My Record No. 00, before and after restoration. This vice was in pretty good shape, except that a small piece of the fixed jaw had been broken off at some point. I degreased it before cleaning it up with wire brushes and steel wool. I cleaned up some dings with a file and finished it with 2 coats of Rustoleum; it's not quite the "Record" blue, but close enough for me. I've mounted it on a ply block, which allows me to clamp it to the workbench with two "C" clamps when I need to use it. It's small size means I can put this in the toolbox/ tote too!

That's the first Record No. 00 I've seen. Thanks for posting it. I have Record Nos. 3, 4, 6 & 8. I bought my No. 4 new in the 70's and have taken pretty good care of it. I plan to restore it too. In the attached picture, the paint at the back of it is original and the front has been resprayed with Rustoleum blue. It's a good match. I also tried Tremclad blue and it's a good match too.

I purchased this Desmond Stephan 81S at an estate sale yesterday. I searched the forum and the web and I can't find any similar to this size. It is a beast and I screwed up my back lifting it into my truck. The cman vise is a 3 1/2 by comparison.

I plan on restoring and wanted to know if anyone knew what the original color was? Also, has anyone seen a Desmond this size?

That's a big *** Desmond! How wide are the jaws? And how much did you give for it?

They are 8 Inch jaws and I paid $165 - a little higher than I wanted to but temptation was too much. Also it looks like it was originally black.

That's the big brother of my 74, its got the same bits on the bottom for bending bars.
I know I've posted this before but I didn't put it on this thread so here we go again.

This is the part for bending bars round a radius as far as I can work out.

I wish I knew, as you can see there's still some red paint on it that I will blast off from the areas that I couldn't get to with the wire wheel but all the ones I have seen for sale have been in the same red instead of the more usual Record blue colour.
I've been trying to find old tools catalogues on the net with Record vices in them so I can put a date it but no luck as yet.
Its also got a removable pad/puck/whatever.
Pad in place...

And removed.

1. The Desmond is a monster vise.....Good Lord that thing is huge....hope your back gets better from lifting it!
2. The Record is cute enough that my wife wants one.....lol It looks very well thought out....unlike Lucas electrics.....I never noticed the rod bending channel until this last photo posting of the vise....very well thought out vise indeed....good kit

Picked up this cool litle Parker vise the other day. 3 1/2 in wide jaws and 9 in long closed end to end.

Looks a decent size as well, I know its bigger than the 74 I have but how big are the jaws?

I picked this up last week from Woody's Welding & Iron Shop in Washington, DC. Woody is closing shop and retiring to Colorado. He got it in the the 1970's from a closed Potomac Electric Power Company plant.

Here's a pic of the vise and another 2 with how I got it out of the Jeep.

A. Very impressive Reed vise! Applause to you for figuring out a good way to move it out of your vehicle. I don't think that I could have been so clever. Do remember us if you decide to do any repaint/disassembly of it.
B. That is the first and only 3 jaw vise that I have ever seen. Is the USA now lagging behind in vise jaws? Cancel the space program and get onto vise jaws.

Thats a nice Parker judging on how nice the jaws align up. Its missing the pipe jaws. This is just a guess, the pipe jaws often got in the way of your work and were often taken out, The pipe jaw on the Dynamic side was long. Also Parker had a two digit # on their PAT 1910 vises. They corrected their pipe jaw problem by the time their PAT 1930 came out and they renumbered 434 1/2

I planned to get some help from a couple neighbors, but then on Sunday morning I saw some stuff on Craigslist that I wanted to pickup that wasn't going to last long. It gave me the proper motivation to figure something out. (It was also about the 4th thing I tried.)
