Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Busy day today.

Picked these 2 up yesterday. Lots of work needed

Lots of wet sanding and then masked the letters and threw some paint at it. Then cleared the whole thing with satin clear coat.

Lot less work but a pretty nice bench also

"Did some more misc. cleaning/purging, feels GOOD to throw junk away!"

Ain't that the truth!

Saw a couple of these benches at the Sonoma County Fair. They had truck doors on the side and a tailgate between. The doors were from the 50's and had advertising signs and a nice rusty patina.

Is that pine? I've wanted to do a benchtop that way for a long time, but didn't want to spend the $$ for hardwood. Looks good so far!

Red Oak. Got it for $1.50/boardfoot from someone on craigslist. I'll have about $150 in wood in the bench, and another $90-120 in hardware when I'm all finished.

Cleaning, dusting, rearranging and general organisation, seems like it never ends.

Cleaned up and organized a little. Continued to plan shelves I want to build on the wall before I had to go to work. Now grabbing a bite to eat and catching up on mlb highlights out here. Nice and quiet with the family all asleep.

How do you plan on surfacing it after? (not the finish, the flat surfacing).

Took down the camp out area the boys had in the loft and moved some cutlass doors and bumpers up there. Stuff has been in the way too long on the floor, I don't want to junk it but it is major in the way. General cleanup time while I have some help since the boys are done with summer camp work and FFA stuff.

Rebuilt a 25 year old Black and Decker cordless screwdriver and a 20+ year old craftsman drill for my 9 year old son to have to add to his 'real' tool set. New rechargable batteries, lube in the planetaries. They run like new. I try to involve the kids any repair projects. Growing up on a farm, I loved working in the shop with dad and my brothers.

Nestor - That's a good use of the space between the doors.

Thanks. You can't see it, but the reason I elevated it was so I could store my metal bandsaw underneath. The wheels on the saw don't swivel so it's a pain to move around.

Took down a nuisance flouresent light and replaced it with a normal light bulb. Built a shelf dedicated to my 1 inch drive socket set that I inherited last night. Neatened up and took stuff to recylcing center. Gave shop dog a leg of lamb bone.

After finishing the kids beds this week, started building my daughters stage so she can sing in her room. Nothing like the satisfaction you get from building something for your kids that they enjoy this much.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

i wasnt actually in the garage today, due to the old lady's latest "project", (painting our new front entry door, and storm door), but outside in the driveway.

took a really good look at the vintage PLVMB toolbox i picked up a couple weeks ago.

the rust is a little worse than i first noticed, bottom edges are pitted pretty bad
took a lot of the outside down to bare metal, and shot some primer on it..

the box definitely wont be a showpiece, it will be a "working" box, probaly will get a coat of semi-gloss black to hid some of the pitting.

really havent decided yet :dunno:

Cut some blocks to go behind siding mounting blocks and then drilled one out for the new service conduit.

Checked out a problem with my clutch on the 911. All of sudden last week it got really hard to depress. Trying to eliminate things before I have to open it up.

Got the recumbent seat in place. Looks like it might be about an inch too far back for the wife (the project is for her) but I won't know until I get the pedals on. Guess I'll have to figure something out for that.

Oh, and I also attempted to replace the front hub assembly in my 2005 VW Passat 4 Motion 1.8T and found out the one AutoZone sent me was wrong (not for ABS) and they don't even have the alternate.

Removed a remote starter system from a buddy's leased 2011 Nissan Rogue. Took about 3 1/2 hours, but apparently I take more pride in my work then the professional installer did. Not a single wire was soldered, and some of the wires were clipped entirely too close to the connectors.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Got started on my soninlaws 85 F150 got plugs in and new fuel lines cut and ready, new carb put on. Tomorrow pull the bed off and get the fuel tanks out and flushed. I don't know what they put in it but the old carb had about an 1/2 inch of sandy looking grit in the bottom of it. Finish the wires and cap and rotor wed and try to get it started. Cleaned up the shop a lot more and identified more stuff to haul to the dump.

Worked on a Powdersmoke with a burned valve cover gasket/harness. Looks like someone recently put an injector in this, coincidentally(or maybe not) on the same cylinder as the burned harness.

I cut up some oak kindling for the winter, found a surplus crate (12 ft long) and loaded it up.

Painted the garage door, then found a few more spots on the Bridgeport needing paint, and kicked a bit of grass. Slowly but surely got a few things done on a lazy Sunday...

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Needed to clean up some space in the garage as I don't think I was utilizing space very well....wasn't sure what I should do and I found this site. Got some ideas with building a bench type unit and putting the tool boxes in it...so i went at it.

This was my first time working with wood. I went and bought a compound miter saw (cheap 10" ryobi...did the job perfectly fine)...first time using a compound miter saw. I wanted to put each tool cabinet on each side...but...I measured once and the right side wouldn't fit. I was about 1/2 inch too small. I guess it worked out ok.

FJLzIMa.jpg

I used more 2x4s because I didn't have any mode of transportation where I could bring home a large sheet.

Ugh...Kinda made a mess...

Anyhow...I guess it turned out OK. If you guys have any recommendations, I'd love to hear it. I want to build another one where everything is perfect fitting...but wood wasn't straight when I got it from Lowes. :dunno:

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Did a little gunsmithing today. A few months back I completely FUBAR'ed a re-checkering job on my 1920's Browning Auto-5 16 gauge shotgun, mainly because I didn't know what I was doing. Now that i'm getting the hang of how to work through mistakes I went back to work on the shotgun. I actually had to completely sand away ALL checkering on the stock and start from scratch, a task far harder than re-cutting already existing checkering. I got that done yesterday and today I finished the walnut with Solar-Lux dye for color and Tru-Oil for a protective finish. Here are the results.

Browning_Auto5_Refinished_zps4765fb41.jpg~original

A couple months ago I completely stopped using stain on furniture and firearm refinishing and switched to alcohol based dyes and can't believe the difference in clarity, warmth, etc. I'll never buy stain again. :)

My second project was on the grips for my S&W Model 66-2 .357 magnum. I damaged the stock grips badly a couple years ago (lost footing on a rock scree. saved my rifle... sacrificed my body and the revolver in my holster) and finally got around to buying some Hogue Bolivian Rosewood grips. When they arrived I was not happy with the plain wax finish they came with, nor did I like the palm-swell bulges on each side.

They started out like this:

hogupic80300.jpg

After sanding down the sides, reshaping the finger grooves for my hands this was the progress photo:

IMG_0432_zps27bd8fe9.jpg

And since I don't want the revolver being slippery like a bar of soap, I checkered both sides @ 18 lines per inch, followed by dying them with Solar-Lux American Walnut, and adding a coat of tru-oil. They will need about 6 coats of the tru-oil to finish the job.

here the grips are drying.

Edit: FYI, that's just shine from the lights on a wet surface. They're going to be Satin once finished.
