I got an old 19 drawer 26" Craftsman stack a while back and have been trying to figure out the best way to organize it. More specifically, the sockets, ratchets, extensions, etc. How many drawers did you use for sockets, one for each size, combined drawers?

In my opinion, 26" boxes are very very difficult to organize tools in. They ALWAYS seem cluttered. Unfortunately, I dont have as many drawers as you do either. I have a 9 drawer Husky combo at home and I have tools everywhere. Been thinking a lot about how I want to organize it, but it never feels comfortable like my 78 at work.

I would appreciate to have a 'show your toolbox' thread as to the layout of the smaller boxes.

Not my box pictured, but same model.

Nine, that is probably the ultimate in a 26" wide box IMHO, lots of thin drawers. Only thing that could make it better is if the top was deeper than 12", but...

From someone that has only known a 26" stack untill this past weekend. :D
Actually my box is very similar in layout fashion.

Top compartment-Sockets, stand them on end. I don't ever move my box, so I don't worry about the domino effect shall we say. Socket trays are expensive and take up too much room IMHO. What is this "one socket size per drawer" nonsense. You are thinking like a man that has either too many sockets or too much room :lol_hitti Stop that. This is 26" friction box territory, where you are space AND weight limited per drawer.

Top box (lighter stuff)

-All sockets in the top compartment as mentioned above
-misc small items, punches, razor blades, cutting tools, drive accessories/extensions in the small drawers
-Nut drivers, bit drivers full length drawer
-Ratchets, breaker bars full length drawer
-Hex keys and hex bit sockets, full length drawer

Bottom box (heavy stuff)
-Misc junk, flashlight, pens, paper, rulers, general household stuff, safety items, glasses, gloves, ear plugs.
-Screwdrivers
-Pliers & adjustable wrenches (stored on edge)
-General wrenches (stored on edge)
-Large wrenches
-Odd wrenches, pipe wrenches, strap wrenches
-Hammers, clamps, pullers "rough tools"
-Air tools, impact wrench.

Note, pics are pretty old, additional pliers and wrenches have been added. Mostly thanks to members on here.

Just my 2¢ :dunno:

I also have a 19 drawer Craftsman, 5 bottom, 4 mid, and the same top as nine4gmc. I bought it earlier this month and have been restoring it. I have 7 drawers left to clean, sand straighten and paint. I probably won't take on a another project like this anytime soon. I have also been wondering how to organize this beast. I have been watching the show your tool box thread and it looks like some of you guys have some good ideas. Pictures would be awesome.

Mine is the HF 26" combo. The drawers .... well .... everything in it's pile, and every pile in it's place. Someday I may get around to organizing it, but until I finish building the shop, I'm still figuring out where it will all go.

the top box looks similar to the one i use in my service truck, except yours is in a lot better shape..

top compartment
3/8" & 1/2" dr sockets 1/4" -1 1/2"
crows feet, line sockets
torx bits, torx sockets, allen sockets
ratchet adapters, stud removers
top left drawer
misc special tools, valve core remover
quick release tools for hyd hoses
clamps for compressing piston seals
bottom left drawer
pliers
dykes, crimpers, strippers
420 channelocks, pair of needlenose
top middle drawer
3/8" dr ratchets
3/8" & 1/2" dr extensions
drive adapters
bottom mid drawer
punches & chisels
air hammer chisels & punches
top right
snap ring pliers
oring picks
bottom right
screwdrivers
nutdrivers
top full width drawer
2 sets std combo wrenches, 1/4" -1"
box end ratcheting wrenches,
saltus wrenches
double box end wrenches
2nd full width drawer
angle head wrenches 3/8" -1 5/8"
starter wrench, half moon wrench
bonney/armstrong service wrenches
special cut off, and stubby wrenches
3rd full width drawer
metric wrenches 7mm-32mm
MM angle heads
bottom drawer
adj wrenches, pipe wrench
small pullers & accesories
small prybars
longer screwdrivers
1/2" dr ratchets

with such a small box to work with, limited drawer sizes, pliers & screwdrivers (1 straight & 1 phillips) are bare minimum, same with pullers and many otehr tools that some consider "essential"

3/4" & 1/4" dr stuff is all stashed in other compartments, along with seal/bearing drivers, drills. taps, air tools, hammers, larger prybars, torque multiplier big *** channellocks, chain wrenches & long extensions.

yea ,i'm gonna have to do something soon. i bought that new in '99 or '00. i bounced around in the back of my truck for a while, spent some time as a pit box when we were racing, then ended up in my first service truck in '04, and in the current truck in '08
the bottom of the box is really beyond repair, the inner walls where the slides attach have been broken/sheared off.
gonna wait for my new service truck over the winter, and probably cut off the entire bottom of the box, remove the bottom drawer and weld up an angle iron frame, remove the lid of the box and set it on a 3 drawer mid box.

company changed body types, so the rest of my tool storage will have to change.
i may be able to cram an old KR558d into one of the compartments, but i wont really know until the truck arrives :dunno:

misc stuff: more pipe wrenches, drill bit sets, gloves, staple gun

I always wondered what the JeffMoss pliers drawer looked like. :lol_hitti Honestly I was expecting an entire box dedicated to Klein and Channellock. I'm a little bit disappointed Jeff.

The 1/2" HAVE to go in that drawer, it's the only one deep enough for the 1/2" deep sockets to stand in. I put the 3/4" in there too since there isn't a lot.

The biggest thing for me is multiple boxes around the garage. I keep the basics in my main box, and then specialty tools in other boxes. Here's some pics of my main box, I'm pretty happy with the setup the way it is now. Anyhow here's some pictures of most of the drawers.

1/2" Deeps in the top because they are too tall for any of the drawers

Took me an hour to arrange that drawer, they were all cluster fucked in a carry box and scattered around the shop. I can tell when one is missing and where it goes when I use one:willy_nil

Nothing in the top currently.

Here are some pics of mine. I only have sockets and wrenches in my 26" chest. It is only in the most commonly used sizes for quick and easy access. 3/8", and 1/2" drive only for sockets, and wrenches only up to 3/4 and 19mm for most of it. The rest is stored elsewhere because it isn't needed as often. All the pliers, screwdrivers, etc. are stored using alternate methods that I prefer over tool drawers.

I accidentally forgot to take a pic of one of the bottom drawers, but it is just filled with a full 1/2" drive SAE and metric impact set and full sets of 3/8" drive and 1/2" drive SAE and Metric 12pt sockets.

This chest is my garage only chest. I use portable socket cases and wrench rolls for any jobs outside the garage.

My box at work...where I am not a mechanic..is a 26" wide old CM. 2 drawer top, 3 drawer with flip up on the bottom. I paid a total of $45 for the pair (a matched set no less!) at 2 different yard sales. I know it is not as organized as many, but I can find just about everything without a problem.

Top and top drawer:
box1.jpg

Top is 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" drive ratchets, extensions, and sockets.

Top drawer is files, allen keys, drill bits, punches, air chuck and gauge, blow gun, pens, etc.

Bottom drawer, top box:

box2.jpg

hammers, prybars, 24" 3/8 drive extension, pocket saw, breaker bar

Top Drawer, Bottom Box:

box3.jpg

Screwdrivers, pliers

Second Drawer, Bottom Box:

box4.jpg

Wrenches. Left Side Metric - 8mm-27mm. Right Side SAE - 5/16-1 1/4

Bottom Drawer

box5.jpg

Air and Cordless Tools, Dollies, Hacksaw, Pipe Wrenches, Wrenches 30mm -36mm and > 1 1/4, clamps, slide hammer, wire brush, slag hammer.

Bottom compartment has wire rope tools, parts, sandpaper, and plastic and paper bags.

3/4" drive and pullers live in a wall cabinet, along with 1/2" and 3/4" impact guns. I have another small box with pressure tester, vac pump, cleeco's, rivet and glue guns, some taps and other layout stupp as well as mics.

Today I changed a clutch in this:

box6.jpg

Using the small box and the 3/4" stuff. Had to borrow a socket, but that was it.

And I'm NOT the mechanic. He is lucky enough to be on vacation this week.

Top drawer bottom box SAE wrenches
pic02777.jpg

Second drawer bottom box Metric wrenches
pic02784.jpg

Third drawer ratchets & kits
pic02846.jpg

Fourth drawer bottom box 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 sockets
pic02848.jpg

Fifth drawer I combined the pliers and adjustable wrenches

I'd have to keep a photo by the box of that drawer. If I took a bunch out I'd not remember how to get them all back in.

nine4gmc, you seem to have a good handle on it! One thing I find is you will have to reorganize a few things once you live with the set-up for awhile, sometimes what looks good isn't the most convenient.

Some general advice from my experiences (and preferences) Sockets on top using rails (racks take up too much room). Rats and socket accessories can go on top if there is room or in one of the mini drawers. The mini drawers are good for small items like knives, lighters, Loctite etc. If you have more than 3 of them ( I have a box with 9) they are good for screwdrivers. Other top box drawers can hold wrenches in SO style rails, pliers and vise-grips. The wrenches often have to go in the tallest drawer. In the higher up drawers of the bottom box I store hammers, prybars, punches and chiesels in one drawer, large wrenches and torque wrenches in another and another drawer for "painting stuff" like rollers, putty knives, scrapers, caulking gun etc. In the lower drawers I store air tools, power tools and anything I have in a case like tap set, power tools in cases, socket sets etc.

I have a poor man's 72" box lol which is three 26" boxes side by side, two of which have center boxes. I realize this isn't practical for a lot of commercial shops (a pita to mover around), but it works good for what I have. Most of the set-up I bought used. I probably have $700 invested in the boxes and all domestically made and are in good shape (no rusty or dented junk). I also have another light duty 26" I use for miscellaneous spare/ extra tools and another 26" box I put my racing stuff in. The top box for that one is a road box I take to track.

26" boxes are cheap used (especially if you aren't fussy like me with appearance) or on clearance so they can be good substitutes for shelving or cabinets. I'd be lying if I said I won't end up buying more. ;p

Thanks for looking guys!! I'm also looking for ways to organize more efficiently.

For 15 years old you got your **** together! My buddy has the same set-up. It seems ok for light-medium duty use. However unlike yours his was a pigpen, so much so that I took it upon myself to organize it.

I have a 26" Craftsman Professional from Sears Canada.

All the labeling says "Made in Canada", so I suspect it's an International Professional Series box with Sears "Professional/Qualité Pro" plastic badges fitted. Was a surprise present from my wife, so I got no say in the configuration. While they are good heavy duty units with the drawers having latches and bearing slides, and better quality wheels, if I'd been shopping for myself, I would have bought a wider cabinet of a similar grade.

Top box is 18 inches deep by 21 inches high with the usual top section and 5 drawers. The bottom cabinet is 18 deep and 30 inches high, also with 5 drawers.

Top box:
Top: Misc **** (plus other drawer overflow) Won't photograph that as it's pretty nasty looking at the moment.

Drawer 1 (2") - Screwdrivers

Drawer 2 (2") - Pliers/Side cutters/Vice Grips

Drawer 3 (2") - Wrenches, nut drivers

Drawer 4 (4") - loose 1/2" and 3/4" drive sockets and accessories, torque wrench, torque multiplier, boxed impact sockets, boxed hand impact driver, stud remover, and a couple of 2 foot breaker bars laid diagonally. There'll be a lot more loose sockets added to that drawer soon, as my 1/2" drive 6 point socket collection is quite lacking. Hopefully, I'll be able to come up with a good socket organization system. The torque wrench needs to be relaxed to 50 ft lbs to neatly fit across the drawer.

Drawer 5 (4") - boxed Stanley 1/4"+3/8"+1/2" drive socket and gear wrench set. With the side latches removed and the front latches left open, the tools in the box are accessible without removing the box from drawer - It's my grab and run "Go Kit", so tools are always returned to the box immediately after they've been used, and the side latches take just a few seconds to refit.

Bottom cabinet:
Drawer 1: (4") - Shaping tools (files, hacksaws, cold chisels, smaller hammers, wire brushes, etc)

Drawer 2: (4") - Automotive specialist tools (boxed wheel hub set, boxed compression tester, OBD reader, disc piston clamps, brake bleeding stuff, etc)

Drawer 3: (4") - Jointing tools (soldering irons, solder, fluxes, epoxies, plastic welding stuff)

Drawer 4: (4") - More joining tools (boxed tap and die set, loose taps and dies, nutsert kit, pop rivet stuff) plus boxed die grinder that won't fit into the air tool drawer.

Drawer 5: (6") - Air tools

Yes, the tools aren't organized in the individual drawers, as I'm in the process of doing a drawer reorganization in an attempt to get a more useful layout. The house we moved out of last year, had a lot of pegboard and shelf space. That luxury I don't have at the new place, so a lot of stuff was jammed into the box for the move (not fun getting that box up a ramp of a U-Haul truck), and hasn't found another home yet. It does look like a fair bit of the stuff in the lower cabinet will be moving to dedicated "task" tool boxes.

Even so, I'm going to need more space in the cabinet, so I plan to find a mid-cabinet or fit it with a side cabinet. As I'm quite OCD, I want the cabinet addition to match (at least colour and style of drawer pull), so if I can't get matching stuff from Sears, then I'll probably get a mid cabinet or a side cabinet from International. A side cabinet will probably be more useful, but most of them appear to have been designed to attach to the taller 37" or so bottom cabinets. If I get something like this, I'll have some adapting to do to get it mounted to the side of my 30" cabinet.
