Beaut-i-ful! May I ask how high is stone down to the ground? (3 1/2'?) This is very similar theme for my new garage.

Thanks for all of your pictures in here.

I love the look of your garage. The Euro garage doors are beautiful.
And the final look is very Canadian-a . Well done.

SMHO,

Beautiful work!
I'm building a cedar deck and am trying to decide on what finish I want to put on it. The color/appearance of your garage doors is exactly what I'm after. I assume that's Sikkens' Cetol SRD or their log & siding product. What color did you go with?

The Sikkens is Cetol log and siding. the color is natural oak. The darker stuff is simply rough cut cedar, while the lighter color is on planed cedar. I was really surprised what a difference there was in color on the two textures.

That is a truly a gourgious building by a patient craftsman. Beautiful outside. What toys lurk beneath those cedar doors? Great job!

shmo, that is a beautiful place. I love the garage doors and the fake dowels...and pretty much everything else.

FAKE DOWELS?.......I like the refer to them as "Crafstman inspired faux timber pins"

Bumped so I can show the pics to a friend. I'm getting the dreaded red x on all of them. Is it just me?

I'm aware that all of the pictures are down. I tried to put pictures back where they belong, but I know some of them are out of sequence.

THANKYOU SHMO! I love the architectural details that you have put into your home. My wife and I are nearing the time when we can build a place of our own to be the "last" house and I find your work very tasteful.

I hope you don't mind if I copy and save the pics for personal use/inspiration when we do finally get to that point. The house you have built is ideal for both of our "empty nester" dreams.

I have one other quick question. Are these plans available commercially or are they custom?

Shmo, thanks for bringing the pictures back up! Once again, you did a superb job on the exterior 'look' of your property. I'll bet the neighborhood guys hate you because their wives are saying "The heck with the 'Jones', we have to keep up with the Shmo family"! lol

Hey, what's been happening inside the garage? Inquiring minds want to know!

By all means, you are welcome to save any pics you consider worth saving. In regards the the plans, they were custom.

Well....it's that time of year, with Halloween right around the corner. Here are a couple projects and setup of our Garage Halloween party.

Here is a quick shot showing how the garage currently looks when nothing is parked in it.

Gosh, I'll bet with a little more effort you could have one heck of a fabulous Halloween display! lol

You obviously don't do things 'half-way', do you? You really enjoy traumatizing the little 'trick-or-treaters', don'cha?

I get more of a kick out of making things. I am completely intrigued with Halloween props, decorations and how things can be put together.....But on the other hand, I would love to do a haunted house some day and scare the S.H.I.T out of all the neighborhood kids....haha

Awesome set-up, shmo. Halloween is a fun holiday to be creative and have fun.

A couple years ago, our pool refinishers left a big dead spot of grass in the middle of our front yard. I dug a big hole there, put caution tape around and threw in a few old skeletal remains (cow bones), a chewed up shoe and ripped clothes. It was the talk of the neighborhood.

Have fun at the party and be sure to post a few shots of the party festivities in action.

I haven't done much to the garage, but I did start a home theater project. I figured it was time to watch some movies, so I hung my HD projector from the ceiling, did a 135" DIY screen, put my A/V receiver, blue ray and cable box in one of the cabinets, used my old tower speakers and a sub for a 3.1 system, rearranged the furniture and walla!.....I have a great excuse to be very lazy! :rocker:

Here are a few pics

The "wall"
https://sphotos-a.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/299723_10151282467287190_1259687591_n.jpg

I stacked some milk crates up and aimed the projector to find the size and layout I liked. Blue painters tape to define the screen edges.

What you cannot see here is the 3 days worth of drywall prep to make the wall absolutely perfectly flat and smooth. I applied N-8 gray screen paint. the gray tone helps with black values and makes a huge difference for viewing in ambient light. I plan on watching a bunch of Games and Fights out here too. Don't want any of my drinking buddies falling down in a completely dark room :drink:

A little wall paint to darken the room and decrease screen reflection.

Test run!....I used the flash on my camera phone so the picture is really washed out.

I am very happy with the picture quality. I would use this DIY screen solution again in a heartbeat! I would compare it to screens I have seen costing upwards of $1,000....I did mine for under a hundred bucks.....super happy with it.

NICE (INEXPENSIVE) HOME THEATER!

WAIT! WHAT??? Is this your GARAGE??? How the heck are you going to get any work done in there? If it were me, I'd just turn into a couch potato; too much temptation to just kick back and zone out on a couch watching reruns of 'Gilligans Island'! LOL

Wow, that is such a lovely looking house and garage.
I wish I had had such an eye to visualize something like this before building.

hahaha. But, I LOVE Gilligans Island! Actually, I have a shop nearby that I do most of my dirty work. I would post pictures of that, but it would literally make you cringe. :dunno:

Amazing images......!

What make/model projector is that? It's an Epson 705HD. I originally bought it to do outside movies on a portable screen 20' x 10'. I needed the really bright lumens this projector puts out for that. However, on eco mode with this gray tone (N-8) screen, the image quality is quite striking. I am super happy with it.

Thank you. I think my family thinks that all I do is visualize...haha

Amazing job you have done, i can't believe you were reluctant to add it here based on its worthiness.
Thank you very much for the compliment. I guess it doesn't seem as worthy to me because I look at it every day. I am happy with the way it turned out though. next time it will be a little bigger and a little more complex in the design, I think

I am not one for "home decorating", so am looking for some input on these cabinets. Any suggestions on how to finish them off. I am also looking for input on counter material. Again, this is kind of a poser garage. If anything, it is more of a play space or extension of the house. Any input is greatly appreciated.

SHMO

This is kind of the start of the theme.

I had missed this before, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading the whole thread today. You really captured the spirit of the Arts and Crafts school in your design, and the execution from simplicity, to architectural detail, use of local materials, choice of stone, and even paint color all work together beautifully. Speaking of paint color, you might be interested in checking out the houses on Cascadilla Park in Ithaca, NY, which is an Arts and Crafts development from 1909. One of them is almost exactly the color you chose. I lived in another- really love that era. http://www.thepolisblog.org/2010/01/cascadilla-park.html

SHMO, I'll put my home decor hat on and give it a shot. Looking at the color palette you've chosen for the walls, stairway, screen trim, and even the color of the speaker enclosures, I'd opt for simplicity and paint the cabinets in the same hue/texture as the stairway and screen trim. I'd even paint the refrigerator (and the breaker panel behind) the same hue as the cabinets; perhaps in a different sheen if you can find appliance paint in the same color as the cabinets. I would also carry on the same color/sheen of the refrigerator and breaker panel onto the garage door track and all its hardware to lose the 'shiny metal' finish. I think it would enhance the look of your natural finish garage doors' interior as well. I would find a source for a custom black fabric (Sunbrella - http://www.sunbrella.com/) roll-up curtains for your window above the counter. It would be a 'blackout curtain' mounted inside the window opening in front of the existing blinds; the curtains would enhance daytime viewing and the black would 'flow' with the cabinet color.

Are you planning on a finished floor? If so, I'd choose an industrial grade hardness ceramic tile in the largest format your floor's 'flatness' can handle. As for color of the tile, I'd try to select one that matches (as close as possible) the color of the screen wall color with matching base cove moulding so that the floor appears to flow right into the wall, making the space seem much deeper from the driveway. A matte finished tile would give better traction and be one less surface to reflect screen images.

As for furniture, since your home's exterior is such a fine example of the 'Arts & Crafts Movement', I'd choose a nice collection of Morris style furniture. Stuff that is stout and yet comfy, and can handle being slid back against the wall when 'movie time' is over and the space becomes a garage again. Throw in some period floor lamps, a small cottage made area rug, some afghan throws and you've got yourself a 'family rest-nest' in your garage!

I am now removing my 'interior decorator' hat - WHEW! :supergay:

P.S. - I forgot about your request for a counter idea. I'd go for a custom poured-in-place concrete slab with the bull-nose and back-splash built into the form. This stuff is colored all through so no worries about scratches. Color is just about whatever you choose from the jobber, but again, I'd go for black or maybe even color match the ceramic tile color you choose.
