I know the Magic guys well. I convoy down for their annual show in a group of about 12-15. They bring a pretty big group up to our show as well. Happen to know Leroy Daniels?

Don't recall the name but might recognise him if I saw him. The car clubs here help each other out a lot with car shows, friendly rivalry.

Hi. Long time lurker here. I thought I would post a vise that I obtained last weekend. It's a York. On one side it says York and on the other it says 100L. I don't know a lot about these vises, but it was a lot cheaper than the similar Wilton that the guy was selling.

Congratulations on the purchase! There is a very long discussion on the history of the York vise and its connection with Wilton. Do a search in the control panel for York Vise and read about it. Was it the Original Bullet before Wilton or did it copy Wilton? The Shadow knows.....LOL

Here are a couple pictures of the latest addition to my vise family. This is a Morgan 10A that I picked at a yard sale for $5.00. My happy meter is still redlining. After my home made rust buster treatment, it opens and closes quite smoothly. Some questions:

1. What is the dead bolt slide on the moving jaw used for, and are there any pictures of how it's used?
2. What are the best choices of woods to use in the jaws?
3. Any reason UHMW is not a good choice for wood vise jaws?
4. Has anyone mounted this vise as a stand alone, and if so, are there any pictures?

I'll post more pictures after the restoration.

The little sliding dead bolt thing is for use with a bench dog. The bench dog is a pin that sticks in a hole in the surface of a woodworking bench, and you can clamp boards between the dog and the vise.

Here's one example, this one has round wood dowels for bench dogs but they can be square and metal, too.

I'm assuming you know that is a woodworkers bench vise. It get bolted to the end of the bench so the jaws are just flush (maybe a little clearance) to the top of the table. Usually one edge is also flush with one corner of the bench.

Wood workers benches are thick, usually hardwood, and will have a series of hols in the top in line with the "Dead Bolt slide" a "bench dog" is put in an appropriate hols for the piece to be worked, and the dog slid up and the work piece clamped between the bench dog and the vise dog. (not sure if that is the "official" name for it...)

This type of clamping is very handy for planing, scraping and sanding, but of course for other jobs also.

Another thing the bench normally gets is a series of holes in the bench leg parallel to the vise jaws for a "second hand" holder peg to support the long end of a piece of wood.

No its not a good candidate for a stand alone vise. You lose so much of it's potential.

For the jaw pads, I'd stay with a hardwood, but something with a non splintery dense grain. (Not oak..)

For $5, especially for a nice name like Morgan, you definitely land in the Suckage club...

I thought my family's old Columbian was a woodworkers vise but it doesn't have the "deadbolt slide" to use with bench dogs. Was this an option or is my vise for a different use?

The small one I picked up at a yard sale the other day for 6.00 bucks.
* IF ANYONE CAN TELL ME WHAT BRAND IT IS I WOULD BE THANKSFULL!*
The next one is my dads old Simplex that I rehabes a few yrs. ago. I can't seem to find the pics. And the last is a Wilton. I bought from a old body man.
I scraped about a 1/4" of bondo/paint dust from it. It needs new jaws.
I payed 70.00 for it

That's still a woodworking vise, it just doesn't have the dog on it. You could get them both ways.

Thanks (all) for the information. I enjoy that every time I buy something, it turns into an education. Darn! I need to build a new top for my bench :)

Dave - I posted a couple of photos of the 5" Prentiss a few pages back but here it is again.

Here is a nice little Prentiss (of course...what else?) from the 30's. I bought it because it had a cracked slide and paid $18.00 for it. I had a pair of welders (good old boys named Tye and Cooter). They used stainless rod and TIG welded it. They were not happy with the outcome and didn't charge me anything. Now for me....I am very happy with the repair. It is a Christmas gift to a pal who is using a HF vise that has over 1 turn of slop in the handle and it binds every half turn. Sigh. This will work just fine in his garage hobby shop. I didn't go crazy with the resto since he will actually use it as intended. I just wanted to try out a vise with a cracked slide....now I have.

Eric - I have no clue what the little one has for a maker....sorry. The Simplex is a great looking vise....toss a couple of more photos if you want. The Wilton should clean up nicely. Just don't send it to autopts for any reason. His basement is the black hole of Wiltons. I heard he even has a Wilton T-shirt!!! I won't ask him about any Wilton tattoos.

Wilton 5 series-----Picked this up in a box of tools this week-end-No made in USA or Schillar park, Illinois on it-just the #5 on front jaw & wilton on rear side. the numbers 19 and 43 on front & rear jaws. Swivel base with chrome handle and front handle. No markings underneath on slide?? Anyone out there have one like this? Know the year of mfg.? Foreign or USA made? Had the special mount attached for some type of application? My work is cut out for me-will need some rust removal-general cleaning and straightning of handles and some new color. The jaws open to about 5" and the jaw width is 5.5" & total height is 7.5"-wt. is probably 25-30 lbs. (Est.) Probably would be a nice homeowners vise. Any help on age and coo would be appreciated. Thanks......Cranky

Very nice Prentiss! You did an excellent job on it, especially the lettering. May I ask what your secret is? Just a steady hand and a brush?

Its fairly safe to say that was an early Wilton import. I'm sure it would be fine for light & light/medium jobs.

Cracks, bent jaws welds, and make sure the thing isn't beat beyond use.

Note that the swivel base for that one is missing so you will be buying a fixed vise. (Negotiation point...)

Here is my 18yrs old Peddinghaus matador 120
nowadays marketed under the brand RIDGID Peddinghaus (approx. € 128)

- 120mm wide yaws (a tad short of 5'')
- the yellow thing at the inner yaw is a swivel-in-and-out insert for 'round' stuff (approx. € 36), I was too stingy to buy two, as it works for me with one as well.
- they offer 2 multi-grooved yaws at a hefty € 125 as weel, just the price for another one!
- the protectors next to it are made from aluminium sheet metal banged into place and a couple of magnetic felt ones for the very precious surfaces and stuff
- the 'block' underneeth is of aluminium to suit my height (elbow on yaw, when standing upright in your work shoes)

Would anyone care to guess what make of vise this is? I'd like to know a bit about it before I contact the seller, to see if it's worth discussing. Thanks guys.

Yup, definately a Taiwan/China import. I have one just like it on my welding bench. It's only worth about $75 new, so in that condition, like Ian sez, it's only worth $25 tops. Bill

Thanks for the heads-up guys. Sounded a little odd, maybe I'll send him an email offering $25, along with a link to this thread ;)

New Acquisition Report (N.A.R)

Was doing a job in a house for sale and saw this bolted to a bench in the basement. Belonged to the owners ex-husband, she said take it for $5!

I know they were Sears bottom of the line but a nice little 3-1/2" vise that will find a place to be useful. It's a 5244 with a covered screw.

Apparently they came with pipe jaw inserts that just sat atop the screw cover but doubt I'll ever find a set of those.
