Saturday I made a trip about 25 miles away to check out a big sale promising antique tools and machinery. A bunch of rusty junk and a waste of time.

On the way home I was passing by a newer subdivision in our small town and saw a Garage Sale sign. I thought "it can't be worse than the last sale", so I turned off and checked it out. As I left I saw another sale at a house that made me think "this place can't have anything worth stopping for", but I did anyway. There was the usual DVD's, kid's clothes, and glassware, but sitting in the driveway was a box that said "Versa-Vise". It kind of rang a bell, so I looked inside. I found a new. apparently unused, but shelf-worn vise, including the instructions and unopened box containing the mounting hardware. It was marked $30.00, but when I approched the seller, he said that everything was half price! I gladly paid the $15.00!

P.S. The original price tag on the box was $9.99!

It was a washout this past weekend, rain on and off and all but a couple garage sales were cancelled in my area. However, did manage to snag a few things for a total of $6.50:

Cman 3/4" combo wrench
Cman 3/8" ratchet, needs the guts replaced
three Cman sockets, including an 8-point socket (didn't know they still made them)
Plvmb small DOE wrench
Billings DOE wrench, a little rust but just surface
Westcott USA-made stainless steel 15" ruler

Also stopped by the local thrift store on the way home and spent $3 on a nice USA made metal box, the inside is like new, never had stuff in it. Will go nicely on the shelf to hold small parts. I have been replacing cardboard and plastic storage boxes over time with metal and wood, they just last longer, I'm tired of replacing the plastic garbage...

Geez, first major suckage to the south of me, now another major suckage storm to the north of me... :dunno: Maybe these two storms will merge here! :D

You know me too well!
In the second pic, are those Linesman pliers Klein? Nice T&B Sta-kon crimpers too!

The linesman's pliers are unmarked. They are a bit different from the blue ones I showed you last week. That's my 3rd pair of T&B crimpers this year. One came with orange grips, one with no grips, and this one in two-tone.

Sometimes you find a gem in amongst the crud in a tool box buy:

This was in one of the 4 small carry boxes I bought on Sat. I didn't realize at first it was mostly brass, it was so dingy. I also didn't realize it was double ended, and I REALLY didn't notice it had reversible clutches inside to hold 4 different pick diameters, (probably with some slop to boot. in fact this may be for small numbered drills and hand drilling for say, gas orifices. :dunno: )

Anyway after a basic cleaning and polishing (It looks better in person bad lighting for these pics), I actually found a VERY faint Makers mark: A.F.R. inside a small rectangle.

A pleasant surprise!

I'll figure out what sizes it supports and make a set of pics for it I think.

Here's a group of oddities I separated out from the rest for your enjoyment.
Wright 3/8 dr set still in its original packaging.
Craftsman 3/8dr RHFT Flex Head ratchet.
Blackhawk 3/8dr ratchet with push button directional selector.
PLVMB WF-38-T 1/2dr ratchet adapter.
The small gold 1/4dr hand driver is a PLVMB 767.
The large 1/4dr hand driver is a no-name but has a set screw that holds the 1/4driver in place.

Thanks Outlaw!! This site is the ****, i've had a pretty good collection of tools for the last few years adding as i needed. Then i started reading here.........and it all went down hill. I'm all about upgrading anytime its available. Especially when its garage sale / CL items, i can buy them in bulk, keep what i would like to have and then sell the rest for the same if not more than i paid. Loving it and getting some killer tools that i would in other ways not be able to afford.

Thanks everyone for posting pics, lets you know there are still good deals out there!!!!

Pic below is of a few pieces i picked up a couple weeks ago and forgot to post up a pic of. All for $45, paid a little more than i wanted but i got a couple nice screwdrivers. Plus i needed the PosiDriv's. I've needed them in the past and rounded out some screws.

Some folks have garage sales on weird days. I just came home from a short trip and a couple families were having a yard sale on a WEDNESDAY.

And yes, I checked for tools. Aside from a couple well worn plastic tools boxes, nothing but used clothes and knick-knack-****.

Yeah, here in the St. Louis area garage sales are very sporadic. I'll usually head out for lunch during the day and will drive past a garage sale on a monday, or tuesday, they just started here doing them late friday nights in addition to saturdays. so, now if you want the really good stuff, you gotta hit em up friday nights, which works better for me because i got young kids. Some days i just cruize CL garage sale section for a minute in the monrings and youd be supprised as to when odd sales are. and most of the time those odd days are the people that just want to get rid of it, they cant wait for saturday to come.

Don't think I did so well today, pictures to come. Picked up a few larger craftsman wrenches, but when I looked at them after they were in my car, the 19mm I picked up (there were quite a few in this style) isn't stamped USA. It says ST-41311. Think this is a Canadian wrench made overseas? Also got a pair of g-body t-top bags.

You guys have infected me with your tool addiction. First time tool shopping at a garage sale and came home with Proto ratchet, Klein, Snap On, USA Visegrips, 20" Channellocks, and 5 hammers by Estwing, Vaughn & Craftsman.

Went to a sale advertised as having "1000's of tools". I have no idea what they were talking about because all I saw was one older craftman carry box with crappy chineese sockets. Godd thing it was not far. I hate when that hapens.

Only hit one sale this morning, but no tools. Got a case of Atari games, 2 76 Michigan plates, and a 25 plate that only has color left on the letters.

Hey Garage Sale Fans, did you know that a "squeegee" is a tool? And if you have two squeegee's you can say "some tools" in your garage sale ad?

On the other hand I found a Williams superwrench at a sale that advertised baby clothes and household items.

Hit a sale yesterday, gentleman had three boxes of craftsman sockets, and I was unprepared without my "needs and wants" list. Shame shame on me.

Went back today, turns out there wasn't much I needed, save for this:

IMAG0242.jpg

9-19mm all G coded save for the 9 and 18mm which are V's
3/8-3/4 all G coded

Seventeen bucks. I'm pretty happy with that. They're all 3/8, so that nearly puts me full stock on 3/8 stuff because I already had the 9 piece long sets.
