New Craftsman Chest, Broken Logo, What to Do???

I ordered this 5 drawer Craftsman chest the other day and picked it up at the store.

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00962026000P

I unpacked it at home, and all seems well. BUT there's no "Craftsman" logo at the top right of the front of the chest!

I rummaged around the box, and found that it had broken off and was sitting at the bottom of the box. Since there was no damage to the box and I was careful in transporting it, I conclude that the damage had to have happened during the loading of the chest into the box.

Does anyone know if/where I can get a replacement plastic "Craftsman" tag - I'm concerned that this little piece of plastic will hurt my chances if I ever try to sell the chest. Should I just glue the logo back on?

I'm also thinking that maybe I should/could make a custom logo to attach in its stead and keep the broken-off logo to glue back on if I wanted to try to sell the chest.

Go to the store, ask for a manager and have them order you a new logo through the parts dept. if you don't want to go through the hassle of returning/ordering a whole new box. The parts online is here:http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action?sid=PSHx20080114x00001
Type in your model # (top right hand drawer/white sticker will have it on there) and search for you craftsman badge; might want to print it out and take the info/old badge/receipt with you and they should order it and have it shipped to your house...
You might be able to do this over the phone if you want to save $$ on gas, YMMV! :)

I think resell value would not be the biggest concern with a homeowner grade cman box. Perhaps pick one of your favorite auto manufactures emblem to glue in place of the cman one or just glue the original one back on. I suspect you could also have the box exchanged if it is worth your time to do so.

I would have just glued it back on. In the time you took to write your post asking what to do you could have had it glued on already. :)

Thanks billymade! I found the part # on the literature that came inside one of the drawers. I sent an email to the parts dept explaining the situation. I really don't want to lug a 75 lb chest down 3 flights of stairs, into the car and back to the store, so I'll just hope that they send me the nameplate.

Maybe I'll just give them a call.

Diesel, well, selling it off isn't my primary concern. But similarly, say I wanted to give it to a friend or colleague, that little piece of plastic could make a difference. As for me, I really couldn't care about what it says as long as it gets the job done. But then again, it looks a bit out of place with two holes where the name should be.

*shrug*

It's not really worth my time or effort to return the chest given that everything else appears to be okay. At most I'll call them up. For now, an email is the most effort that I could muster.

Actually, it's not really self-fixable. The nameplate is fed through two clips on the inside of the case. There are two deformed rubber grommets on the outside, the plastic nameplate pins are sticking out a bit, and so the nameplate would stick out awkwardly if glued.
That's a ball-bearing box... so it's not Homeowner series.
Technically since it is not one of Craftsman's professional series boxes, it is still a consumer grade chest despite not being a "homeowner" box.

Well, I decided to make a phone call to remedy things. It only took 19 minutes! (grr) I'm glad that I'm still a good multitasker, and at least the people I spoke to were pleasant.

I called the parts number listed on the exploded view parts list. The first person sounded like he wasn't from this country and I could barely understand him. He forwarded me to a nice lady who took her time but was able to get everything in order, until she asked for a store receipt number. She was aware I ordered it online but somehow I didn't have the right number she needed to put the order through. My order #, email confirmation salecheck # and "RC #" weren't enough. So she forwarded me to Sears.com customer service, who very quickly helped get everything in order, or at least I hope it's in order.

Oh wells, it's the price I pay for being an obsessive kind of person.

Call SEARS and get another -- on little things like this, they come through. If it were mine, I'd just use some silicone adhesive and glue it back on.

Yee gods, I'm thinking like the fellows across the pond. That was my first ideal as well.
Be fun watching the posers pontificate about how Snap only made that model for a couple of months in the dark of the moon.

We're not "across the pond", you are.

(that's British humour, like the first post I made on this thread, just thought I'd mention it, while I had this keyboard thingy in front of me)

Thanks, but don't worry about it - replacements are (supposedly) on the way.

Something else that I wanted to mention - Sears Parts dept tried selling me a fire extinguisher. It was more along the lines of "we're running a special today..."

I was at Sears today looking at the boxes. I have not bought a box in about 20 years. Lots of changes, and colors. Saw that the stainless steel versions were made in China - makes me sad.

I saw 3 display boxes with missing plastic nameplates - the mounting pins had broken off. On a 4th one of the two pins was broken.

Went home and looked at my 5 boxes. 2 of them are so old the nameplate is metal and riveted on. One of the others, with a plastic nameplate, has a broken pin.

Might be fun to see if I can get a replacemet.

I went back today with my camera.

I said in my original post that there were 4. Then today I saw a 5th box that looked like it never had the holes drilled for a logo - that is the second picture.

Sorry for the last pic, which is blurry.

I once took pictures at the local Costco food court of the hot dog sign to prove Costco switched brands, and 2 goons came up to me and said I could not take pictures inside Costco.

So when I am in a store taking pictures I do them as fast as I can and sometimes the camera cannot focus fast enough.

Maybe someone steals the Craftsman logos and put them on Snap-On boxes so the customers will not think they are paying too much....

It's all ****. Garbage.

When the brand falls off or wears off, what proof is there for warranty?

It's a calculated deception, I'm telling you!

I received the new nametag in the mail today. And the two "clips". There aren't any grommets though - that was probably a third part number *rolls eyes*. Well, at least they came through!

I always try to take photos inside stores as discretely as possible. BUT, a colleague of mind sent me a "photographer's rights" type of document, and basically it says that one is free to take photos in a store and that the worst the store can do is ask you to stop and if you don't they can ask you to leave.

A lot of times, some stores will send out spies to other stores to compare in-store promotions and prices. That could probably be a basis for no-photo policies.

I need to get one of those plastic Craftsman logos, or I will not be able to sleep.

Go search on the net for pictures of the inside of a Costco taken by a customer. Then try to find pictures of their food court, taken by customer. There are maybe 2 pictures in the world. I did not know that when I took my camera to Costco.

I happen to like to review food places, of all kinds. My local Costco had Hebrew National hot dogs in the old days, and they were good. Then they switched to the Mount Sinai brand. A person I know said Costco was still using Hebrew, and I said there had been a switch.

So the bet was on. Camera in hand.

I took pictures during the wait while my secretary and I were in line, to prove there had been a switch in brands. This was not a cell phone camera, but a real digital camera with a flash. I took pictures while we were standing in line.

The goons came over and said I could not take pictures inside the store because it was a "private" club, and not open to the public. Problem with that is that is that I pay them money each year to belong to their club.

Once the goons left me alone, I ordered the pizza, for what that is worth. My secretary had the hot dog. Costco did switch hot dog brands.

To bring this back to the subject. I guess there is none.

Unfortunatley, those Craftsman badges falling off is a common problem; they are light weight plastic, break easily and are not secured well either. In the old days, these badges would have been made of metal and pop riveted to the chest or roll cab, oh well!

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!

I've seen tons and tons of Craftsman boxes missing logos from any era, I also see lots of SO boxes missing logos as well. Its a pretty common thing and unless you like bragging or break toolboxes with reckless abandon then it shouldn't matter.

I have not received a Craftsman box that was not damaged in some way, in the last few years. I had one like yours with the logo broken off, I had stickers that said Crafsman, about the same size as the emblem I put on it. Craftsman products have faltered in recent years, to the point where I really don't buy much from them anymore.:(
