I have never seen a Craftsman saw like those pictured and then I realized, you were using those as illustration. My saw was in production all through the 60's, but there were cosmetic changes as the years progressed. Mine is a 10" and I think you must have the 9" saw. Here is a link to the 60-61 catalog and I think yours is on the cover and page 2 while mine follows yours on pages 3 and 4.

That link shows a couple of items that I am use to using around my place, and my pops.

Thanks,
Joe

By the way, does anyone remember that old Greenfield lathe that I picked up a while back?

I needed to reclaim my garage so I decided to sell it. A nice feller bought the lathe and had it shipped out to him.

Just in case anyone is curious...

http://owwm.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=109706

...looks like it went to the right home. I'm super glad:):):)

Crazy is just a perception from others. Some think it is crazy to invest quality time with research and communications here at GJ with such talented friends... But I just brush it off and click on.

Now Dave, are you changing the contest by reducing the number of tools that are in the Garage? Do we all need to reduce our guess by one, or reduction actually make a guess that much closer???

The 'White Unicorn'...

So I got a message a few days ago asking if I was looking for a Craftsman scroll saw. I discussed the matter and was pointed towards a 24" King Seeley scroll saw that was up for sale. I politely informed the gentleman that unfortunately it was not the model I was looking for. The one I was after was the ever elusive, extremely rare 20" self-contained scroll saw that only appeared in the 1956 and 1957 Craftsman power tool catalogs. The White Unicorn.

scrollsaw.jpg

So then he proceeds to tell me that he saw one for sale a while back. He didn't pick it up because it looked kind of odd and at the time had no idea that I was looking for one. And yes, he saved a picture of it.

scrollsaw20.jpg

Reminiscent of those fuzzy, grainy Loch ness monster or Bigfoot pictures

After he learned that it was very rare and I had been looking for one for so long, he was kicking himself for passing on it - be he did tell me that he made a new post asking about it in the event that it did not sell. He told me he would get a hold of me if he heard anything about it. A true gentleman.

So there it is. The White Unicorn. They really do exist, and are still out there. This is the second reported sighting within a year's time, and actually only the second photo I've ever seen of one in the wild, so I'm super jazzed and encouraged that more sightings will pop up. The first one I spotted I followed up very intently, but it was not to be as the seller decided to keep it. It was a power bronze version with the attached work light. I'm kicking myself for not capturing a picture of it. It was beautiful.

While we missed this latest one, I was able to learn more about the saw from the description, which he also saved. This tool was made by Syncro and had a code of 110.24561. It may have had other end codes (like 24562, etc) since Craftsman like to change the code based on year or accessories.

So there you have it. My #1 quest item.

My other quest items you can see below in my signature. Originally I had listed a Craftman-badged 20" Parks planer as a quest item, but soon realized it was too big for my garage (it is HUGE). While Parks NO 20 planers are somewhat 'common' (relative term), a Craftsman-badged one had never been photographed in the wild before. Then about 2 months ago, one was finally found and documented through it's Sears Roebuck tag, although the faceplate was missing.

Seeing that a smaller planer would fill the role more appropriately, I switched my sights to the ultra rare 12 1/4" Planer that only appear in 1956 and 1957 that was manufactured by Belsaw. To my knowledge, this exact model (unknown code #s) has never been seen in the wild, never photographed, and never even discussed. Craftsman's contract with Foley-Belsaw lasted at least until the 1970s, of which you frequently see the Belsaw type planers for sale, but never the original model.

Remember this?

Today is a very good day.

Received this in my message box this morning on the OWWM forum:

***UPDATE: I HAVE YOUR SAW!!!! CALL ME AT *** *** xxxx***

It seems as though the white Unicorn has been caught!!!:willy_nil:rocker::eyecrazy::D

This is breaking news, so I will update you all when I know more.

And of course, a HUGE 'THANK YOU' goes out to this very generous forum member who not only posted a wanted ad for this saw on my behalf, but also took it upon himself to go there, pay for it, and pick it up all in good faith.

Sir, my hat is off to you today.

Awesome news on the white unicorn, Captain Red Leader!! Next target is the white whale, Belsaw planer that others speak of only in hushed tones. When you get the unicorn home, you know we all require many pictures!

I wonder if this is a sighting of your mythical whale, or merely some misunderstanding, Cap'n, as the tale describe ...
http://www.contractortalk.com/f13/old-sears-belsaw-planer-molder-95293/

I am unsure as I haven't seen this beast before and am unsure what it should look like, or be describe as for that matter.

Here is a picture of the one I am trying to find:

12incmanplaner.jpg

In the Craftsman catalog (1956-1957) it stated that this tool would ship from its factory in Kansas City, MO and that is the city was where the Belsaw factory was as well. Given the design cues, I'm confident that it was made by Belsaw (even know I have no direct, concrete proof) and that Sears simply affixed the 'Craftsman' name to it and sold it in their catalog.

A later Belsaw model appeared soon after and looked very similar to the one in the picture in the thread you referenced, but still had the vintage-style logo. The rounded 'Craftsman' logo was widely used right up until about 1959 (it was used in the 1960s on some tools, but far, far less). The model that appeared after the '56-'57 model is very similar, but is attached to a sheet metal legged stand much like it's later brethren from the 1970s, whereas the first Belsaw model had a sheet metal exterior that went all the way to the floor.

I am currently considering this as the rarest vintage Craftsman power tool. A lot of rare Craftsman items have turned up...the 16" Craftsman badged W/T band saws, the Duplicarver, the 10" and 12" Parks radial saws, the swing saw (quite a few of those actually), the 9" Atlas floor saw, the 12" Darra James, the Parks 20" planer (previously undiscovered), and now the 20" scroll saw. To my knowledge, no one has ever seen one of these planers turn up in the wild, ever. Nobody knows what the model number was, or has any other knowledge about it. A good reason why we don't really see any of them is that, first of all, Sear didn't actually stock the item - it was just in their catalog, so if you wanted it you would have had to order it and then wait for it, like the 20" planer. Also, it was extremely expensive for its day - $4300 in today's money. Not many average Joe's could afford such an item, so relatively few were probably sold. Even less given the 2 year window of availability. The 20" scroll saw only had a 2 year window as well, but was 10 times cheaper.

Sears also offered some really cool art deco stands under the 'Companion' brand back in the early 1940s that were only offered for a few years as well, including a general purpose stand (for a band saw, sander, or other small stationary tool), a lathe stand, and then Craftsman offered a general purpose workbench (later I believe). Those are extremely rare items as well - wouldn't mind finding them as well:D

D'oh!!! Yes I sent it your way:)

In Dave's world, everyone would have a name tag, all the time:D

Thanks Dave! Do you remember which location you sent it to? I am sure it will get here either way, we are in the new house now and will change the mail tomorrow. However, even if it went to the old house, we will still be moving stuff for a little while.

It's going to be hard to not have a true garage, but the most of my work is wood work, and machine work, so I really have a better layout to set up shop. Using existing rooms in the basement, I will be able to build a cool little machine shop for my two lathes and the metal working drill press, and tool room in another. The tool room will house my Snap-On box, and many other tools like that. There is one spot that the Unisaw will be built into, with outfeed tables and the like. On the other side there is an area that is well suited to house my wood lathe, planer, joner, and the wood drill press.

I am very happy with the new place, it's really stunning! It was listed as a 1902 Queen Ann style Victorian, but we found some paperwork dating it to 1891, so we are not positive. This house, plus a heated green house in a very nice town with a great location... for less than we were paying on a ranch built in the 50's! It's huge, but with a big family, all but one bed room is being used!

So! The official winner is.... (drum roll)....

Nighttrain!!!

Congratulations on guessing the correct amount of tools (hand held and power tools, corded) in the garage! The number is 26...now the real test is to see if I can recall them all off the top of my head...lets try:

1. 1950s Craftsman palm sander
2. Montgomery Ward bench grinder
3. Craftsman/Parks radial saw
4. Homecraft tily table saw/jointer combo
5. Craftsman scroller jigsaw
6. Craftsman scroller jigsaw (#2)
7. Homecraft scroll saw
8. Atlas drill press
9. Rigid oscillating belt sander
10. Hand held grinder
11. Craftsman magnet jigsaw
12. Craftsman Parks 18" band saw
13. Craftsman Accra Arm radial saw
14. Craftsman grinder (1949)
15. Dremel (corded)
16. Craftsman cabinet saw
17. Atlas Cabinet saw
18. Delta jointer
19. Craftsman jointer
20. Yager K-Line planer
21. Craftsman circular saw
22. Craftsman router
23. Porter Cable router
24. Craftsman 1/3 sheet sander
25. Powrkraft belt sander
26. Porter Cable 2" belt sander

Alright! Remembered them all!

Now the kicker would be which of these tools you could plug in right now and use - we won't go there:D

The number will be going down before it goes up. I have one of the corded scroller saws to donate, the Craftsman jointer, the Homecraft scroll saw in exchange for the Craftsman 20", and the table saw/jointer combo to Stephen.

Since we are storing the car in the garage now, the 'cleanse' has begun. The Unisaws are gone, and more will be going. It actually feels pretty refreshing.

Nighttrain, send me your address and have your choice of any available items as a winning prize! Here is the list (minus the speed ratchet):

Beautiful house! Based on your PMs, I believe I sent it to the old address, since at that time I think you weren't in the new house yet. I think I sent it based on your latest PM.

Jeff, thanks for your constant positive thoughts. When I find something really good in my searching I'll set it aside as something special for ya - you've always been a mainstay in encouraging me and adding so much to this build and more, not to mention the radio.

I really appreciate that connection.

Maybe I need to start searching for some VW bus windows or something?:bounce:

I think had is the key word... But now he's got a 1-car garage!

Dave, not a problem at all. That's what friends are for. I am thrilled with the generosity of GJ members and the willingness to help others or to pass things on. Thanks to you, when I go through my place cleaning up, I now have it in the back of my mind to see what I don't want, but can pass on to a good home. Now I just need to come up with creative contests...

Red Leader - with all the work you have put into your collection I can't believe you don't already have one of these:

I am sure the Delta is Sa-weet but it's a CMan garage after all . . .you gotta.

:willy_nil:evil:

The update is that I will be putting up a 'Rucker request' to see if we can get that bad boy from Chicago to Denver. The good news is that is a well traversed corridor, arn wise, so there should be some folks going back and forth. There is an OWWM event that a local from here is going to and the jigsaw might be going to this same event. That would be idea, but we'll have a backup plan as well.

Doing it this way beats shipping becase A) Shipping on something like this (60+ lbs) is expensive, B) a lot of older power tools get broken by careless shippers and C) Having more people join in the fun is always a good thing and adds to the story!

And, just so everyone knows...Eric is the MAN!
