Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Good day in the shop today. Got a couple of projects done. I got in on the moster deal on the Yost vises so I dismounted the Chinesse vise that I've been using for years and got the Yost mounted on the metalworking table.

Also made a mod to my HF cart so I could put my pry bars and big screwdrivers in it. Few hours work, a piece of 2x2 alum angle and a little paint and this is what I got. Super happy with how this turned out.

Changed the water pump, timing belt, and valve cover gasket on my 00 VW Golf. I think they couldn't make it any tighter if they tried...

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

dismantled the lift cylinders and pump reservoir for my new to me Weaver lift. cleaned out all the black gook that was inside the cyl housings, from worn out old seals, once I poured off the old fluid, cleaned a few superficial scratches in the rams (inch long here and there that I could just catch a fingernail on) and cleaned up some burrs and such within the cylinders with a file and some emery cloth... mostly adjacent to the fluid inlet fitting and at within the top edge of the cyl just below where the gland nut threads end...
I was blown away at how little there is to these cylinders! new ones are $900+apiece certainly nothing here I saw that makes them truly worth that
(other than that I couldnt use my lift without them) no pits gouges etc that would justify having to replace either cylinder, though the reason for taking them apart was that the PO and his landlord claimed that one side was a leaker when I bought it, had a rag wrapped around the gland nut like a bandanna though not much of a mess on floor like i'd expect, considering how bad they claimed it leaked... figured that since the lift is apart nows the time to do em both...... also seperated the motor/pump from the reservoir to dump that fluid and clean that reservoir housing of "black gook" while Im at it.

Worked in a friend's driveway today. He has a ministry of trailers for disaster situations, today we worked on the shower trailer. To make it count for this thread, we were in the garage several times cutting 2x8s and pvc. We did subflooring and some plumbing in the trailer.

It's going to have four showers as seen -- and there will be shower surrounds! -- an ADA shower, a wheelchair lift, a 500-gal tank, and a tankless water heater system. Poke around at missionsonwheels.org for more pics.

Work on both Mustang garage queens today. The bumper for the coupe and the spoiler for the vert came back from the painters today.
Those parts got installed and we did some preventative corrosion maintenance on the coupe.
That included painting the stock rotors, some of the under carriage, and cleaning everything south of the drive shaft.
The front of the under body is next.
Spring car show season is just around the corner!

I am so happy I had foresight to add a natural gas line to the garage so I can have heat in the winter...truely the best thing you can install in a garage!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Removed the lower wall trim as it had warped when painted!
Re-cut the new replacements to size and for all the electrical outlets too. Managed to cut out from the scrap panel a couple of inserts to go either side of the door opening.
Cleaned up and set up the trestle in the garage so I can paint them whilst laying flat on some 3/4" ply over the week and be ready to install next weekend.

Installed some pegbard and a ghetto security system. I am just playing around with ideas until I get all the painting done on my car and Lambretta then I am going to do a garage remodel along with cabinets, etc.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Spent a few hours moving stuff around. Bit like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, but rearranging does help.

Don't really have any more room than I did, but it isn't such a jumbled mess.

The best part was that with most of the stuff in the driveway, I had a glimpse of what it could be like when/if I do get it cleaned up.

Pulled the battery on my daughter's Honda to see if it will take a charge. Strangest thing....when I tried to start it the dashboard gauges all went wierd fluttering and everything. Probably needs a new battery and an exorcism.

Apart from being in and out to grab tools now and then nothing. I've spent the day stripping wallpaper around the areas that the plasterer will be replastering following our rewire throughout the house, then we've moved stuff in every rooms so he has access and frankly I'm ****** knackered after a hard day in the garden yesterday planting fruit trees. I foresee some beer and a hot bath in my future.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Nothing in the garage for me as well.

Played around with some photos from the garage. Debating on making a "build" thread for my rejuvenation of the garage. Not sure if I should now or wait since it won't get going until spring.

Uploaded some photos of the wood burner that I want rid of too. I'll make a thread in the classified section. Would be great for someone to use in the garage. I'd use it, but I want something to quickly turn on, knock the cold out of the garage, and turn back off just to do some quick work on the cars in the winter when needed. Don't want to be bothered with building a fire and cutting wood for it since I'm not in the garage very long in the winter.

Went back to my childhood a little in the kitchen instead. Kids are bored on the weekends with the crappy winter weather. Cold, sloppy, and no snow for fun. Wifey brought home a box and sand for our youngest, she loves sand and loves her Hot Wheels cars.

Made some roads for her to run the cars around on. Took me back to the childhood when one kid in the neighborhood had a fantastic sandbox, something like 8' x 16' and we would make roads and buildings all through it for the diecast cars. This is a little smaller in scale than I had when I was a kid....

The red and white trucks are the exact trucks I played in the sandbox way back in the early 80's. I found them in a box in the garage a few months ago and gave them to my daughter to play with. Those 2 trucks were my favorite of all the thousands of Hot Wheels and Matchbox I had. I should keep the red Bronco for myself. It's 30 years old and there's not a scratch on it. Loved the rubber tires back then.

Cleaned the Mass Airflow Sensor in the Taurus as well as inflating the tires to the recommended pressure. Hoping it will help a bit with my recent poor gas mileage. Also bought some Gearwrench Tamper-Proof Torx Sockets.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Replaced the capacitor on a blower motor for a large inflatable xmas decoration. Now I can put it in the garage attic until next year. Wife will be very happy when she realizes she's not tripping over it.

Put a ladder away in the newly reorganized space.

Washed 3 vehicles.

Washed the (outgrown)baby potty, and booster chair. Two more things that can be put away or gotten rid of.

Soldered the connection for a VHF antenna I've had laying around. I've got a scanner that I got in an auction lot, and I'll probably pair it with that.

Found a touch screen and added it to my garage pc. (Amazing what a reorg will turn up.) Now I just need to get it on the network, and I'll have tunes in the garage...

All in all, a pretty productive weekend.

Laid 1/2 the VCT floor yesterday. Today, moved all the other stuff onto the 'done' side so that I could do the last 1/2 this week.

My knees hurt.

I had that exact same red truck with the number 21 on it. If I remember right, it had real rubber tires on it.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

So ...I go over to a buddies house to drop off some really nice anti-fatigue mats [bought out of a walmart closedown auction] for him to use at work and he has four new deepcells [he repairs golfcarts for a living] eight months old, owner wants to upgrade batteries...he gives me two of them, two other glasmats we use in our underwater scooters and I show him my new Yost 34c which is still in the back of the Avalanche. I pull out of his driveway, tailgate falls open, I lose one of the scooter batteries [I found out later] and somewhere in the mile we're apart I lose the new-ish deep cell, and the Yost is hanging in there. I get home, find the debacle, he finds the little battery in his yard and we never did find the deepcell. BOTH projects now ruined because I needed two of each battery, I cannot 'free up' the two Optimas in the boat and I am too pissed.

I did manage to get the 165lb Yost out of the back of the truck and up on my bench. It's nice to know I can still CARRY stuff that heavy, but I sure couldn't have got it off the ground. Waiste height to about 8 inches above the waiste.

So...I will soon reposess the HF truck crane I gave the nephew, the one that I installed the last of the wireless HF winches I had so I can insure that my old *** can get stuff off the floor and on to the bench.

Odd day, not bad, just damn odd.
I still have tooling and mill ends scattered to high heaven inside the garage. STILL sorting that CL find....

Turd tailgate.

That ***** when good goes to bad!

Started stripping the pile of old VW beetle transaxles and link pin beams I bought on Friday. Didnt get very far, the transaxles are still full of oil (despite being told they had been drained) and I dont know where my spanner for draining them is. So...I went back to the tidying up in the shed. Pulled an old cupboard of the wall that was rotting and discovered a window I didnt know was there.. Seriously, been in this house a year now and have never been down that side of the shed..

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Friday night I helped a guy in our Jeep club weld an axle truss on his 2012 Rubicon front axle. Worked out great, he pulled the axle and just brought the axle to the shop. I hate welding those things on while the axle is still under the Jeep.

Saturday, I helped my son replace the water pump in his 2004 Wrangler Unlimited.

Yesterday I only stepped foot in the shop to get the old wheels from my son's Jeep in which we sold and the guy showed up to get them.

I just saw someone else do this to another JK this weekend! Must be a popular upgrade.
