Wait a minute I am totally confused :lol_hitti

Are we saying the Columbian is only worth $70 new or the Altrade.

I would certainly pay $79 for one as long as was not an import but then I don't need one. If it is in good shape and a US vise I don't see a problem with it (Columbian) at $79.

Am I missing something here :dunno:

Here's a neat little vise. 15 lbs., 2 1/2" jaws.

The lock down handle and the front face are solid brass.

As you can see in the last picture, the dynamic jaw raises up and slides out to the desired opening or the width of the object to be clamped. The actual carriage of the jaw is 3/4'' down to nearly nothing which is adjusted by bolt under the nose cone up front. Just enough distance to snug up against an object.

I saw a Velox vise on Ebay maybe a month or two back. Other than the Ebay listing and the patent I couldn't find any other mention of the vise. Thanks for posting the pictures. This is the patent in case your interested.

Thanks fellows. I don't know why the pictures are so big, I sized them down to 400, every one.

Thanks Neophyte, for the information. I couldn't find anything on it, and sure didn't know that Mr. Fulton was responsible for it. I've printed that info for future reference.
My hat is off to all the historians of the Journal. I really don't know how you all find this stuff. But keep it up.

I finally got the battery charger for my electrolysis tank. It is a rather larger battery charger but I was told by Outlaw it will never die on me lol. I talked the lady down to $60 after the last couple of weeks so I had to jump on it. Plus, it is a Schumacher and I am fairly certain it is a good brand. Now it is time to get this monster vise going and finished up.

I managed to get the snapped off screw out of my 1750 today by welding a nut to it. Only took me six tries. That still leaves me with trying to figure out how to deal with the static jaw that's been redrilled to 5/16 (factory was 1/4). I was able to drill the old jaw really easily, so I think I'll be able to open up the hole in the replacement jaws,, but I can't put a flat step in it like the factory did for the head of the screw. Do they sell screws with reduced heads? I didn't see anything at my local hardware store, but maybe a specialty place would have something would work? Closest thing there was a 5/16" cap screw.

Just turn it down on your lathe:lol: I had to make a similar screw, with a reduced head diameter, and since i was away from my shop and lathes aren't exactly portable, i used a low tech home made lathe.

Chuck the screw you need resized into your corded drill. Clamp that in your vise and lock the trigger on. Use the appropriate file and resize the head until it fits.

I use the short head cap screws when I make Starrett and Prentiss jaws, the 1/4:20 has a head thickness of 1/8 and the 5/16 cap screw head thickness is 5/32. You will still need to drill and counter bore the 1/4 screw pockets to accept the 5/16 cap screws. Send me a PM maybe I can help.

Kevin

Sorry Big Caddy, was looking up Heli Coil tap drill sizes while you was posting. Heli coil would work only if you drilled deeper then the 5/15 threads. The best fix would be using threaded inserts, http://www.acmeindustrial.com/pdfs/ACME_Threaded_Inserts.pdf, cheap and the out side threads are standard English threads.

The big one got away but I managed to land three smaller ones.

Wilton Cadet - Rock Island 3" - Prentiss 181 3 1/2"

The BIG ONE was a 6" Charles Parker that was bolted to a big welding bench in an old bus barn but the owner didn't want to separate them yet. He is having a sale this weekend he wanted too much money for the vise as the dynamic Jaw had been cracked and brazed heavily. If he doesn't sell the table w/vise he may consider selling the vise to me.

I apologize for no pictures of the big one, I got vise fever and ran out the door leaving my cell phone/camera at home when I saw it on CL.
(stupid newbies :lol_hitti)

So I suppose you could say I practiced good hunting etiquette by leaving some breeding stock out there.

Really cool that the Prentiss has all its original parts and the ears on the wing nut aren't broken. I think Kevin Scott at WiltonViceParts may be able to take care of the missing pipe jaw and that will be a nice little vise cleaned up.

Good Hunting! Wes

I wanted to start a new thread but apparently I am too dumb to locate how to do it, dang! I did not want to hijack this one but I am tired of searching for how to start a new thread, sorry. I just bought a National Vise B3. It opens about an inch due to the jaws themselves sliding. Under the sliding jaw on one side is slot and the other side has a hole thru it. It looks like a screw may go in there. The bottom of the slide portion has machine cut notches with a screw at the end. I put a screw driver thru the hole to try and open the jaws but it would not move but the same distance. Any ideas how to get the jaws free. It is not really rusty just looks like something is missing or stuck. I did note that under the slide the notch bar does not appear to go thru the fixed jaw, not sure if it is missing or normal. It is heavy and for $15 figured I could not go wrong, well maybe if the vice does not open. Any help greatly appreciated.

Just measuring up the side profile of a Chas Parker 8" jaws tonight, I have my own 6" Parker to measure tomorrow, so go buy that 6" and I will have a pair of jaws made soon. Building 4 different sizes. These are going to be expensive, verrrry time consuming.

I like the Cadet, great job Wes.

I happen to find in my backyard a vise left by the previous owners.

It's a Columbian Red Arrow No 64. I can not find anything about the company, or the vise.

I know it has little to no value based upon (it's pretty beat up) what I see here but I mostly want to know how old it might be and/or if it is at all rare(if it's possible for a vise) based upon there be no info on it anywhere.

When you open the General Tool Discussion forum the first page showing the latest threads has a blue box on the upper left that says "Start a new thread"

Just click on that and away you go.

I will post pics as soon as I can get some. (next day or so) I know that is best but I am frustrated that I cannot find anything on a "national" vise at all.

Here is a 3 1/2 inch jaw I believe yours is a 4" . You need to post pictures but these were home shop vises probably from the 50's . A search on this thread will show some red arrows that have been restored. No one has even started a bid of $19 on this one.

A 450S is a nice sized vise...

Big enough to do most jobs, small enough to fit on most folks workbenches...

Your "refresh/rebuild/restoration" is top shelf...

Beautiful Restoration. Terrific job. To me the 450 S is the closest thing to the perfect vise for size, meat on the bone, and the Wilton quality of course.

Post pics! we like em!

Not particularly rare, I bought a No. 63 a year or so ago, and didn't really look close and discovered after I got home it was broken as an earlier brazing job had not held up.

I wound up re-welding it as a documented project just to demo how you can go about it.

This is what I was told about time lines:

The Columbian Red Arrow vises are listed in 1938, 1941 and 1956 catalogs, but not in a 1932 catalog...

I finished restoring my Simplex C43 this morning. I like the satin green I picked out. Not sure if I want to do white lettering or not. I will give it a couple of days to see if it needs it. Now I have to wait for my next project because there are no vises in Wichita. What do you guys feel is a fair price to sell this for? I don't have a need for a vise right now and I certainly just enjoy restoring. Anyway, pictures.

PURDY I like

I haven't parted with any of mine yet so I can't comment too much on selling price, but if you deliver I would gladly pay $100 on Tuesday for a vise today

Thanks for the purdy comment. I would have liked to have kept all of the ones I restored but I don't have the room for them. I like this one and the Wilton I had restored the most.

On eBay... You could probably get around $150 - $200... Of course you would have to subtract out eBay & PayPal fees...

Nothing special but maybe worth a post. Just a little, 3 1/2" Dunlap that was in need of a freshen up.

Hello Vise Friends,

I picked this little Columbian 03 1/2 from a fellow GJer in Owensville, In. earlier today. I forgot his GJ handle but it was a pleasure to talk tools with him.

Does anyone know how old this vise is?

Thanks in advance.
