That's cheating. The only correct method of lettering requires a brush and a can of One-Shot.

I've got one of those in my shirt pocket right now and a few cases at the office. As common as they are around my shop, i've never used one on a vise.
I use a fine brush and modeling paint, just like Senlow

I always thought you should use duct tape, and a small paint roller...
Or duct tape "masking", an exacto knife and then use the roller ..

What inch jaw is the Craftsman and what does it weigh, if you don't mind me asking?

Just measured the jaws they are 4 1/2 inches. Opens 8 plus inches and it is damn heavy!!! Haven't weighed it but I would guess near 100lbs?
Just waiting on my order from McMaster for the check ball oiler that needed to be replaced then she is done.
Works nice and smooth!!!
Two more Wilton's came home with me today, an 820 and a 825. Well I think its an 825; there are no numbers on the casting but it has 2 1/2 jaws. I will try to post better pic's tomorrow. This was a three way deal that a friend of mine got me into so I ended up with these for $200 cash to my friend, he sold his restored Delta DP and another collector who got the DP for cash and part trade of the vises. Everyone was happy, happy, happy

I would love to see a picture of the 825 jaws, they look much coarser then I have seen and use on the ones I build. The pitch of mine are .075 between points.

1933 Craftsman No. 5215 just getting wrapped up. 3 1/2" jaws. Definitely has seen some use in its life but honestly not bad for being 80 years old. Anybody know who the OEM is on these?
I'm really impressed the hardie made it all these years without getting lost. Is that a nut splitter? I've never had a vise with this feature before.

OEM was probably Rock Island. They were making the larger ones at the time.
The part sticking up from the anvil surface was usually referred to as a cut off tool. You would lay something, such as a wire, over the top and tap it with a hammer to cut it.
Nice paint color.

The chisel is for setting a piece of bar stock on, smacking the stock with a hammer, flipping in over and doing the same, then putting the bar in the vise and snapping it off. Faster than a hacksaw.
I suspect this MAY have been made by Littlestown for Sears, they are very similar. Hard to say for sure thought since so many made essentially the same vise.
Not sure about the '33 date though, the '33 was a 5501 yours is a 5215. Almost certainly made by the same company though. What jaw width? The '33 was 3" wide. and only opened to 3-1/4"

Thanks for the kind words guys. Glad to hear what that little hardie thing is for, I figured something like that.
The patent date on it is Mar. 14 1933, it's stamped into the slide. Not sure exactly of the manufacture year though. I was thinking Rock Island personally. I had a Rock Island in that style and also a Littlestown. This one looks close to the Rock Island to my eyes. I also considered American Scale as a manufacturer option but not sure if they ever made anything for Sears.
The color is Rust-Oleum Metallic Cobalt Blue No. 7251 It's a gorgeous color with the light bouncing off it, just a tiny bit of flake in it. Looks really sharp in person.

balane, I have one that is marked only with V10 & V11 as discussed in other posts. The front jaw & slide are exactly the same. The reinforcing collar around the front edge and extending underneath in the middle. The handle on mine seems a little smaller than yours and no cut off tool. I guess the OEM made them a bit different for each retailer.

This is my new favorite vise at the 'Lazy J'. Very unusual unit. The static jaw rotates upon release to conform to different shaped objects. Also, it has a quick release trigger as well as a brass flip out protective jaw. Quite heavy and well built.

The vise in question says 'DOHM LTD' on the nameplate with a London address. I have not been able to find much on the net yet. What I did find it is a specialty company consisting of two engineers and a secretary. But this is one neat vise regardless.
Anyone familiar with a book by Kenneth Cope that has the history of Athol vises?
I have been trying to date my Athol 614-1/2 for a couple of months now and finally came across the following post:
" From Ken Cope's book the company was founded in 1868, acquired by Starrett in 1905, named changed to Athol Machine & Foundary Co. in 1930 and ceased operation in 1963."
I think most people assume that since Starrett bought Athol is 1905, that all of the Athol-branded vises are older than this date. But there are several catalogs that show up on the internet from post-WWII years that advertise Athol brand vises...without Starrett's name on them. My vise says Athol M&F Co on it, so it seems that it has to be post 1930...not quite as old as I thought...but still much older than me and still beefy.

This old Reed 105 1/2 had been beat up so bad I used trunk spatter paint to cover up the dents & dings. This is my first two tone paint job. I normally will leave them bare or a neutral paint finish. I am still thinking do I like it or not ?

I like the looks of that trunk spatter on the vise!! Do the whole thing that way. Just my opinion.

Ok, I guess I need some corrective answers for identifying my Wilton bullet. I don't know where I got the info from originally but I had the model C4 stuck in my head on this vise. Now I think I'm incorrect. Any light on this vise as far as a model? There is no date stamp in the typical location, so all I have to go on is size and logo placement. Ideas?

You wilton is an older model. But current model equivalent is a 450. I know the numbers for the wilton bullets.

Well I didn't technically buy it but I did just refinish this one for somebody else. 4 1/2" Wilton C1, 1978. Italian Olive is the color.

That vise is interesting. There was another vise posted a while back that had a similar rotating plate for holding various profiles. Member Big Pete posted pictures of it, but it didn't have a name or brand on it. I presume Big Pete is in the UK since he also has a Swindens vice which he found at a junkyard. The vise was pictured on page 432 of this thread, post 8632. The vise isn't exactly the same though.

Here's two I got today. The Yost 32C (4" Combination Swivel) was an eBay auction where I just bid $5 higher than the current bid thinking more people would bid closer to the end of the auction, but nobody did.. lol. It has seen some use but is still in very good shape. It's my first Yost.
The guy was local so I drove over to his place to pick it up. He had a couple others there. I ended up also buying this Morgan Chicago 50 (5" Swivel). It weighs ~85 lbs. The Morgan doesn't even look like it was ever used, just a little surface rust but other than that... They were part of a lot he bid on some government surplus stuff. Super nice guy. I probably paid more than I should have for the Morgan, but he was nice, the vise is mint, and since I didn't have to pay shipping it I think we both felt the price was fair.

Ive had this wilton 500 since january, just wasnt sure where to put it. My bench isnt very sturdy so i went with a semi drum base.
