I got inspired to clean it off today. Not too bad. Even found the key for it. Threw my grandmother's old Hoover in the pic too.

Our office will be remodeling and will have quite a few of these old industrial desks (50's or 60's vintage). One could likely get a VERY good deal if interested. Located in Decatur, IL. PM me if interested.

Desk is no longer available

If anyone in the area is interested, I'm looking to get rid of this one quickly for short $. (need the space)

I'd rather see it go to a GJ member

Just disassembled (45minutes). Have all hardware

Tanker desks make great lathe stands also...

I wish I could find the slide our side pieces that mine is missing.

i had a nice vintage set like you're showing, bull. -- mine was battleship grey
but i moved and it wasn't worth hauling 400 miles.
i don't regret it, it was appealing to the eye, but it was a lot of lost space for what i do at a desk... and sometimes it would be a catch-all.

Awesome thread. Just found it tonight while looking up All-Steel info. Here's my contribution. Just picked it up a couple of hours ago. It's a 1965ish All-Steel model 6255 Tanker Table. It's in great shape, but I'm going to paint it Hammered Silver to make it a bit more vintage looking (to me, anyway). It'll eventually hold my Shopmaster J20 scroll saw and old Craftsman 9-inch lathe.

Wicked cool, I didn't even know there was a 'tanker table' like that, going to have to keep an eye out. Nice! :rocker:

Almost forgot to update this thread since posting my desk photos a few pages back (see them here).

Check it out, recently scored a matching chair to go with the desk! :willy_nil

Does it get any better than this?

Well, only if you consider it was free, too.

I am resurrecting this in case anyone who wants one, or more, and is in hauling distance of Springfield, IL.

The state is getting rid of a bunch of them!
Lots of shelving, carts, and other HD stuff too.

For some reason the current auction is big.
Over 40 pages.
Get a cup and have fun browsing.

Kenwc,

Let me know what the dimensions are for your missing work tables (I am not sure if they are standard). There is a place near me where I saw several sitting in a pile. They looked to have some rust and were grey in color but certainly usable.

Figured I'd pop into this thread again and share some pics of the massive 78" All Steel Equipment credenza that my father stumbled on. What a beast! It puts my desk to shame, that's for sure. :eyecrazy:

And yes, it is up for sale, although I haven't put it in the classifieds here since I didn't really think it fit. if anyone wants it and can cover the freight, PM me and I'll see what I can do.

In any event, here's the pics, what a monster.

I have coveted one of these desks for a long time and they used to come up for sale all the time but I have been looking for a couple years now with no luck. But...the other day we were hauling some culvert with the equipment trailer for a road project on the farm when the wife saw a sign that said "Free Desk". I turned around to check it out thinking it would be one of those particle board Walmart specials and ended up with this:

xlggg4.jpg

No dents, the drawers all work smooth and it has the draftsman top. This thing is heavy and weighs about 150 pounds and I have no idea of its age. It has brass feet and a brass trim ring around the base of the top.

2qv46jd.jpg

It was used by a concrete contractor and the white stuff on the top is concrete dust and I need to still clean that but inside the desk I found a small weather radio, a couple of slide rule concrete calculators, and a slump indicator gauge (I have no idea what that is but it looks cool).

68u1xv.jpg

I still need to polish the brass and clean the linoleum top but I sanded it, hit it with Rustoleum rust converter primer and then painted it flat olive drab from some camo paint I had left over from a John Boat project. By the way, the green shelves in this picture was an old book case I rescued from the scrap heap that had been in a barracks at Fort Ord California.

20zr0us.jpg

I still need to look this up and find out the approx age.

A little while back I picked up this Allsteel single pedestal off CL that apparently came out of a local university. The seller worked for a moving company and was able to save a couple that were still in good condition.

My wife found this one for my home office a few months back. It was several shades of rattle can grey and the top was covered with some type of crusty adhesive. I had to strip it and give it a good coat of classic red to match my old desk lamp. The formica top cleaned up way better than I expected and even kept the cool off white color as you can see in the indoor pics.

Looks nice, love the color! I recently snagged a very similar desk light, should go great with my desk and the chair I got not long ago.

Cool desk lamp! I have one just like yours in my son's room. I thought it was cool and "retro" looking so I snagged it for $4 at a local antique shop.

I was trying my hand at pin-striping and laid some lines on the lamp. I thought it came out kinda crappy but my son likes it so I left it alone.

Hey,

Read through the thread and there are some very cool tankers here. I just picked up a All-Steel desk off of CL yesterday. I really like the look of the refinished desks and I may refinish it someday, but it looks pretty good the way it came.

Looks cool with the original paint I think, I wouldn't re-paint it.

Picked up a pair of vintage Cosco propeller style office/lab chairs.

Adjustable height. One shows some signs of use and age, the other is near perfect!

Over here....
Wow, nice thread!

Several years ago I snagged an office desk from work, pulled the drawers off and re-purposed them under my work bench.

They have no handles screwed or bolted on. The handles are aesthetically molded as part of the drawer itself. They are plastic molding and the rest of the setup is all steel.

I've been searching for years to find more to add. I see no mfr name on them. Anybody recognize them?

I had found one on a craigslist ad a couple weeks ago for $45 bucks. Someone selling a bunch of stuff to settle an estate. Was the first caller and the lady assured me I could have it but they were going away for a couple days and she would call me when they returned. 3 days go by & no call so I called her back and she told me her husband had sold it to someone else. WTF... So the search continues.

I love these desks, but they have gotten very expensive!
I have a steel desk with a drawer that won't close all the way. I opened the drawer, dropped what I was doing to put in it, bent down to pick it up, and put too much weight on the open drawer. I heard a pop, and now the drawer stays open a 1/4 of an inch and the front is out of true, anyone have any advice on repairing my mistake?

Have you had the drawer out to check for what got bent?

Haha, yeah you meet some colorful people on CL. Most of the time, I find that they're as skeptical of you, as you are of them.

I have 2 in my shop, I plan to add 12" to make them shop desk height. one will get a thick steel top for welding the other may get a butcher block or be left alone until it gets beat to death then a stainless top.

I have not taken it apart yet, just looked up the sides and in the back with a flashlight. I wanted some advice to go on before removing the drawer.
And on that note, any advice on removing the drawer itself? I saw no obvious catches.

Interesting. I sit here posting this on my old slow worn out PC while it sits on this enormous metal desk with a 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 foot top. Love it. I'm thinking of moving it out to the garage after I get it all cleaned up and organized (the garage) when the weather breaks.
