 4340, 1018, 12L14, 8620, 9310, 303SS, 304SS, 312SS...if you really think that SO has some "super" metal that they use on their stuff, and that China doesn't have a few metallurgists/engineers working at some of their companies, you're drinking the Kool-Aid.

Stuff breaks. Is it better when it's a $5 tool or a $200 tool? Because honestly, I'd rather break a $5 tool and take it back than wait for the tool truck to show up and MAYBE they have one on-board, or maybe you gotta wait another week for it to come in.

Even your precious SO is offshoring their **** to the dreaded "Asian horde" so that they can twist a few more bucks out of everything AND selling it at the same price. You can keep insisting that your corporate dedication is patriotism, or you can wake up and realize it's all about business...and in business it's the bottom line.

Like it or not, HF is here to stay. At least they are improving the quality of their offerings, and not depending on the legacy of their brand to keep money pouring in based on memories of the bygone days.

Or, you could ask me about the HF sockets. Tonight I used my HF Pitts Pro 1 1/8" impact to loosen / move the steer leaf springs on a Freightliner Century, replaced a rear drive shock, etc. On the front spring, I pounded the u-bolts with my (nearly new) Snap-On MG725 until the socket wouldn't spin any more.

I also used my 3/8" drive HF impacts (on the end of my MG325) to replace a cab shock, loosen TriPac motor mounts, etc.

And those are just -my- uses, -tonight-. The several other guys in the shop have been using their HF impacts for months, or even a year or more. And what I mention above is just regular, daily use.

As far as their impact sockets, I can tell you of my experience. Their old line ("regular" Pittsburgh) was very crude. Rough surface finish, some kind of painted / rolled on numbers, sharp edges to the socket internal, etc. However, most importantly (to me), was the interior design of their (supposed) deep well sockets.

These sockets -looked- like a deep well socket on the outside. However, when you looked at the interior chamber in the socket (where the nut actually goes), you'd notice that...it's not much deeper than a "regular" socket! IMO, the "old style" deepwell 1/2" impact sockets were basically just a regular short socket with an integrated 1 1/2" spacer. They were not usable as deepwells at all.

In addition to the short well, the "through hole" (normally used to allow a bolt to extend into the socket for clearance) was rediculously small (as in, 1/4" hole on a 1 1/8" socket!), and often nowhere near the center of the socket.

I bought 2 of the old "Pittsburgh" 1/2" drive SAE deepwell sockets when they were on sale a couple of months ago. The FIRST TIME I tried to use one of the sockets, it bottomed out on a nut / bolt I was trying to remove. I ended up having to borrow a co-workers SO socket instead. Afterward I started looking the socket over to figure out why it hadn't worked, and I noticed all the issues above.

Contrast that with the "Pittsburgh Pro" 1/2" drive deepwell impact sockets that I now have. The surface finish is much more smooth. The sizes are stamped / rolled -into- the metal, not just a paint -on- the metal. The interior wells of the sockets are much higher quality, with nice radii on all edges, radius on the circumference of the opening, etc. The interior well of the deepwell sockets are -actually deep-, meaning these sockets no longer bottom out like the old ones did. The "through holes" are all on center, and MUCH larger in size (ie, large enough to actually work), etc.

Do you have any specific recommendations on a 1/2 inch metric socket set. Looks like harbor freight has several. I was hoping you had advice about the 1/2 inch ratchets as well.

Honestly, not really. I only have what came in my 301 peice set; they are great though.

The new sockets look awesome, but I have never used them.

It worked well, really well in fact.

Oh, and thanks for all the postive comments guys.

Hello MNJ,

I'm new on this site. Been reading up on this thread because I am a fan of HF too! I do have to say, you have a pretty impressive collection there.

I was wondering about this particular FWD Front Wheel Bearing Adapters tool from HF. I have an '06 Civic which might potentially need a new front wheel bearing replaced and wanted to know if you think this tool would do the trick (so I don't have to pull out the whole hub/knuckle from the car)? Or at best, will it help me pull/press the bearing? I can't tell how this tool works and there's no product manual available on the HF site.

Thanks a lot.

I find this a fascinating read. In fact, I've just spent about an hour sifting through it all.

It made me realize that there are some people who are hard on tools and other who aren't. I'm one of the latter, my father is one of the former. Now I'm not a professional mechanic, but I've been wrenching on various things from trans-axle swaps on mi-80s GMs to nut-and-bolt restorations on Jaguar E-types since I was a kid, or about 15 years. My father ran an auto parts store and growing up I worked on a lot of race cars, hot rods, and motorcycles. Most of my tools are that vintage and they're a mixed bag of Craftsman, Stanley, Blackhawk, and I've filled in some holes in the last few years with some Husky and Harbor Freight "here's and there's". In all that time, I can count on one hand the number of tools I have broken. Honestly, I can't recall ever breaking a wrench or socket. My ratchets are all at least 10 years old and most of them are 30+ hand-me-downs from Dad. I've rounded screwdrivers and snapped drill bits, but outside of that, I've always been lucky. This thread made me think that maybe there are just those sorts of mechanics out there, who are like me, and don't break their tools, and there are those sorts like my father, who seems to constantly break tools. I wouldn't say he is a better wrench than me or visa versa, its just a different style and methodology.

Now I've had some problems with quality on some HF tools, but I've never had any trouble with their return/exchange policies. And I like the HF tools I have, I wouldn't have bought them otherwise.

i finally finished my, now, mis-matched set of swivel impact sockets. i started in early january. as soon as i bought the first 3 sets, half inch drive metric and sae, and 3/8 sae, they dis-continued the whole line and there were none to be found. about a month ago they started stocking the new line. this afternoon i picked up the last set for my collection, 3/8 drive metric. they're a different design. it does kinda bug me that they don't match the other 3 sets but there isn't alot i can do about it now.

John, wow. I started as a boat mechanic 22 years ago, and by that I mean tune ups and oil changes. I bought my first real set of tools from the SO truck. Basic tools, oil filter wrench, SAE sockets, some screwdrivers and feeler gauges and such, cost around $1200. I have been going to HF over the years for consumables, and have been watching the quality of the tools go up. I have an impact set and electric impact gun, going on 5 years now. I got outta boats and am a SERIOUS enthusiast/ paid home mechanic and don't have a complaint about them. As I see tougher looking tools there I buy them. Sure I've had some go bad, I would never buy a 100 piece set for 20 bucks, but some of their other stuff has been working great. People knock me sometimes, but I earn a living and keep costs down. You are an inspiration, and I hope to god, that someone from HF sees this, and gets you to do a testimonial or something.
Keep wrenchin, John, forget about the tool whores.

This is been a great thread. I have enjoyed it and find it fascinating that you would undertake having a shop using almost 100% HF tools.

However, now that it has been one year since your original post. I would love to know....

How are things holding up? Many of the tools in the original post look fairly new. Have they performed as expected? Were there any surprises good or bad?

What would be awesome is if you could do a one year followup post with pictures if you have been using these tools daily. I am sure many here would find it valuable to see how everything has worked out and to hear what your experience has been.

I will be making a video update on the 1 year mark. The tools have held up for the most part. I did warranty the 301 piece set; some torx bits broke, and a 13mm 3/8 deep socket cracked.

I LOVE THIS THREAD!

As my signature implies, im with ya as far as getting whatever YOU like not what other people throw at you.

How do the pittsburgh combos hold up? I keep hearing horror stories of them not being right IE: a 12mm wrench open end is more like a 12.6 and rounds off a fastener. Also, you mention using the compression tester, could you link to which one you got? and how has it held up?

Which torx bits were they? Were they the individual ones like these:

6 Piece Star Bit Set

or the socket drive ones like these:

9 Piece 1/2" Drive Star Bit Set

I bought this set:

100 Piece Security Bit Set

and the T15 rounded off the first time I used it opening up a 1/2" ratchet to lube it. I need to return the set. The bit material is just too soft. I have the socket drive torx set above and I've used them without any issues.

You mean the question that was asked just an hour or two before you posted? Way to go, bub.

Cliff's? Replacements have happened but have been for relatively few tools and totally inline with the amount of tools one kills working daily.

I love this thread! Thanks for posting this.

Over the last few months I have been slowly buying myself some new tools. I hardly use them so I really don't have a use for Snap On. I been buying mostly Craftsman and some Snap On I find at pawn shops and ebay for real cheap. I have been seriously debating whether or not to buy HF (Pittsburgh) stuff. I do have some but I feel more confident to complete my set now with their stuff.

Yeah sorry, I answered this in a few private messages. I will be making a 1 year video update, from the first video I posted. Which is in August.

There will also be a little surprise in the video; no, it's not my girlfriend (and, yes, I know I am late on pics.) Trust me the "surprise" is no big deal, so be prepared to be disappointed, and FYI, it's not tool related.

You know, the OP is in an intresting position right now I think.

He appears to have a majority of HF tools at his disposal. I think this would be a good opportunity for him to do some projects and post them all over this site so the rest of us who dont really know but think we do can see some actual work being done for once with the tools that come from the love it or hate it tool store.

I always thought it would be clever for a full time mechanic to switch over to HF tools for a week/month/year (whatever) and document how the HF tools are affecting the work being performed.

I work with quite a few excellent technicians who have not ONE SINGLE tool truck brand tool to their name. They have plenty of HF tools though and they do not fail to get any job done.

So, the thread is about a man's tools and box. The Great Debate that rages about SO/HF is old, tired, dead, old, tired, and lame. It also does not belong in one man's thread in which he shows off HIS tools of choice.

This is getting locked for now. I will come in here later and delete what does not, in my estimation, belong here because it isn't about John and his tools. Don't take it personally if your post or posts disappear.

ChrisStarks: is "backyard hack" a personal insult? You tagged this thread with that. If it is, then you broke one of our three rules.

John,
I've enjoyed your thread. I retired at 50 from a keyboard career and only use my tools for my hobbies -- a couple of Corvettes and a house. My tools are more money-savers than money-makers.

My mixed bag of tools contains quite a few from HF. Over the past year Harbor Freight has tightened up their return policy and the 20% off coupons have a lot of restrictions. Is that having an impact on your Investment?

Bull,
Thanks for stepping in. I'm way too old for the bickering so I appreciated you closing the thread. Like being in one of those 1950s road trips with "One more sound and I'll turn this car around -- right after I tan your hide."
