Hey guys / gals:

First time poster, long time reader - enjoy your forum.

I have a small home shop, mainly geared toward metalwork / machining / welding and repair. I always joke and call it my 'boat'. Money needs to be sunk into something, might as well be in what I love.

Hope these pics don't turn out to big, posting them from another forum.

Anyway, thanks.

Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Welcome to Garage Journal!

I checked out your photos on Practical Machinist and you have a nicely set up shop. I suspect PM doesn't allow linking from their photo album to other websites. If you upload your shop photos to Garage Journal they'll show up in your posts when you link to them here.

Bullnerd,
hahaaha - thanks for getting the boat reference. I tell people this is my retirement fund. I have a machinist friend that has had a shop for forty years, I bought similar equipment to his and paid the same price on the machines as he did forty years ago. The way I look at it, old iron holds it's value, so in a way it's probably a better investment than the stock market. But, that's not the reason for the shop, I love metal work and always have. My dad bought me my first craftsman toolset at 6 years old, he got tired of me borrowing his tools I guess.

Pat, thanks for helping a computer illiterate guys out!

I travel the globe frequently, so my haven is working weekends in my shop building, welding, machining things, making a few extra bucks and always learning along the way.

Best regards,

Glenn

Your electrical situation is giving me fits, but I love the homemade / vintage feel. I've got the same drill press, they just don't make em like they used to.

hahaha thanks, I really do need to clean up the third world electrical wiring in my shop. You start off small and just keep adding and adding, and soon you have wires, extension cords and wire strips all over the place.

Go to your album and right click on a photo and select "copy image address"

Then go to your message - you can open two tabs so you can go back and forth - and click the little yellow picture with the mountains and a box will come up for the image address. Paste the address from the clipboard into the line there (see below).

attachment.php

Do the same for the next photo and so forth. You can put your text between the images.

Not sure what you tried to do in the first post, but nothing shows up for me.

I'm wondering if something is wrong here, I've done just this, but when posting a photo a dialog box pops up and mentions that it will not be posted until it is reviewed by the admin, or something to that effect. If no photo or address is attached, my reply is posted immediatly. These photo addresses are directly from my album loacted here at GJ.

Really sorry for all the confusion guys.

Glenn

Really, really nice setup. Love the station with all the grinders and other small machines.

Am currently building out my own shop. I won't have nearly that much space, but I may have to steal the idea for that grinder station.

Looks like the pics are working now?

Jess, definatly steal any ideas you want, I know I do:)

I got tired of chasing grinders around on those little three legged stands, so I came up with that idea, very handy.

The tapping machine works awesome. I have all the taps and correct pilot drills set and ready to go next to the machine. I machined a plug and inserted it into the hollow spine of the drill press. I machined an eccentric hole in this plug and pressed twin spherical bearings that supports a vertical stub shaft to mount the pulley and sprocket needed for the extra reduction.

Also I machined a mating hub for the spindle to accept a large sprocket. A 1 hp three phase motor drives a v-belt to the stub shaft (this is tensioned by the motor bracket) and the stub shaft sprocket drives the large spindle sprocket, I tension this by rotating the eccentric plug in the hollow column of the spine.

The 1725 RPM reduces to around 125 RPM at the spindle, I use the foot pedal to instantly plug reverse the motor - I turned the body down of a 'General' brand hand tap holder to fit the drill chuck, this holds taps up to 1/2".

This set-up works amazingly. I could have used my Bridgeport for tapping, but it has a very sticky quill and I wanted a dedicated machine instead.

I'll post some build pics when I return home in a couple of weeks.

Found pics over on my PM site.

Sorry if these are big (and crappy from my smartphone)

This probably should be posted in a new thread. Let me know if I need to start a new thread.

This photo shows the small A pulley that ended up being replaced by #40 chain, the pulley was just too small and lacked enough friction to transmit all the torque.

So I went with a primary A belt drive to a secondary (final) chain drive)

The pressed in spherical bearings I used were out of the cheap two bolt pillow block bearings you can buy at the farm store. $6 bucks each or so. They even come equipped with a set collar on one end. I use these type of bearings in all sorts of projects.

Best Regards,

Everybody does give me hell for such a clean shop, but work gets done weekly in it and gets very messy, I guess I missed my calling sweeping floors professionally.

I have habbit of cleaning up dwarf and oiling ways frequently, I think I just need to let go a bit more often.

Great looking shop!

One question though, why do you have a Gibson SG hanging in the garage?

I'm a bit of a classic guitar hound as well, so I have an amp under the work bench and after I finish cleanup on the weekends, I have a few cold ones and let the neighborhood hear my latest rendition of purple haze. :)

THat SG is the designated shop guitar.

Very nice shop. No such thing as "pic heavy" when it comes to machine tools! How do you like that Glacern vice? I'm looking forward to owning one.
