Finished up grinding the welds on the flagpole, next is prime and paint, pulled some chairs to the bay door and sat with the family and watched the grandkids play. My dad stopped by and hung out with us. I have found that is some of the most fun, just hanging out with the family in the shop.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

well, started my 2 week vacation today (sort of - I have a call with my boss at 5). So I started by looking at the gas powered trimmer that would not start. Amazing what an ounce of seafoam and some carb cleaner accomplished. Darn thing runs!

I dropped an ounce of Seafoam into the lawn mower too - that'll get a workout as soon as my wife wakes up :)

I finished adding pegboard to the workbench on the left. This gives me 24 sqft of pegboard and 10 linear ft of workbench top.

My wife helped me hang some tools. I think pegboard appeals to her OCD a place for everything and everything in it's place nature.

I hope I don't have to hang some pegboard in her sewing room.

Began sorting through all the **** that is covering my garage right now into piles organized by project type. The slow beginning to a slow process of re-organizing/re-claiming my garage.

Changed the oil in the wife's Explorer and rotated the tires. I also found that both rear ABS exciter rings are broken. I guess that's the reason for the ABS light to be on.

Slept in mine last night! Central AC went out Monday evening. Tuesday night wasnt too bad, but by last night the heat and humidity in the house was above where I could tolerate it. The rest of the family said no way, but with the window AC in the garage and an air mattress, I was happy and cool. Watched a little TV and then to bed.

Thanks for clarifying that for us Clive!

Thicknesser.
Like an overhead planer.

Thicknesser.gif

Used to be just called a drum sander, but people realized that they could be set up accurately to give a final thickness along with a good finish, and then sold as such, so the name gradually came into use and then stuck.

I like the simplicity of this one.

Cheers. I like simple!

Cut a 2x12 and routered the edges for a shelf for the wife's nursing school books. Cleaned up the huge mess from the router. I need a separate wood shop someday.

Trued the wheel on my Kona Smoke 2-9 bike. Now I can get back to my fuel-free commute after taking a pretty good spill to avoid hitting a car.

A drum sander is still a drum sander.

A thicknesser has blades same as a planer but is overhead
and can actually reduce the timber to a specified thickness.

Fabbed a frame for a short rolling stool to use at work, now I just need to find a seat. Oh and drank a few cold ones with the step-oldman while discussing the admirable qualities of the old GMC Syclone. Decided to build our own from my S10 Zr2 :3gears:

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

It was lawnmower day yesterday. I pulled the deck on my Cub CUT and of of momma's JD, cleaned them both out and sharpened the blades. I don't even know how mine was cutting the edges were so rounded off. And From the last time I mowed, the deck was jammed packed full of old grass. The JD wasn't as bad, but then again, it only mows about a fourth of what I do. This afternoon is mow day to get it done for the weekend. I have to help the neighbors son change out the fuel pump in his Silverado today

I would think by now, there would be a product that would keep grass from sticking underneath a deck. I am going to strip it down when mowing season is over, get it blasted, and get it powder coated. I've also given it a thought about shooting the underneath with Imron seeing that Imron is hard as hell. I've tried POR15, well it is the equivalent to POR15 called Chassis Saver and it didn't last long at all.

Well here in 'Murica, a planer is what you guys call a thicknesser. A jointer, is what you guys call a planer. Planer = reducing thickness of a board. Jointer = flattening a face of a board. Confused much? Just another thing we do different for no reason, like not using the metric system.

On topic, I got the keys to my new house and started moving in yesterday.

A buddy of mine takes cooking spray [Pam] and sprays his deck before he cuts wet grass. Haven't tried it myself but I believe it would work. My deck is powdercoated and it's starting to have places where the rocks and grass have cut through it. I've been tempted to have it Line X'ed.

Finished up the recover of the seats on my 73 bronco, and installed some new 3 pt seat belts. Save around 500.00 by doing the recover myself, but my fingers and hands are killing me.

I bought a new 33" Craftsman Wide Cut Mower this year and it had a hose connection on the deck for cleaning out the underside of the deck after each mowing. My sister bought a Cub Cadet lawn tractor and it had the same connection. It is available separately and I'm going to buy one and install it on my 22" mower. Many of the smaller walk behind mowers also come with these connections now. See link below for Craftsman Tractor Deck Wash Kit #33167.

At first I was concerned about spraying water on spindle bearings while they are hot but it is really no different from cutting wet grass or mowing in the rain, which I am known to do from time to time.

What did I do in my garage today? I assembled a new Craftsman #9-59732 utility cart that I purchased with SYWR points. I also did a bit of straightening up and put away some tools that I purchased a few days ago. Then I staged a mower repair job that I need to do tomorrow morning.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Mixed wiper fluid from Gunk concentrate I got from Grainger a year ago. Then as it overflowed, I found the gallon I previously put in our Jeep was just enough and I shouldn't have bothered.

Did LR drum brake on a GM SUV for a relative due wheel cylinder. Doing the RR tomorrow morning. I nearly forgot just how fun it is to remember where all the springs go. :)

Replaced the hood latch on my car. It's kind of nice to have a $10 Taiwan part look exactly like the original. And now it opens and closes like a new car does!

Tore down a TR6060 core. The 1-2 and 3-4 sliders are different and I'm not sure I recall which was which. The rest of the box looks great. Now to pick out parts to make a slip-yoke version.

Well that is a rumour better put to rest.
You no doubt found out that it WASN'T the equivalent after all.;)

What I normally do on occasion is that down in the neighbors pasture that I mow, there is a low spot and at times it will hold water if we had rain during the week. I'll pull down there and slowly lower the deck and it will wash some of the grass out but not all. I've gave it a thought about adding hose fittings, but I don't know if it would to any good.

As far as using PAM....been there, doesn't work.

Chassis Saver is the equivalent of POR15 but when mowing 7 acres, nothing last too long underneath the deck. Any fine dust, gravel, dirt, sand, that gets picked up out of the ground just takes off whatever is on there.

What I need is one of the new John Deere's that have deck that you drive on and drive off to connect and disconnect. The wifes JD isn't a problem as there are just two spring loaded hood, flip a lever to loosen the belt tension, and flip a lever in front, then slide the deck out.

My Cub is a different beast. I either have to use the bucket and raise the tractor up so I can scrape out the deck, or I have to get down on the ground four or five times and get back up to unlatch everything, then crawl underneath the back to release the PTO shaft going to the deck. And my Cub has a 6' belly mower. Getting down on the ground is no problem, but I can't lean on one arm to use my good arm, so I have to lay down and maneuver around to get things unhooked.

BTW.....if the grass happens to be packed underneath somewhat, and it gets wet and is still packed, you really don't want to park in a closed up garage overnight. It really adds a certain odor in there.

Anyone else confused?

Either spam or ******* :lol_hitti

Thank You gentlemen on the clarification of the Thickenesser

Real Humid here today which is unusual for So. Cal. so what do I do? Yardwork :dunno: Started with the palm trees that were waaaay overgrown, pulled the weeds around the palms, fixed a broken sprinkler in the same bed and then damn near died.

See, I'm a SoCal native and I dont do well with high heat w/humidity. I must have sweated a river. Started feeling kinda sick so headed to the garage for water, gatorade, a fan and the computer. Spent the next hour and a half on The Garage Journal (that damned website gets me every time). OK, rested up, time to continue with the lawn. Get out the 2 stroke edger/weed wacker and... wont fire up. Choke on, tries to fire after second pull (good) switch to #2, starts right up (better) turn off choke by moving to #3, idles ok, give it some gas... dies (****). Thinking I may have gotten some water in the gas, I dump it into a small container and find a small, about 1/4" piece of what looks like fuel line. Thinking that was clogging something , pour the gas back in and nothing, not even a fart. Pulled the spark plug and it looks oily w/ heavy gas smell. Now its really hot and humid and I've turned into a slug. To make a long story short, I put off the edger for Sunday along with the grass and cascaded 2 routers hoping it would increase a weak wifi signal in the garage (it did not), and started restoring a Craftsman motor and an old field worklight.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

As far as what I did in the garage yesterday.......

I was going to help the neighbor lady's son replace the fuel pump on his Silverado. His truck hasn't ran in almost three years, but he's moved to Georgia and came back up to try and get his truck running. His mom asked if I could help him. We ended up pulling it down to my garage as they don't have a hell of a lot of tools. First off, the truck is a '98 and contrary to what a lot of people tell you as far as car people and mechanics.....You do need the special tool to pop the fuel lines off.

So we got the bed off, or set back far enough. I had him turn on the key and no sound out of the pump. Then in looking, there was a connector pulled out but it made no difference. We get the old pump out, put the new pump in, hit the key and she fires and quits, so I figured there may be some air in the lines. We could keep it running by dribbling gas down the throttle body. It would run, but run a little rough. As soon as we quit dribbling gas, it would die.

He replaces the wires, the distributor cap, fuel filter, plugs, control module, and now the fuel pump. I asked him what happened when it quit running. He said it has a newer engine out of a Denali in it, he got home from New York, parked it, went to start it the next day and nothing.

He's had mechanics look at it and they couldn't figure it out although they did throw some of those new parts at it.

Thank God for the internet :rocker: I did a search on a 5.7 firing then quitting. There were some recalls although they were for Impalas, Malibu's, and Grand Prix's for the ignition switch. Long story short, somehow his truck jumped into the security mode. I happened to get in to start it and saw his security light flashing, asked him about it, and he said it's been doing that since he tried to get it running the last couple of days.

It takes roughly 30 minutes to get it OUT of the security mode, 10 minutes at a time. Turn the key to the on position for 10 minutes, then turn it off for 20 seconds, try to start it. If it doesn't start in ten, then you have to do it two more times just like that. You have to keep an eye on the Security light on the dash to see whether it is flashing or if it goes out. After thirty minutes, he reached in, hit the key, and she fired right off and purred like a kitten.

It's a pisser thought that he had to put all that money in it and maybe even for a fuel pump that he may not have needed. And the other thing is the mechanics he has taken it to could not figure it out and they were the ones that says he needs a fuel pump. :dunno:

Of all the Chevy's I've ever owned, I never heard of this. I guess it works as far as someone stealing your vehicle because it shuts off the fuel to the engine. And some of the articles I looked at was the cars with the transponder key which he doesn't have. And the other thing he doesn't know is how it got into the security mode in the first place.

Security mode was probably caused during the engine swap if the ECM from the donor truck was put into the recipient truck and not reprogrammed with the VIN of the next truck. The immobilizer module checks its stored VIN against the VIN in the ECM and if it doesn't match, it goes into immobilizer mode.

Once you go through the 30 minute security re-learn procedure with three on/off key cycles, the VIN will be updated and you won't have that problem any more. Since you did that, you should be all set.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Update: Thinking about this again, the only problem is that the ECM VIN that gets updated will be from the donor truck, not the actual truck that you are driving. This is not uncommon when people do engine and ECM swaps. Just tell the neighbor to keep in mind that his ECM VIN might not match his truck VIN. He should keep the receipt for his rebuilt engine with his truck title in case he ever needs to prove ownership.

Built a parts/hardware divider for a drawer of my tool box today, the drawer is 7 3/4" deep so i built two organizers and stacked them to fill the drawer entirely but unfortunately i made the tolerances of the box to tight so its a pain to get them into the drawer.

I did some needed general cleaning. Over the past few days I've changed the oil and air filter in both our cars, changed the alternator in the ******, and repaired the drivers side headlight by replacing the pigtail in the PT Cruiser. I need to put in some shelving next. it will help to get the stuff off of the floor.

Cleaned up some tools I picked up in a old box of stuff at a moving sale. I threw out about half of the junk (stamped wrenches, staples, **** screw drivers) and saved the good stuff.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

During my shift break this week I went 'Hell for leather' on my latest creation.
I have been meaning to get started on this for some time now. My daughter wanted a Cigar box guitar and I was not willing to pay the money that a local guy wanted for the ones he makes.........so......I decided to build one myself.
To do this I needed to be able to thickness some wood down to 3mm (1/8") for the box part. To do this right down to this degree was not practical on my dads thicknesser because it would probably just shatter it into a million pieces. To do it properly first I would need to thickness on a conventional bladed thicknesser and then run it through a drum sander thicknesser.......problem was I didn't have access to one of them.................solution............I need to make one of them too.

Long story short......this is the drumsanding thicknesser that I made this week.

I need to glue the Velcro onto the drum and some paper and sort the wiring and it will be all done.

I have included some pix of the guitar and the carry case.

Today I glued the sandpaper on to the velcro and gave the machine a run on a stick of wood. Operation successfull!!! We have a winner!! It worked as per the plan. All I have left to do is get my sparky to sort out a switch and we are done.
Right.......what was next on the list!!!???

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

The wife and I put up a 8w x 12.5d Lifetime Vinyl shed yesterday. 85 degrees in the direct sun for just under 8 hours total, not including break for lunch. I am very pleased with its trussed roof design and think it should hold up better than a steel shed of theirs I had years ago which collapsed at the first 12" snow storm. Also, this new roof has a steeper pitch than the old steel one which will help as well.

Unfortunately, it is sticking out of the ground a good ways and a ramp will probably run into my lawn a bit... the wife won't be happy. Had no choice as one corner was to the top of a piece of ledge in the ground so it was either put it there or move it about 2 feet closer to the lawn.

Here's a picture.

Nice looking shed! I have a similar one, though only 8X10.
