You are right Zoom. I don't know why I said chrome. but after 100 years you can barely tell it anyway except on the handle. It's just enough to know that it had been there at one time. P.S. You know you stole that little Prentiss don't you. You did good, real good. It's like you said, diligence pays off. That's money in the bank.

And the second one I just finished is this older Craftsman 3 1/2" vise, model number 391.5180

I like doing a two tone on these, the lines look nice with it.

I won't argue with you there, I got a good deal on that one...
I could make a few bucks on that one, if I could only sell it... lol!
Hoarding vises and anvils seems to be an issue in this house!
Take care!

I picked up this one for $20 from a Craigslist seller. Actually spent $34 for the vise, 2 flashlights, a 10 amp battery charger, and a Kill-O-Watt meter. The vise weighs about 45 lbs. The swivel base bolts were missing. I put these 1/2 carriage bolts. No name is on it. Web/forum search finds similar vises made in China or Taiwan with various manufacture names like Allied, Omega.

Here's a little Stevens watch makers vise.------ Weighs 3 lbs.------jaws, 1 7/8 inches------was chromed all over.------ A recent E-bay purchase. Not nearly the deal b100 got on his Stevens ratchet vise, you can see on page 540, or Zoomies baby Prentiss he snatched off E-bay. They all but broke the law with their purchases. But I was satisfied with mine. Only thing missing is the stop peg at the back of the slide.

Beautiful little vise:D. I love the little jewlers vises and they seem to bring as much as a big vise sometimes. I have a couple bigger ones like it but with no name at all. I think one was maybe a fisher. Will dig them out and see. THey do not crop up very often.

It must be a Morgan #180, but mine only weighs like 210lbs... I don't think they ever made a 9", but I don't know... Maybe the 265lbs was just a guess. Mines in better shape, $2,100 firm, lol!

This Wilton is on Dallas Craigslist for $40. Deal?

2rw2bz8.jpg

Lets see; it's been thrashed hard, the base is missing at least one ear, and is cracked through at that point, the swivel lock is missing it's handle, the main screw retainer appears to be missing...

It might be worth a little as a parts vise, but what else is damaged/broken? :dunno:

If its really close by you might take a look and make and offer, but if it's a drive, fagataboutit.

I saw this Wilton C3 in a pawn shop yesterday and went back and got it this morning. The date is 6 97. The internal part of the base has a crack that has been brazed. It looks like a casting design flaw and probably typical. The paint is original from what I can see. It is all there except for the front top of the jaws. So it hasn't seen much use.

Is this a "bullet" model? There is a hole in the back end. It is missing the dynamic jaw pipe clamp. Anyone have a spare for a C3? The thing is HEAVY! Now I know first hand! Oh and I guess I got a good deal at $350.

Thanks for looking, John

Seeing all these cool vises makes me jealous that I haven't had much luck locally to find one... So it inspired me to redo the one I have...So I ordered some hammered verde green to redo my wilton vise... Wasn't happy how the bronze came out...

Stripped down to bare metal...(again) and used some filler primer to try to hide the nicks.

For 350.00, you did really good. You didn't steal it but you should be able to sleep with a clear conscience tonight for that price. :D

C3's are in the big boy vise arena and the damage you have on yours is very typical of Wiltons with a 2 part base. If you have something clamped down in the vise and are really cranking on it, lots of that force is being transferred to that little, poorly cast ring underneath the base.

The cap is missing about 50% of the time on used Wiltons. Ive made a few myself, as have a number of other members on here. If you do some looking, you should be able to find a mention on this thread about how to do one. I made one using a old Ford brake hub dust cap with tools everybody would have in their garage, and i don't mean a full machine shop:bounce:, just your typical household garage:D

You can buy another pipe jaw insert from Kevin at Wiltonviseparts.com

That's a beauty! Cracked rings are not uncommon. Make sure its got the pin stock in the center that goes into the base of the vise. That's what keep it centered but also, that's what cracked the base to begin with. Someone over loosened that vise when rotating and took it off center, The pin stayed in the base ring and when it was retightened it did not go back into its hole causing the ring to crack when cranked down.
Wilton never used red paint to my knowledge. That one is money in the bank.

Any guesses about the identity of this vise? Was listed on craigslist. Seller says they'll try to find out the manufacturer tomorrow but figured someone here might know something

The Main Body/dynamic jaw looks vintage, US but that main screw head screams Import? :dunno:

If there is a large numeral on the far side of the dynamic jaw, I vote import however...

Sector9, besides what Outlaw said if you go look at that vise take a good look at the static jaw looks like it may have been welded on the side right where the top slide corner is front to back.

What do you think of the crack in the slide from this 3-1/2" Monarch Model 213? Might be able to get it for $30 locally, can that be welded up? The rest of of it looks pretty good but is that indicative of a past pounding on the slide and perhaps internal damage? Seller says it works fine...

That is a VERY common "injury" to the Monarch/Prentiss... In addition to someone using the slide as an anvil, I think there was some kind of design flaw. I've seen Parker's and the like crack in that area, but the number of Monarch's with the same flaw seems disproportionally high to me. I'm sure it works fine, if you have the ability to weld it, go for it. If you are looking for a "collector piece", pass... Just an opinion.
Take care!

Vise Rescue!
I found an old Yost in an antique shop, and felt duty bound to save it from "display piece" status or the scrapyard. It's a Yost no. 1. Markings are a capital Y on the dynamic jaw and YOST MFG CO MEADVILLE PA NO 1
For those of you, like me, who don't know your Yost model numbers, it's a 3 1/2" covered screw swivel base with the center bolt that goes clear through the workbench. It's all there, locking disc, wingnut and washer, jaws, handle. But it's in terrible condition. Rust, old paint, saw and file marks on the jaws, and worst of all, a large chunk about 6" long is broken out of the slide and missing. (pix to follow - can't post them from here)
With that amount of damage, I doubt it's worth fixing. It would take a large amount of work to make a replacement piece and weld it in. Unless it's extremely valuable because it's a No. 1, I think it's best used as an organ donor. If any of you are interested in parts let me know.
I haven't torn it down yet, and won't get to it for a few days. In the meantime, I'm curious about its age. Hard to do without pictures, but maybe someone can hazard a guess.
Thanks!

I'd go for $30.00. Just drill a small hole at the end of the crack and braze it. If everything on it is OK and it has a cool patina, get it.

This VISES thread was how I discovered GJ, as I was looking for a part for a small Wilton vise I've had forever. Who knew there were other folks like me that got excited about a vise, LOL? While looking for the parts for my old vise, I found a 1981 Wilton 400s on eBay. I've beat the hell out of the small Wilton for 25 years and needed something bigger anyways. I searched CL and there was nothing. I started looking around at HF, Lowe's, Northern, and decided that I'd rather 'over pay' $200 for the used Wilton than buy a crappy import. So, it arrived today. It's seen some use for sure, has some welding spatter here and there, scratches and gouges but is tight and solid with no cracks or major rust. I hit it with some WD-40 and a brush. Not sure I'm going to restore it with paint, etc. Might just bolt it down and start beating on it:) Oh, and I did find the parts for the 'little red Wilton' too - since my dad gave that one to me, it might be the restoration project vise.....

So I got this vise from a co-worker for $35. It is missing some parts (will need new pads and is missing the the swivel base) and the is a broken piece missing from on side of the jaw. It seems to be in great shape otherwise. Any help identifying which vise model it is and ideas on getting parts?

Thanks!

Have a look at a rather 'uncommon' vise on the S. F. bay area Craig's list

(I'm not recommending buying it, you understand, but what do you make of the lettering on the fixed jaw casting?)

Here's a link......maybe someone who knows how to do computer work can 'save' the photo to post here?

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/tls/4202464499.html

cheers

I see...

TICER or TIGER or VICER

Looks like a wood vise handle welded on to the lead screw, busted slide, and IDK about where the dynamic meets the slide. But I've never seen this brand, so rare/ish maybe...
