Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Finally won the battle to get the cabinets installed-had to machine them down to do so:eyecrazy:
Got some trim installed and started on the skirting.

Then it all went pear shaped-broke the cover on the fuse board and having decided to put trim around the fuse board, selected a piece that seemed to be different to the others I had been using & just kept shattering instead of cutting smoothly:willy_nil

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

First post in this thread.
Pulled half the stuff from the garage, out into the driveway. Sorted some things. Moved woodworking stuff toward the back end, so it will go to the future woodworking shop.

Took everything off the 7'x20" bench top and put a piece of hardboard on it for a wear surface and put everything back on it (6 tool bags, 3 vises and 2 SO wall cabinets).

Pulled a wood wardrobe out of the van that has been riding around with us for months. Pulled a file cabinet, shop vac, dolly and metal shelving out of the garage and put in the van, to go out to the hangar.

Stuffed everything else back into the garage except another dolly, which I put in the living room. Going to repeat this performance and use it to remove an old C'man roller and a vise and table top and put those in the van for move to hangar. May also remove a couple wood dressers and take them to the hangar too.Just thought of another thing. Will take the bench top drill press and a table mounted grinder out there too.

Aim is to clear and simplify. Garage will be only automotive and metalworking. Looking at Dubbers single for cues. Want simple but usable.

The grunge garage will be the great little garage.

Getting the buggy ready for the big VW show in Fredericksburg. Replaced an axle boot. Adjusted and bled the brakes. Tonight install a new speedo cable and adjust the valves.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

My wife is out of town, so I was up till midnight last night cleaning and prepping the garage floor for epoxy paint. I did the single car garage bay over the weekend and decided to finish off the other two bays this week. It took me two times with the fast prep, cleaner/degreaser/etcher to get the floor ready and no less than 10 tubes of self leveling sealer for the cracks (after using a linoleum knife to clean 4 years with of **** out of them). I hope to prime and paint at least half of it tonight (hopefully all of it). I'll post pics when it is done.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Over the weekend my son and I both installed our soft tops on our Jeeps for the season.

Last night my son brought home his brand new 2012 Harley Davidson Street Bob and so we had to stand around and admire it and come up with a modification game plan.

Tonight I am going to fabricate a cart to store his LJ hard top on. My JKU hard top is held up to the ceiling in the garage but I think I am going to help him build a cart to store his on. This way when he gets a place of his own down the road he has something nice to store his hardtop and doors on for the summer seasons.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Got the trim installed round the fuse board, fitted one of the base cabinet units in place & joined it to the next one. Also got a couple more pieces of base trim installed.
Not much to report as it was the wife's birthday so I could only get this done when she was collecting our youngest from school.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Had a scraping noise when I would go around any left hand turn. Could have been from all of the mud I got into....

So I took my passenger rear wheel and brakes off and cleaned all the mud out of it. Can't believe how much mud was in there...actually yes I can

Pulled the 900 out from under wraps. Been spring long enough. Got a list of things to do. Like, the belts are 13 years old, just for starters.

Beautiful looking parts CudaChick.

I started on the cart for my son's LJ hardtop storage. I was able to get most of the parts cut and mocked together last night. Tonight I need to drill the holes for the casters and weld it together then paint it.

Hopefully tomorrow night I can glue the carpeting to it and Friday night put the top on it and get it indoors out of the weather.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

New guy here, figure I could add to this thread. Today I cut the 22ga. for the top cover of my DP stand. Oiled it well, here rust is a non issue with a little lube, and popped holes in it to bolt the DP to the 8x8x1/2 piece of support plate in the top of the stand. I've got 3 more drawers from McMaster to bolt in and sides out of 22ga also.

This is my first real welding project. Couple of weekends in and I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Finished my Tire Pressure Monitoring System for my GS.

Broke down the wheels and tires and added the new sensors. They double as valve stems.

I like that you get instant pressure and temps of each tire.

With all that in front of your face how ever do you find time to watch out for the distracted left turners. I think you could squeeze a radio in there somewhere if you wanted.

Walked around the garage and looked at what I have to do and walked back to the house, called it a day!

Some days it is just not in me to do anything....anyone have those days?

There is more on a typical car dash. You just need to learn to look when the ride is clear. 250K miles and never a crash, knock on wood!

By the way, you should see what an Iron **** rider has:

Just like in a car, with radios, cruise control, AC controls, and instruments, you learn to use them safely.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Shrine that is one wicked lookin piece of wood. What is it??

It's the plague of the Texas Hill country....Cedar. I cut it down about 7 years ago. It was good and dry and my bride wanted a new fireplace w/ a new mantel. In my mind = no problem! Reality = a massive, 120+ lbs, remodel! Originally the log was about 30 feet. Had to cut it down to get it out of the canyon.

Stripped it and cut it down some more....still too much to handle.

Brought it to sawmill to shape it.

Built and mounted the brackets and checked weight balance.

Reinforced existing wall and prehung it....yeah, she loved this in her living room for 2 days!!

I sanded for a week and now in to 4 coats of 10 of final treatment.

The grunge garage will be the great little garage.

Continuing on this line of work, I took half of the stuff out of the garage again. Pulled out the small old C'man 2 piece roller and top chest and emptied it. That made room to push the camel-back drill press back against the wall. On the other side, I pulled out the 1/3HP C'man block grinder on the metal table. I also pulled out the C'man bench from a scroll saw and put all these things in the van with the spare hand truck, metal shelving, file cabinet and shop vac.
This made some needed space in the garage. Arranged everything on the left side of the garage and swept up. Now half the things in the garage are accessible. Took all the things in the van, out to the airport and set them up for use there. Put together 2 sets of HD plastic shelving out there.

Tonight I brought home the old 17" Delta drill press that I got for free. Ask me how I got it into an E350 van by hand without help or machinery...

It's the first project for the garage. It's a low speed model and needs some work, a plug and cleanup.
Photos at 11 (Of the garage. I forgot to photo the hangar).

Changed the oil and filter on my Expedition. Tightened the wire on the starter as long as I was under there.

Was much easier than I thought, other than disposing of the old oil. 46 y.o. and this is my first DIY oil change. I guess we all have to start sometime :)

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

dbonne-- welcome! Lots of good stuff to find on here. Search the forums for just about any topic. Prepare to spend money on things you never knew were important, and to save a ton of money by getting the straight dope first!

To help prevent the itch when working with fiberglas, coat all exposed skin with a heavy application of talcum powder. It will fill the pores and keep most of the ichy-ness from happening. Baby powder works great (but does have a fragrance.)

BTW, this is one of the friendliest and most helpful sites on the web, but read the forum rules. No discussion of politics or religion. It's because of the rules that it is such a nice place. The moderators do a great job.

Again, welcome!

Tried to take up some of the wood floor to see what died under there. :( I'm going to have to take out a huge chunk of it.
