The key I'm talking about is the bottom punch installation tool (lower left in this pic); it is also the "screwdriver" for then screw pin for getting the top punch changed out.

Dang. That flat key is missing. Thanks for pointing that out, Outlaw.

It's not a huge deal as a std 5/16 flat blade screwdriver (my Craftsman 5/16 "stubby", with a full sized handle fits nicely) fits everything that matters, screws and dies, on the Jr. Just remember those dies are hardened, (read brittle) so keep the threads clean so the die does not have to be forced. One of the dies in my three sets has a part broken off by a PO so its a bit of a pain to change that die...

I checked the Roper Whitney web site, and could not find a place to get a replacement key. it might be worth it to make a call directly to them to see if you can get it in a "face to face" call...

Sorry to let you down Jeff but today has been off to a crappy start. I read about one sale that promised tons of old tools but it was too far for me. I opted to go to a closer sale and only found some old brass hose nozzles and a few military manuals from WW1

Hopefully something better will come along this weekend so i can dig up some treasure for my garage.

Better start than I for the weekend; no Friday sales here at all worth even trying... :dunno:

Looks like things are starting to brighten up even though i made a huge mistake skipping that sale i previously mentioned. My old man stopped by and filled a small box with Plomb, Blue Point, Snap On and many other wrenches, sockets for a whopping 5 bucks!! Ill go through it on monday and post pics of what he grabbed

He said the house was full of awesome goodies and they were giving it away practically. He bought some early Griswold cast iron and antique carbs for some of his motorcycles. Total cost= 20.00

I'm gonna call and see if i can get down there myself tomorrow and buy the rest of the stuff

Wow, you guys are GOOD!!!

Poor ol' Lump is Jealous!

My swap meet is coming up in just two weeks, and I've been working every day till dark, trying to get the field laid out, signs made, grass stripes killed, paved spaced painted in, final contracts negotiated, etc. Those of you who know me, know that I love to hunt for vintage treasures at any kind of sale. But both today and yesterday I drove right by multiple yard sales and refused to even glance at them as I drove by, in case I might get slowed down.

The payoff will be if my show turns out well, and if we are really ready to receive 35,000 people two weeks from yesterday (vendors arrive on Thursday, May 24th).

But it KILLS me to drive right by. Sigh.

Went to an estate auction today. Picked up a Snap-on TQFR-250 flex head 50-250 ft. lb. torque wrench, fixed Snap-on QJR-3200B 30-200 ft. lb. torque wrench, Matco compression tester, and Mac A/C clutch puller for $121. Now I just need to get the torque wrenches tested to make sure they're within spec. At least whoever used them had the good sense to store them at zero.

Any idea how old the torque wrenches are? The wrenches themselves look good, but the labels are kind of worn and look old.

Not a ton of stuff today, but some interesting pieces:

From the first and last stop, first was the little square; General brand, and last was the two Adjustable wrenches; 8" Proto and 10" Challenger.

At the flea I got these Wiss snips. Some of you may have heard me mention older Wiss are Inlaid here is a marking about it being inlaid with "Crucible Steel" And lastly the J Wiss and sons, logo:

Outlaw,

I was waiting for your inevitable post of new finds for the weekend. Those snips look pretty good! I've got a few pairs that need to be sharpened/painted someday. I went to one sale today and was just stunned at how dishonest/stupid people can be.

I watched a couple attempt to con every single person that would listen to the line of BS they would feed them. I just angry that i actually passed up a set of antique spectacles that were found in President John Adams writing desk.:eyecrazy:

I said the hell with it, drove home and took the woman and her brother to the *****/trap club and shot the hell out of a few hundred clays with my new shotguns i bought last month.:rocker:

That made the whole day worth getting up for:D

A garage sale got me these pliers/cutters mix;

From the top, (If I can remember then all...)

Fullers Dykes, (England, not Japan)
Probably 40's (maybe 30's) Craftsman Dykes No explicit underline, but the font style is distinctive See the closeup/
Kraueters Duckbills and Battery pliers
ChannelLock 410's and Dykes, I think the 410's are really old. see the close up of the markings on the handles.
and last but not least, a pair of Blackhawk ignition pliers. The nut on the back side was missing but I ground a #10-32 nut down and they are good to go!

One handle ahd "Champion Department" on it, something I've never seen on Channellocks...

And comparing the 410's to some 415's and 420's. Notice the arcs are on top and bottom on the 410's, something else I haven't seen on the other styles from Channellock.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the angle on the top jaw of the 410 is odd, it does not fit the angle of a hex fastener, but for an octagonal fastener... :wtf: was their some 8 sided something way back that is not used now? plumbing drain nuts? (before they went to plastic thumb screws, the one's I still have are Hex and rounded Pt... no real help there... :dunno:

And one of the later stops, older Proto ratchet wrench 1/2 & 9/16
Thorsen 3/8 exposed gear ratchet
6 pt Craftsman 14mm Combination, and
7/16 Wright impact socket.

Thanks Bigcaddy, and a day spent shooting is never a waste!

I passed on a bell Ben Franklin used to call the first congress to order, (but at least those people were joking around...)

Do you have any idea how much that bell was worth?:lol_hitti

Hopefully when i head to Cape Cod this summer i can pick up Paul Revere's saddle from his famous midnight ride

It was the most fun i've had outside an estate sale for a very long time and i've been wanting to get the new guns out and put a few rounds through them. The woman has been bugging me for some time now to go there and wouldn't you know it, she out-shot me:D

Some trivia for you... Champion DeArment... the original company name before they changed it to "ChannelLock".

Those pliers are indeed old/vintage!

My turn! I really wasn't sure what this week would bring, as everything looked pretty slow. But between a lunchtime run to an estate sale Friday, and a citywide rummage sale and a couple barn sales today, here's what I came home with:
051212.jpg

Sadly, I had to pass on a great looking, reasonably priced Kennedy mechanic's toolbox combo for lack of space, need, and transportation... What I did get, though, included:
Snips by Crescent (X2) and Wiss, a handful of sockets including Plomb, SK, Action, and others, a couple sets of USA wrenches, a set of WardMaster ignition wrenches in their original case, the Cummins saw attachment (any relation to the engine company?), a couple of Yankee screwdrivers, a couple of auto wrenches (Diamond and Vlchek), Wiss scissors, Lufkin and Stanley folding rulers, a big pile of pliers, and more.

Nice haul Flat! I have three of those Circular/Drill saw attachments, all different makes, and a couple of jig saw attachments. kind of interesting how creative people got to make adapted tools particularly before the 70's...

Is yours in it's original box?

I also got snips and a pair of ignition pliers yesterday as well as several other "plier like" tools; no slip joints, but several dykes, the channel locks, battery pliers, and duckbills. The duckbills are apparently pre 1920, so potentially about 100 years old. I seem to be catching quite a few Kraueter tools of that era lately...

Snuk one in today, despite it being Mom's day...

Two body/metal working dollies, one I've never seen one lint it, small and mostly handle, with a heel or foot. Actually I didn't realize what it was for until I picked it up and noticed hammer marks on the business end...

A top quality General Hardware plumb bob, with a steel tip.

The Hansen Drill set box isn't a Hansen drill set, it's and index for taps and the tap drills they use. all but one tap was there (I had a spare..) and no drills but single numbered drills aren't expensive. It holds fro 1/4 NC to 4-4o NC, with a 10-32 NF as well as the 10-24. I figured it would make a handy set to just grab and run...

Older Craftsman 100 ft tape; It had a belt clip on the back, I can't recall seeing that feature on any other reel type tape. I'll try to nail its era down later, but I'm guessing 40s-early 50's based on the font type.

A mini rigid tubing cutter, now I have two of these...

And last but far from least, a pair of B&L Zepher 7X35 binoculars. Binoculars a a funny item, as most are meh, but once in a while you pick up a pair and realize they are a) crystal clear, and b) focus easily, which for this pair is important and the focus is individual to each eye piece. Price was a no brainer: $5!

:rocker:

I picked up a pair of Klein Lineman's Pliers for $2.00.

The cutting edge looks unused. Is it "normal" that the tips don't touch closed?

Cheers

Jim

lowbucktruck,
Actually, I think they're "Select Steel," which I think was an Indestro brand name?

Outlaw,
Yes, the Cummins saw attachment is in its original box.
I love digging through the $.25/$.50/$1.00 boxes and pulling out handfuls of pliers...
Also, great score on the binoculars! I've found that decent (have some heft, not made in China) binoculars are my most reliable sellers. To be USA-made B&Ls is about as good as you can ask for.

My weekend finds... found an estate sale (wasn't advertised well) while running errands on Saturday. I bought everything you see for grand total of $15 bucks!

Great finds, and definite suckage!

Plvomb wrenches, Proto drivers, and that Dunlap ign. set still in the roll, and looks as new? Dunlap may not have been "Sears best" but that roll just makes it! :rocker:
