Your favorite Dead blow hammer

I have been looking into getting a new set of dead blow hammers for a while now, right now i have a cheap soft face set and they are all beat to hell and have big chunks out of them.

I have looked at SO-SK-Mac-Craftsman Dead blow just wanted to get some opinions on what people think and which ones they like and even maybe there favorite application for them.

a few of the other guys in our shop have the Mac equivalent and there all chiped up on the hammer face, plus their like $100

Unfortunately I have no idea who the manafacturer is. All they say on them is "Calgary, AB". I looked for these for 2 years before i found these.

When I first got into the trade two older technicians had these. Over the years they held up way better than the Mac/Snap-on/SK dead-blows in the shop, which would split etc. However, they had gotten them from a travelling salesman who came to the shop. As I said, there are no markings and after lots and lots of googling I gave up looking for them.

Over 2 years later I stumbled across these in my local "House of Tools" (Canada only) and bought one in every size. They were pricey (over $100 for the big one) but worth every penny. They've been beating the ends of shafts and stuff for years and barely have a mark on them.

Don't know where you'd find them in the U.S.A though.

i think you'll find that most are made by trusty-cook. so chose whoever you get the best service from.

HANDS DOWn that Vaughn dead blow hammer with the two removable white faces that can screw on and off when you want to change them.

I have two of those suckers now. The first one I bought for $40 at a local shop, and now I see them for about $60 so they must be pretty good. )

I like the Harbor Freight ones. They are probably the same ones as the Northern tools ones. Cheap, well built and if you ever break one you can take it back and get a new one.

The SOs with the hard metal face might also be nice to have one of.

Matco, Mac, and Cornwell are all Compo-thane. The Snap-On's are a bit different, but I think from the same supplier. I have metal headed ball peins, a psiton hammer, and a 10lb Armstrong sledge.

You have really five choices:

The molded type with shot filled heads

The replaceable face type

leather faced

Hard wood mallets

Copper / Brass / Lead

Take your pick. Each have their place

I have one of those too and it's held up fine.

I have 3 of the HF ones, in fact they were on sale today and I picked up another for $4.99 why not?

The Snap On ball peen dead blow (Trusty Cook) is my favorite... but I also have a Nupla with steel/rubber faces that is really handy too. The orange HF is quite good for the cost.

I use one like the orange one in Ed's pic for helping to assemble bookcases, I also have the black AP ones but they mark wood.

I have the Matco ones and I've been very happy with them. The only time I've ever chipped a piece off of the face is when I've hit something very sharp, which will obviously break off pieces no matter what the MFG. I actually just ordered two more of different weights.

Thank you all for all of you're input, I just ended up not being able to make up my mind so i bought one of each SK-SO-Mac-Craftsman.

Ill run them through the ringer and see what one i like the best before investing in a bigger set.

For any one who is wondering the shop i work at pays 50% of all tools bought so i can play a bit with out it hurting my checkbook

I like the handles on my SO. IMO the matco ones (at least the older ones i have seen) have a really rough grip that I dont like. The 24 oz one in the middle top is my fav for all around hitting. As you can tell it looks well used.
