I saw this on Craig's List and got it, along with some beat up 26" wide three drawer Matco intermediate box, for $500.

This is a KR660B and all the drawers are ball bearing slides, they all operate smoothly and well. It needs some locks, if I decide to get them, maybe a few drawer liners and a good cleaning. Overall it's in pretty good shape and a diamond in the rough. I know $500 is not a really outstanding deal for it but I'm good with it because decent boxes at fair prices don't come along often in the Seattle area.

I didn't even ask for the Matco box, he just tossed it in. Anyway, here's the pics. This guy says he was the original owner and retired because of back problems.

Do you think this was a reasonable alternative to spending ~$300 more for a new HF 56" box? I was torn between those choices and kind of rushed it because there were people waiting in their truck to buy this KR660 if I passed on it.

You can always sell it, I sure those same people will be lining up to get it.

That's a good point.

Beat up Matco that I didn't really want but just took because it was free. I'm sure I'll find something to do with it once I get the drawers running smoothly.

I bought that same box a while back for $700 and I drove 1 1/2 hrs to pick it up! Its a great box. Comparing it to a new HF box is nuts, the hf box isn't even in the same ballpark with being as heavy duty as the Snap-on.

If your heart is really in the HF box, I am sure you could sell the two you just got and still have plenty left over for beer after you go get the box you really wanted in the first place

It's not that I have my heart set on the 56" HF box it just seemed like a great value with the hundred dollar off coupon and I know people hate HF stuff but it seemed like a very well made box to me with my brief inspection and very, very nice for a home box.

I like everything about this SO box except the drawer layout. I would like to have my deep impacts up in the top drawer but I'll figure something out. After I get this one cleaned up and hopefully get the skanky decades old gear oil smell out of it I think it's going to be great.

I'm happy, I would have been happy with the HF box too I think. Just a little case of "What if?" that will pass. I must say I do like having the Snap On name front and center. I know it's a quality unit.

Are you kidding?!!? The KR660, KR1000, and the MAC MB1700 were the best boxes ever made!! The new boxes don't have the thick sheet metal like the old boxes did.

Yeppers, ball bearing. They feel great too. One or two drawers might need a little tweaking but honestly, they all feel pretty freaking good to me.

I think you did pretty well. There are never deals like that in Ohio. I've only seen two *decent* Snap-on deals on CL within 5 hours of me.

Balane, if you decide you want to get the HF box, let me know and I'd probably be interested in buying this one from you. Depending where you're at in the northwest, I'm probably not too far from you.

Thanks

Hmm, I really have no idea on what to ask for that Matco thing. Are you sure? It's pretty beat with drawers that are pretty twisted and very hard to get in and out. It would need a lot of work. I was going to mess with it and see what could become of it. It's honestly not worth your drive down to the N. Seattle area imo.

I just ordered locks from the KR660. Both locks/keys delivered from Snap On for just $38 total. Not bad.

Edit: Ran out of room for these photos in the following reply so the two pictures attached to this post belong with the photos below.

Here it is after clean up. I gave her a quick *****-bath along with some new locks and drawer liners. Cleaned all my tools (I wish they would stay like this.) and moved everything over. I was able to take all the tools off of the wall so I can lock everything up if needed and I still have some room to grow in it, although not a whole lot of space left. I'm very happy with it and I must say, I do like seeing the Snap On name when I look at it. Everything works as it should.

These pics plus the two in the post above this.

i have a HF56" next to my Snapon KR555.... no comparison. the 56" is a good value at 695/795 the kr555 is built like a tank... not bashing as i also own the 42" hf box... you get what you pay for.. but in this case you paid half to a third for the snapon whats its 'worth' in comparrison to the HF boxes... my 56" has funky slides and im no pro i just have lots of tools but i wouldnt say it overloaded by any means but i cringe when i open the 2nd drawer that full of my ratchets and extentions hoping it doesnt fall

I'm 100% satisfied with the decision. The only reason I was considering the HF 56" box was because I like the taller drawers up top for my sockets but I can deal with stooping over for them. This is definitely a very well made tool box, it's build like a tank. Thanks.

You got screwed......
The good news is that I have a kind heard and I am willing to bail you out of that deal without you loosing any money....

I have always liked those boxes
For the mid chest you may want to clean it up and use it to hold drill bits and taps

Not a top box but I need to figure out what I want to do up top. Either a sheet of steel or look for some bulk butcherblock I can buy at a decent price. But yes, something more permanent than drawer liner is going up top.
