Received these (and other tools) as payment for helping someone clean out their basement. I think the largest vice is a cheap Chinese. Am I right about that? I am going to get rid of it soon and trade for something smaller, older, and better.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion. The bench I bought separately at an antique show. As far as I can tell, it was in a machine shop from the 30s or 40s. You can see the footprint from the original vise, but that was long gone when I found the bench. I'll take pictures of it and other stuff in my livingroom/shop.

Do you think someone could identify what vise was on there originally based only on its footprint and age of the bench?

I bet using the diameter and the number of bolt down points it would be possible to find a near match.

Yeah, a photo of the outline on the bench with a tape measure across the holes would probably give us enough to come up with a match.

Right now, just looking at what can be seen of the outline and the position of the mounting bosses, I'd say you can rule out Wilton. It could be a swivel-base Columbian or Morgan in the 3" or 4" jaw range.

Considering picking up this Wilton vise from Wiltonviseparts.com

wilton-vise.jpg

What are your thoughts?

If your looking for a smaller bullet this one might fill the bill however the auction has not ended. This is a early Wilton and won't have the same features as the later 350S. It looks nice but don't get carried away if there is a bidding frenzy at the end. There are usually a dozen 3 1/2" Wiltons on Ebay at all times.

So after purchasing our house this past May and working on turning my smaller 2 car garage into my "shop" I finally got around to picking up a "new" vise. Back when we rented I had to get a 3" harbor freight vise. I never even bolted it down properly and it was always to small. So after finding this site, and the great and HUGE vise's I had to get one. I came across a 4" Reed No. 24 and picked it up since it was in good shape. It turned nice and smooth and nothing was bent. I grinded the old silver paint and bit of rust down and gave it a coat of black. Here it is compared to my old blue HF vise. After looking at the HF vise a bit closer, I realized the vise had a huge crack on it. Maybe ill build a mini work bench from scrap materials for the 5 year old neighbor and slap this thing on it since he loves tools.

Should last me for a while and eventually i will upgrade to a 5" vise.

There was an estate sale in my neighborhood and I wandered in late on Sunday and purchased a Yost 3 1/2 inch model 803 1/2 "The Gem" vise. Price was right (only $15) but it had been repaired. It also has a chip and place that looks like a grinder took a bit behind one of the jaw faces. I guess we'll see how long it holds up!

Zoomie - Grats man!!! Those are some great vises you got....and unused to boot. (you ****)

Cecil - Parker 272 handle.....12 1/2" ball end to ball end.....5/8" diameter

EOC - over the years....the seller of the Huge Hollands vise has generated lots of comments....my only purchase from them was expensive, the vise was in great condition, they were very friendly, no problems encountered.

Samg430 - if you decide to refresh your Athol vise....make sure to take out the tiny screw on the right hand side of the main body...it holds things together (trust me.....LOL) You have a great vise with an Athol...grats!

Keith - very nice Reed vise and a different one than our usual 104 and 204's, I know about your HF vise since I have one like it and there is a crack in mine too...I still use it but I think once I get moved to Civilization next year the Record vise will take over

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think I have the largest "vise" yet posted here on the thread. It has 9" jaws, currently it has a 28" opening, and it weighs around 3000#. Not sure on the weight as my scales only go to 1000#.

Maybe it's cheating, but it is a vise.

Picked up this 10" Reed today from CL! The price was great but the deal was even better because the guy delivered it to my place of work so I didn't even have to drive to get it! A big plus for this huge chunk of iron.

How much does it weigh?!?!!? What is the model number? I think you are going to make some people jealous. So much for the mighty Reed 109! We have a Reed 110?

It looks like the knob that the handle goes through is bigger than most peoples vises!

Grats BJ!!!
Toss out some more photos when you get a chance since that is a Reed that we aren't used to seeing. This thread gets more fun every day.

Well, well, well. I caught three keepers! But I play catch and release, so I can't let this go on too long.

I apologize, guys. That is NOT a ficticious Reed 110. It's a standard 104. :lol_hitti

I was looking at that other popular thread with lots of photoshopped pictures and I thought hey, if they can do it why can't I?:willy_nil:lol::willy_nil

Anyway, again, it's a Reed 104. And I did get it for $20, so it's a pretty good deal. It weighs 40.8 lbs. Original undoctored pics attached.

LMAO I wasn't even paying that close of attention to the can, but yeah it looks like a Chinese photoshop where the can is floating... (If you don't get the reference, there was a story showing like three chinese people poorly photoshopped into a background on some chinese govt page. One person is kind of floating, the other is in a bush, and the third would have to be partially in the ground, it was funny!)

You still ****, just twice as much now.

WOW I had to pop a nitro pill just to get back to the computer and think for a minute. Everything I knew to be true about Reeds was up in smoke and I was going to have to sell a kidney and milk the cat just to make you an offer. Good job.. I had a fellow who worked for me a few years ago that would have done a similar spoof on us but we took care of him... he would have been 45 this year :lol_hitti):
Well you had me going

I thought the handle looked short, for such a big vise, and the cardboard had bigger corrugations than I have ever seen, but like a 10" Reed, if I haven't seen it, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist! I did wonder about the number 1 0 x?, but the picture with the tape looked real, and I figured it must really be a 10" Reed......

You won't believe me, but I suspected something fishy when I saw it, because the corrugated ribs of the cardboard show through very cleary on the view from the top, and I noticed that they seemed to be too wide for any cardboard I have ever seen. I wondered if you were pulling our legs then. I was going to ask you to photo that pop can again, horizontally within the jaws.

Good joke anyway.

And, delivered to your door for $20? You STILL ****!

Doing my usual prospecting for old iron I came across a couple of gems. The first is obviously a Wilton (Chicago) but the only model number the guy gave me is 1850. He says it weighs probably 80 pounds. It looks to be missing handle for the swivel lock down.

The other is a Prentiss No. 5 which I know is about 146 pounds. I can see that it's missing the jaw inserts and the swivel lock pin for the rear jaw and it appears to be missing a chunk out of the brow over the handle.

He's asking $300 for the pair but I haven't started negotiating. What say ye? I'm more interested in the Wilton since it's in better shape.

These are the only pics I have.

That almost looks like a Wilton C-2. We had those on the 5-ton wreckers in the Army.

I'd say $300 is more than fair for retail, I'd start $150-200 for the pair and see what he says.

If it weighs in at 76 lbs it might be a C1 (4 1/2 inch jaw width), but I'm not an expert by any means.

It could be the 5" C2. Look over that vise carefully. Replacement jaws could be a bargining point. Tell him you will have to have them custom made. ( I might have them) Also check both jaw supports and make sure neither is cracked or missing. Pipe jaws? I can't quite tell if they are in the vise. If gone, thats $100 right off the top. If the breakdown is $200 & $100 respectivly, $200 is a bit much on that Wilton from the photo at least.

I would guess the Wilton to be a C2 size but Autopts is Wilton fluent so believe whatever he says. The Prentiss, I would walk away from and have a spring in my step. The jaw faces are over $100...and that is assuming that somebody didn't use the vise for years without faces. If the jaw surfaces are screwed up then you are really up a creek without a mill to bring them back square or cut new ledges in them. There are other Prenitss swivel jaws out there in better shape.

How do you come up with a price for a vise buying or selling? Ebay, CL, example

Were you looking for a price on that particular vise? Its pretty clean but i would like to see the other side to get a better idea. It does have the "quick release" swivel hold down lever so that's a plus.

Maybe 130-200.00 if you were going on ebay prices but they can vary wildly depending on who's making the bids/offers.

CL ...... I have no idea. We have no CL worth anything in The Outlands. Half the popultion in New Mexico lives in one city and its 225 miles away.

Ebay..... What is the minimum you would take for the vise? Put that as your Reserve and start the bidding at $10. If you get more than your Reserve, then it is extra cake on your plate. If no one bids up to it, then you wouldn't have wanted to sell it anyway. Putting a Buy It Now is great if you know your market and what you want to sell for. If you don't know your market, then it is a waste of time. Don't put a Buy It Now and a Reserve on the same item....folks tend to know that your Reserve is probably your BIN price so its a waste of time. Don't get fooled by folks listing a Prentiss vise for $425 on Ebay....it won't sell....it hasn't sold for months....sometimes they keep listing it for more than a year and it won't sell....Parkers are the same way.

I was just wondering about all used vises in general. I find them from time to time at auctions, estate sales, {shackel 038.jpg
