You guys did well, why can't I find stuff like that!? I did pass on some sockets and wrenches that were by themselves. What do you do with the non matching sockets and lost wrenches?

SNIP

Good finds Jere,

And the answer to the above is for quality tools, keep collecting until you have a full set, and/or trade/sell then to someone that is trying to do the same...

I've finally got to where I have a complete double set of Proto Combo wrenches that will replace the Craftsman RP's I've been using all my adult life and more when I get to that part of my reorg of the garage/tool boxes.

I'm still working on the set of 30's-40;'s "long C" Craftsman tools I want to make up.

Hey, it's better habit than drinking and smoking, and costs less...

Found a Cman 25/32 - 13/16 combo wrench, and a flatblade 41584 Cman screwdriver.

Sifted through the junk pile at a sale and found some parts with a casting number MOWOG. Researched those later and discovered they are a Morris/Austin Mini bellhousing and clutch cover. Going to pick those up tomorrow.

I picked up an unusual Ball Peen hammer today from a Sale. The woman of the home was running the sale and 99% of the stuff was hers. Her husband put out home cleaned up hammer heads for cheap $$$.

I grabbed the 26 oz BP hammer head from the sale at it's proportions were different - and the price was right. It's only marked 26 and "P" on the top of the head. The sides of the head look more like a claw hammer than a BP and the BP end of it seems "stubby".

I picked up a handle at the local Mom and Pop hardware store. I was as careful as possible making it fit but was having issues with the head peeling back the hickory at it hit the curved portion of the handle. It's on there solidly and it will serve me well. I won't use a 26 oz BP hammer often - but I can use it when I need it.

Cheers

Jim

PS: Damn - just noticed it's marked 24 not 26 - oh well . . .

Love the leg lamp. I picked up an OTC 7249 ball joint tool. I didn't get a deal, I tried to get him down but he was firm I paid $50. I picked out some Snap-On tools form a pile. So my brother says would you throw in the Snap-On stuff with ball joint tool for the $50 and he says ok. The Snap-On 1/4 drive handle is a TM4CS.

That wobble extension looks like a specialty tool for older Mercedes (W124) water pumps. IIRC it is 13mm?

I was 15th in line for a 7am estate sale. It was wild in the garage with 8 guys tearing thru stuff. I grabbed what I could but I saw others that came up with some pretty cool stuff.

Here's my little haul for $20.

Giant new condition Snap-On OEX38.

Couple interesting hex pipe wrenches, one Rigid and the other from Germany.

Snap-On sparkplug socket and OEX16 wrench.

Rigid pipe cutter.

A really narrow steel brush which I think should be perfect for cleaning out brake dust crud in calipers.

An old Snap-On RX38 line wrench, 1961 date.

These were all the Proto Los Angeles line wrenches that I could grab. Some other guy got a couple.

The tool at the bottom looks like a home made nut driver. The little bits fit in the handle.

So, like I said yesterday, I grabbed a few things from the one sale... Guy told me he had more stuff to sort through. Went back over this morning, he didn't sort through much, but brought me into his barn to hunt. Holy ****! He's got two late-40's/early-50's Cman drill presses (one stand up, one bench), two vises (one newer columbian, one old old huge one that kinda looks like a bulldog), a 40's/50's Kennedy machinist box, a CMan Commercial Crown Top Grinder, and a bunch of other stuff every where. He even has a complete Vlchek DOE wrench set up on the wall above the work bench!

Between yesterday and today, grabbed this stuff for $20. Gave him my number, we'll see what else turns up within the next few weeks. Best part is, he's 5 minutes from my house!

The haul

CMan BE rat, SO extension, SK/Snappy Sockets

Bonney Stillson wrench, Cincinnati Clamp

Snappy 1/4" box

Contents of said box, all Snappy minus one Japan, One SK, and one....

WF Plomb! My first!

That ratchet is a TRUTH ratchet. Look at the big T to identify the maker. No idea what the BS means but Alloy Artifacts suggests it was a sub-contractors mark. TRUTH made the R6A ratchet sometime prior to 1950 when they were acquired by OTC. That is a cool damn find!

So my second stop was at an estate sale, and got the millermatic mig welder and a box of hand tools for 100.00 including the C02 tank, not sure what they sell for or what it is worth, but I can tell you it is heavy as can be, made my little truck squat and I used the bucket from my tractor to get it out of the back and it almost lifted the rear tires from the tractor off the ground...Rich...

Then went to the flea market, only thing I found I could use was a box-load of tools, I got the lot for $28. The box itself was crappy foreign junk, all beat up and will find a new home in the scrap metal bin at work. The majority of the tools in it, though, were US-made and a lot of it was older stuff, a lot of Husky socket tools, and some odds and ends I can use.

pic 1:
The box and contents, lotsa neat stuff to sort through.
pic 2:
VLCHEK chisel
a few Allen wrenches and an Allen driver set
a couple loose sockets (one is Craftsman)
two Master Quality wrenches (one is adjustable, one is slip-joint)
a few US-made screwdrivers
part of a Craftsman combination square
pic 3:
Husky USA tools, including a 1/2" ratchet, two extensions, 13 sockets and a set of Kusky vise-grips
pic 4:
13 wrenches and pliers of various sorts, from Craftsman, Westcraft, Channellock, Master Quality, Williams, and a few no-name US wrenches
pic 5:
The odds and ends, some foreign stuff on the bottom that will be tossed in a bucket for resale, some antique wrenches, a brass nesting screwdriver (missing all the other small parts) and there's the OTHER part of the Craftsman combination square from pic 2.

Last thing I saved was at a garage sale, saw this poor old film projector, looked military in history, didn't see any military data plate but the paint color is right, and there's a tag on top specifying lubrication with "Signal Corps" oil. Needs a little work, but I think it was worth the $10. I know a couple guys into old military accessories for their collection and vehicles that might be interested.

GREAT score on the Millermatic! Even if you have to invest a little in it to get it working 100%, it's a steal! As in, usuck.

That's why I seldom buy large lots or full boxes with few good pieces in the any more.

I'd suggest you take the tools you don't need/use and either bag them or if sockets, put them on rails and trade or sell for cheap to flea mkt. vendors to resell.
I see one vendor weekly that sneaks in an S-K or Indestro socket or two into a ziplock bag full of Asian sockets and tries to sell it for $5 a bag.
Some bite. Other's don't.

I see a lot of Taiwan no-name tools and sockets out there that I would hate to see go to the smelter but tool snobs pass them up.

A lot of users out there, if given Taiwan tools sold in a set or something more than "root and find" kind of method, tend to buy them.
Trust me. I see it weekly.

Hell, try and make sets for neice's, nephews, or drinking buddies. Most could care less of coo.

Scraping is wasterful if tool is usable and somewhat well made.

When I have to buy a crappy box to get some good tools, I save the box for when I have to buy crappy tools to get a good box. Toss the china tools in the cheap box and recover some cash. There are always home makers that will buy the china tools/boxes for simple home repairs/furniture assembly and make good use of them.

I've been "down and out" with a scratched cornea all week, so i've got the pirate look going strong, but little time else but for rest and limited computer time and "day-walker" time. :)

I hit an outskirts weekend flea today that does an "after church" Sunday sale.
Sure. :) Call it what ya want. I'm down.

Slaymaker Rustless art deco lock for jeffmoss26.
$1. Why not.

Dig for 30 minutes, throw it in a pile, and then haggle haul kinda day.
$10 or less than 75 cents a tool (really just a tad more than 50 cents a tool) out the door for what ya see. 18 pieces.

S-K and Indestro sockets.
Double box end Plvmb
S-K, S-K wayne, Bonney combos
5" Brink and Cotton C-clamp that needs some Evaporust lovin'
Baby KD USA pickle fork
Snap-On orange pocket HH screwdriver #SPP46B that was mixed in with a **** ton of HF orange junk. I just tossed it in the pile with no fuss.
USA 16oz ball peen that needs a new handle
Stanley USA wood chisel to add to the tow I have like it
KWB/SPi baby calipers. yellow nylon. Made in Switzerland.

More Craftsman NOS sealed in bags ratchet rebuild kits:
Kit for 1/2" drive 80's tri-wing ratchet. New but missing spiral ring. (opened)
Kit# 44575 1/2" dr
-----fits QR 43583
Kit # 44684 1/2" dr
-----fits 44978, 44973 flex, 44977, 44983 flex

edit---Ooops. Forgot to add soldering paste in there. Duh. :)

Last was a Litco 3.25" machinist vice for $6. Yep-6 bux.

Works great . Needs a new hold down slide lock and screw for the rotating base. Solid slide.
Looks like prev. owner shimed body bolt to not allow it to rotate as I am sure the price of replacing the necessary handle and bolt was too much $$$. :)

I'm sure the vice guru's will rescue me.

Litco / Littletown
Howe & Fory Co.
Littletown, PA
No. 112

$16 for the day didn't kill my budget.

OK my Sunday finds. I actually did better yesterday and the "pre-sales" but it is what it is. Only one "Deal" but again, it is what it is

Early I found a pair of "Long C" Craftsman Nippers. of the long c 30'3 40's Craftsman tools, only ratchets are more rare than any pliers type tools in my experience. Probably a result of the lifetime warranties... (This is my 6th pliers type tool in long C, and my first in nippers.) $7, and the only reason I went that high was the rarity.

attachment.php

Second score was this set: Kraeuter nips Crescent Dykes, SO driver, and an old Armstrong DOE $2 all

attachment.php

My last piece is a little 1-1/2" clamp on jewelers/Watchmakers vise. I found markings for "Patented June 16, 1885 H&B", so I'd guess this puppy is at least 100 years old! If not, dang close to it!

This is apparently the patent, by George A Colton, and dang this has elements that Yost and Wilton later used IMO! Unfortunately no assignment data, so no clue who the H&B refres to. :dunno:

I wish this sucker had the swiveling dynamic jaw! THAT would have been cool!

$12, again due to the coolness of the vise, and I'n sure they go for a lot more (Plus shipping) on "that auction site"

Scraping is wasteful if tool is usable and somewhat well made.

The toolbox was not well made, the latch doesn't close and there are rust hole in the bottom. I can bend the metal with my finger and thumb it's not very well made. Trust me, I save things that are useful. This isn't. It will serve society better by being recycled into rebar.

WOW, great stuff all. So much suckage going on in the past few pages. A blanket "You ****" goes out to all.

Yesterday I stopped by a few garage sales on the way home ~2:30pm. As usual lots of baby clothes and "that sold eariler today". Last stop had a big rubbermaid container full of random household junk. Nothing was marked price wise. I dug out the following contents and asked for a price. Lady said $1 for all  I dug out my wallet and her young son, who looked like he is going through chemo noticed my $2 bill. He seemed really intrigued by it, so I gave it to him and handed the lady a $1. She gave me back the $1 and was amazed that I let go of a $2 bill. :dunno: Our local bank has a bunch of them all you have to do is ask the teller. O well, they were happy, I was happy. Nothing real special or valuable but for $2

Some poor poor cman v wrenches that suffered a painful death of being chopped up.

Went to the Flea Market this AM and found nothing. On the way home we spot a Garage Sale sign on our street (It wasn't there when we left this AM).

We follow the signs and the sale is in the local Industrial complex - in Unit #19. We find Unit #19 and they have a lot of random stuff.

I turn the corner and see a Dazor 2 Tube Flourescent desk lamp. Beautiful shape for $25.00. I pay the guy - he was prepared to defend the price and was starting the pre-emptive "They sell for good money on Ebay" when the lady of the sale cut's him off "He knows what he has - he's ok with the price" which I was.

That brings my Dazor count up to 3 - 2 Flourescents and 1 light bulb model.

Pic #1 are the 2 Flourescent on my work table. The new one is in front - I need to find a home for it.

Pic #2 is the light bulb model - it's up by my work bench for directed light as needed.

Cheers

Jim

Jim, I need to find something like that for my youngest, who is about to land in a dorm for first year in College. Nice finds!

The toolbox was not well made, the latch doesn't close and there are rust hole in the bottom. I can bend the metal with my finger and thumb it's not very well made. Trust me, I save things that are useful. This isn't. It will serve society better by being recycled into rebar.

Fair enough. I was talking more tools than box.

I picked up a ****-load of glue guns and glue sticks for cheap a fw weeks back in an even shittier tool box painted pink. I'm guessin' a crafter that was female.

Works for that purpose but I would sure like what you have there better than what I got now. :)

I may step down to the Dollar Store clear shoebox mentality if necessary.

Never count out whatcha got and what is paid for.

BTDT.

:)

ZK, what do the brass tubes with the Tee/valve go to? those could be re-purposed...

Your guess would be better than mine sir . I thought and planed to use them as just long reach blow guns. They have a standard quick disconnect air line fitting on them. I have seen people use them for blowing out hard to reach areas (ex back of an engine bay). Or I could at least take the valves and quick disconnect off them for something else. If you want up close pics let me know. They have a few different markings on them. One end is ported like a safety blow gun would be.

BTW, what is that level you picked up graduated in? That was an awesome find for $1.

Here are a few pics. I think you are correct about it being re-purposed from something else. Any ideas what it originally was?

Maybe just set it out in your yard with a free sign on it? Free craigslist? :dunno: I just hate seeing things go to the trash that someone else could get some use out of.

Not much for tools today. No pics. I picked up more SJ cable, no plugs. Two pieces of 14/3 (32' & 53') and one piece of 12/3 at 20'. All for $12. **While my grandfather was getting a new hip (@ 91yo) I cut up one of his cords so he wouldn't burn the house down with it (it was crumbling in my hands). I'll now be able to sneak a duplicate into his garage to keep from getting yelled at. :D**

I also found a new (to me) motorcycle helmet for $3. Not that I need another one, but this one has the DOT stamp so I won't get written up for not having one with me (again).

Ok, stepping back in time to Friday, I hit an estate sale that said inside, outside, carport and entire work shop contents must go. I was in the first group inside, ran through the house looking for good stuff then hit the shed. There was nothing, I go back inside again only to find the cool glass jar and veterans plate for $4 and I'm out!

pic003.jpg

The night before I saw that the Snap On guy from the past few weeks advertising another sale with tools, 4 storages worth of things, yada yada.... I rush out there only to find a **** load of hydroponic growing supplies...damn....on the road back, I stop at a pawn shop and it's beard appreciation day apparently, all this for $10

Craftsman, Craftsman, Snap On, Proto below.

That was Friday's haul, not a lot but happy with what I got and time/gas spent.

Awesome.

I was told that Michigan offered the first veterans plates in the states in the 30s and they were denoted by 'Vv' as the prefix. I've got a few of them and I think they have to be for a WWI or Spanish American war.

Saturday got off to a bad start, nothing at the first few planned stops, then I got the four Crosby and two Campbell shackles for $2 ea. They are 6-1/2 ton 7/8" shackles, I could not get the $12 out my pocket fast enough.
pic005.jpg

Then I stepped a lil out of my comfort zone by crossing the river bridge into west Baton Rouge, the stop was actually closer than the Snap On guy to my shop but being across the river, it seems like it's almost in Texas.. :lol_hitti
Good thing I did, I scored my first set of 460 Channel Locks and all this for $7.50!!
pic006.jpg

Next stop was unplanned, not advertised. I inquired about the belt sander, young guy said $20, his mom(I think) said negotiable. I put it down while I looked around. Nothing good on the sale tables but I saw the nut/bolt bin in the garage. How much for it and the sander, I ask. Kid says, make an offer, I say $25, he says $30 and it's a deal. I hand him $40 and we carry it to the car. Walking back for the $10 change, I see a crate full of rust, how much I ask. $10 he says, I say, throw in the bag full of rust and it's a deal. We shake hands and away I go.

$30 bin, 3 drawers full of insulated electrical connectors, one drawer full of new screws and hardware. 3x21 Craftsman belt sander in great condition!!
pic007.jpg

$10 maybe I should have left there :lol_hitti

the best from that box and bag. Highlights are the wooden handle Craftsman ratcheting screwdriver made in Germany, New Britain BP hammer, Sheffield Steel blacksmith hammer made in England. There is also an aluminum square, Indestro ratchet, Sparta breaker, plane made in USA etc.

Last stop of the day was an estate sale, tools & antiques they say...I'm there. Turns out to be a nasty hoarder's two houses on one property. I needed a shower leaving that place.:puke:
There was a couple Craftsman power tools, nothing special and an antique B&D grinder on a home made stand, I passed on that but picked up these few tools for $10.

and a box of Melmac for $5
