Just picked up a new Wilton today. It's nothing old and unique, but I wasn't seeing anything on craigslist and needed one stat. Picked this Wilton 11106 up for ~$116 shipped.

I finished up my 3.5" Yost from a few weeks ago. It still needs some work on the slide, (its got a hard spot in the handle when you turn it) but should be easy to run down and fix with a file and some lube.

Sorry for not including the citrus trees, Craig. I can assure you this is an authentic Bigcaddy vise picture. I just had to take the picture in the official vise hauler instead.

Do any members on here have a 3"+ Wilton with the dust cap missing? I just figured out the perfect replacement for it.

It takes a bit of fitting but check out the finished product. This one is being installed on a 4.5" swivel jaw i got on the 1st of April.

Here is that same cap after being painted. Its profile is about as close as you can get to the original, and considering that you can't find original dust caps, is the best possible fit/finish around.

If anybody is interested in knowing what i used, ill take a picture of the packaging and post it in a while

Nice cap! What did you use BigCaddy?

I don't know if every auto parts store carries them but this was the exact brand i used.

The dust cap is for a Ford with a hub that measures 1 31/32" ID

I just ground off the crimped "lip" that would rest against the hub and filed it to fit. That shortened it by about a 1/4" after the portion above the crimp came off after grinding.

The cap will have a flat bottom but it can be rounded out with a drift and hammer. I took a small section of 1 1/4" pipe in the vise, rested the dust cap on the top, and whacked the inside with a brass drift. It rounded it out almost perftcly on the first try but i'm sure it could be done better.

The cap was also stamped China and had a logo that was easily filed off once the profile was domed out.

Just checked the internet for the brand Dorman. Amazon has these dust cap in stock for 6.00 plus shipping. They were 4.50 at the auto parts store near me

Hey I know about 300 pages back there was a consensus that media blasting was acceptable and quick way to get to bare metal (maybe to rough for a Bugatti vise), but I never saw what you guys are blasting with. I have Black Diamond slag I used for truck parts, and a bucket of #80 glass beads I haven't tried yet, what should I use for a vise? Is anyone using soda blasting?

I used black diamond 20/40 to blast my friends Craftsman, it leaves a definite blasted look. Don't blast anything you want polished, use a wire wheel for that.

Scarfed a Reed 404 recently. During disassembly I could not remove the Static Jaw Nut. Yes,..I removed the pin. However, I can still not remove it. Yes I whacked pretty good with a large pin and hammer but it will not budge.
Any suggestions? I have never encountered this on any vise before. I will not use too much force as I can work around that issue if I have to.

Lots of penetrating oil, bigger drift and bigger hammer. There could be a buildup of crud behind the nut thats keeping it wedged in place when you hit it.

I've had to scrape that area clean before i could even start hitting on a really dirty vise.

Just don't get too wild though. The hex shaped nuts on Reeds are forged so you will never break that but the if the dovetail it fits in breaks, you have a very expensive boat anchor.

Good luck.

Personally I hate the blasted patina, so something that DOESN'T do that. This is exactly why I like E tank baths. It simply removes the rust (and the paint 98% of the time) and you can polish anything you want to easily.

How do you feel about using a brass wire wheel? It does leave a golden hue though on the bare iron.

No I mean Barrett. I have a near mint Starrett #326 combination that swivels, weighs 215lbs and their is a nice Starrett on E-bay right now, metal workers vise. But I'm talking about a Barrett. Saw one on Craigs last year, weighed 265lbs., but was a stationary or I would have went for it. And the one on Craigs a month and a half ago, I called about it. Stationary. I want to know if they even made a swivel.

Looks like they did make a swivel base vise.

Note: Page scanned by Google.

Yep, that's the one I was talking about. They had it on Craigslist first, then they tried to sell it on E-bay, pick-up only. It didn't sell. If it had of been a swivel I would own it now. I tried to think of a way to put a swivel action under it. Nothing. Even the stationaries rarely pop up.

Picked this baby up today for $20 at an estate sale. Did not even know it was going on until I drove past on my way to the liquor store search out some Kentucky Breakfast Stout. Near perfect condition. A Morgan-Chicago #140. Virtually all the original blue paint is still there. Jaws are pretty good condition. Only very minor surface rust on the non painted areas. Weighs 54 pounds. The guy watching the garage was "educating" me on how such a vice new is like $75 (yeah, from China) which is why he would not go below $20. Guy made me go to the bank to get $5. It even still had most of the original white on the raised letters but my dumb *** whipped it off when I cleaned it. My best score in a while.

Got the ******* apart today lots of lube (acetone/****** fluid) Man there was 1/2 a fields worth of dirt inside and getting those 2 frozen swivel lock clamps out was a ***** but today after how many years the beastie swiveled!!
I`m going to take it to my mates machine shop and have him put in the hot solvent engine block washing machine then into the lead shot tumbler.
I've already filled the teeth marks off the swivel clamps and i`m going to have to figure out sizing of the original handles to make new ones.
So looks like the jaws are held in by pins? i`d like to remove them before the parts go into the shot machine.
And what color was this originally

I just finished fabricating some replacement swivel lock handles today myself for my Morgan 160. I bought some 4130 chromoly from onlinemetals. The larger diameter end stops were center drilled on a lathe with about 0.004" interference. Then cut 4 pieces off and hammered them onto the ends of the handles. Nice snug fit.

Been looking for a good used vice for the last month with no luck. My neighbor is moving out so I went to chat with him yesterday and asked if he'd sell me one of the vices on the bench in his garage. He said no but I can have both. Unfortunately they don't swivel but you can't beat free. I know nothing about old vices and what's considered good. One says Athol and one says Hollands

That Athol is a really well built, stout vise that will give you a very long life in the garage. Not only are they heavy, the metal seems really dense on Athols, making them nearly indestructable. I bet you thought it was a bit heavy for its size. It has a rather unusual profile that i've never seen before so i'm guessing its on the older side of whats usually seen.

The Hollands is another really good vise. A number 14 will have 4" jaws with a stationary base, a number 24 has 4" jaws with a swivel base. If you hang on to them, sooner or later you will find that swivel based vise you are looking for and can upgrade.

Personally, i don't think they really are important. Most of my vises have swivel bases but i have yet to loosen the lockdowns and every use that feature

That would be a double dose of Usuck...

So yes, you scored pretty big there!

Opening day for one of Chicago suburbs outside flee markets, this little Monarch followed me home. Not sure whether to restore or leave it in its current patina? The seller also had anvil-vise that needed some work, a guy bought it right after me, maybe it will surface up here..
