So, do I just throw another pic up here when it's restored.. or do I post a "Morgan 87 Resto" thread?

Early this week I visited the Kew Bridge Steam Museum in London. If you ever get to London, I recommend visiting. They have some insanely large steam engines that actually run and were used to pump water from the Thames river to London. In the interest of contributing a few more photos to this thread, I took some pictures of some vises in their workshops.

I am not sure who made with first vise, but it was pretty large with about 6" jaws. I can slightly see an oval emblem on the right side.

Another vise from the Kew Bridge Steam Museum in London.

This Paramo #1 is pretty small - about 2.5-3" jaws. A nice cute vice you do not see in the US very often.

Yet another vice from the Kew Bridge Steam Museum in London.

A Record #3 vice. The last two vises were mounted outside near their blacksmith shop.

OK Vise gurus...I can't seem to find the info I'm looking for. I picked up this little beauty today along with several boxes of old tools. It's a Rock Island with swivel base, 4 1/2" jaws and a rear swivel jaw. It's in beautiful shape. From the pics you can see that it says Rock Island No. 52. I can't seem to find that model number anywhere else. Also cast into the bottom of the base is 74C and 74 is stamped into the side of the dynamic jaw.

Any ideas about age on this one?

Jeff

That Rock Island is a beauty! Don't see too many swivel back. Some guys say you can narrow it down from the nose on the handle. Round nose before WWII but I think all Rock Islands might have had round noses. I'm guessing 40's or 50's. Very nice photo shots for GJ. Its a Model 52. Unortunately I don't believe Rock Island's numbering tells you much. I have a 571 and its a 3" do go figure!

Gday toolscrounge

The first vise is a Parkinson. I picked one up at auction about a year ago. see pick. is is a very solid piece (overbuilt) with a quick release mechanism. I am very happy to use it. i thought about cleaning it up but i like it looking old and used.

Made in England

I have a 5" Monarch that looks to be very similar. If you end up getting it, PM me and I'll get you the measurements and some photos.

I snagged it yesterday afternoon. It's actually a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be. It does have 4" jaws but when the guy pulled it out I couldn't help but think it looked tiny. It's 7" tall if that helps anyone visualize it. I'll take some pictures when I start to strip it down.

Looks like a 1/2" diameter handle would be perfect for it...I'll be posting in the "Unofficial vise parts swap thread" soon.

I bought this 4 1/2 inch Starret at the Barraboo, WI swap meet for $75. The fellow selling it said it didn't seem to bring much interest. I asked my son who was walking ahead of me why didn't he grab it? His answer, I'm not going to spend $75 on an old vise. Yost is now selling it for $539.95. The original color under the brown is green. I called Yost and a fellow told me some were painted a green with blue specks in it. I think I will paint it a hammered green.
What do you guys think the color should be? Larry

Larry - I hope you are smiling.....that is indeed a steal for such a great vise...it looks square and not abused. Color? Lots like the Verde Green Hammered from Rustoleum. Hard to find color (at least for me...mail order only). Finish it however you think it needs to make you smile when you look at it.

teleman - Starrett makes great tools. That vise is probably no exception...for $25 it will outlast all of us and be a bargain besides.

James -you are getting quite a varied collection there....very nice old Reed and an interesting Columbian to boot.... the Littlestown vise cleaned up really well and looks great in a "raw" type of condition....the older Craftsman vises are starting to get a lot of attention now, I am seeing more of them offered all the time

OSAO - for $20 for vise and stand? run fast since that deal should have been theft...LOL

Ran across this old Prentiss No. 54 recently at a local flea market. I blasted it and painted it and put it to use.

dgmpam - Congratulations! That is the definition of a proper vintage vise.....great structure lines....looks to be in very nice condition....my Prentiss Green Eyed Monster has risen and Really Likes that vise. However since you have no location listed under your name, I can't come...."inspect" it some night while you are at the Justin Bieber concert.

That Starrett also says "Athol" which is a good vise.
I'd have grabbed that one in a second.
