Another +1 on them being stands / indexes / holders, but not guides.

They're a nice compact design, nice save.

Yup, I left behind some Snap-on that they had over priced based on looking them up on eBay. I took all the reasonably priced tools. Check out these two really cool drill guides I picked up there.

Not too shabby. Sounds like it'd be worth a look, better than working through lunch at least.

Recent estate sale and yard sale finds. $42 for everything pictured. First picture didn't have anything to exciting. I got a couple of mauls, some heavy gauge jumper cables, a hand crank pump, staple gun, a couple of pry bars, a Craftsman mean torque wrench, pipe clamp, a basin wrench and some other stuff.

The second pic had some cooler stuff to include a 12" Westcott adjustable, a small Utica vise, egg beater drill, cobbler pliers, smallest ball pein I own, gun cleaning kit, smallest lineman pliers I own and some other stuff (mostly USA). I am not sure what the pliers next to the pick axe head are for.

Was able to hit a couple of well advertised estate sales today during a little longer lunch.

First stop, I thought ( hoping) it was some kind of drill bit sharpener, buts its a valve grinder. Name on the chuck is "Albertson & co." This thing weighes aboout 80 lbs.

Underneath has quite a set up, looks like guide bars are brass. Everything rotates, motor hums and tries to turn, won't quite make it.

The Atlas 618 lathe I picked up from a friends shop, it has a big handful of minor issues, no quick change gears. Parts are kinda pricey for this machine from my inital research. Not sure if Im going to pursure trying to get it going or hope to find a little bigger lathe. Whenever one comes up, its gone right away.

mudman,
Those pliers next to the pickaxe head are, I think, farrier's (horseshoeing) tongs. I picked up similar ones by Diamond at a sale last summer. Some cool stuff in your haul there.

Far from a garage sale, I woke up today with a cleaning spirit. I loaded the bed of my truck up with scrap metal junk that I couldn't see using or repurposing and headed off to the new recycle place around the corner. Usually I just give it to my scrap guy friend or swap it for good junk that he picks up, today I planned to speak with the scrappers about setting aside tools and things for me so I took it myself, glad I did!
I get over there and we start shooting the **** about how I found the place, yada yada, etc. and I mention I buy tools. He says, "come with me" and takes me to a big back room. I am instantly overwhelmed with good junk, like a pickers freakin dream in there. He points to a big Grizzly lathe and says, how about that? I'm interested but beside it I see this poor lil Craftsman lathe looking all sad like a puppy at the pound. Before I knew it, I blurted out "would you take $50?" and we shook hands on the Craftsman. After a quick look around I go collect my ticket and cash and it turns out I made $69.87 for my scrap metal. Basically, I got paid $19.87 and a lathe to clean up my shop today and now I have a great new tool connection!!

from what i understand it is a carburetor synchronizer intended for motorcycles , it uses a small amount of mercury and the four tubes have individual hoses for attachment to different carburetors. The metal backing piece has a graduated scale , and you're supposed to adjust the carbs ( somehow ) so that they all **** the same amount of vacuum

Its getting to be that time of year, only one sale today. Picked up these 2 hand drills for $4. The Yankee driver is pretty cool I had never seen one like this before.

Great score on the lathe. It looks like the Craftsman version of the Atlas 618 like I have.
Someone should be shot for taking it to a scrap yard.
Can we imagine what is not caught before being shredded?

9four, nice score on the lathe. I found my Atlas 12x36 cabinet model in a scrap metal yard. The only sign of use on it was a wood lathe arbor in the tailstock (since it didn't rotate, I don't see how it would have worked) and some wood shavings in the pan. I couldn't close the half nuts on the lead screw, and when I got it home and looked, the threads of the lead screw were full of cosmoline (preservative grease) from the factory! It had been scrapped by a Federal Government agency.

Someone should be shot, but I'm kind of glad they weren't in this case

Thanks man, just a quick glance shows the bed to be in way better condition than the 12" I have now, it's just so tiny though...I put it on Cl for a stupid amount, not really stupid for around here but stupid for what I got it for. :lol_hitti If it don't sell this weekend, I'll part it out come Monday. It seems as though rent comes around monthly whether I work or not :spit:

YOU SUCKeth, and thanks for running the abandonded tool home. I can't believe some scrapped that beauty. :headshake Just think what you prevented it from becoming. Possibly a HF tool. :willy_nil How big was the grizzly he had? Those are decent lathes, as long as it isn't clapped out.

Agreed, 94GMC, those 618 lathes are in great demand from guys doing small engine builds etc. The Yahoo group has a large membership of owners of 618's.

Strange day today. First snow storm, good day for a garage and estate sale, right? :headscrat I haven't stumbled onto many garage sales recently, but tried a few today.

Found some nice stuff I have been needing, like the grease gun and fork, window tool. Not sure why I grabbed the picks and a little Kennedy box with tray to carry it all to the car in, $17 for all .My favorite is the adorable little Vaughan ball pein hammer. Any ideas on the weight, 2oz maybe? I can get dims if needed. That is a AA battery for size reference. Never thought I would go to a garage sale in the snow in December. Bad influence this forum is.

Nice lathes Shayne. It seems like you can't fall down without landing on a serious piece of machinery.

Here is todays little haul. The sale was the only good looking sale and there were about 30 to choose from. It seems that the company putting it on allows mailing list members to come and buy a day early. At least they left me a few things to let me know i missed out the day before:sad:

An almost complete New Britian ½" socket set, missing 2 but the set included two odd sizes.

Craftsman underline DBE wrench, socket and speeder.

2 Petersen vise grips

Plomb combo wrench, socket with NR markings and a P&C socket

Stiletto mill file in excellent shape. It matches my Stiletto axe head I've got laying around.

Really old Ridgid 6" pipe wrench

Snap on puller, stud remover and a like new 1 ¼" crowfoot in ½"drive.

Hollands 14 vise

What did he want for the Grizzly? I'd be more concerned about the grizzly being worn out than the craftsman. Sadly, I could see a company or home owner getting rid of the craftsman just because it is old, where as the probably reason for getting rid of the grizzly to the scrap yard is for being worn out. That large "Made in China" is a little painful. :lol_hitti

He wouldn't say a price, he wanted me to make an offer but I only had a few dollars on me so I told him I'd get back with him. Everything you said, I was concerned about it being damaged and the big MADE IN CHINA was eyeballing me while I paid for the Craftsman :p

That lathe looks pretty old, I had no idea Grizzly had been importing machines from China for so long. That logo is kinda cool though.

Do you know of table that compares dimensions to weight for ball peens? Is there a standard correlation? How is a guy to determine the size of his hammer without pulling the head off the handle to weigh it? :dunno:

I use a 1 lb, "Diet scale" and set the hammer head in and sort of hold the handle sideways to it try and neutralize the weight of the handle. once you get the hang of it, you can get close enough to gauge it. Of course I can also compare to other known hammers weights, to "calibrate" the estimation.

I checked out a pair of Estate Sales that looked promising this morning. Neither was that great once I got there, but the first had a few things to look at. The second was just junk, literally. They had piles of trash in the corners of the rooms.

I did have some luck at the first one though. They had a few small silver Kennedy machinists boxes they were asking $10ea for. I checked them out, but they're not what I'm looking for. I did pick up a small Kennedy mid box though, and a pair of Wiss shears.

The Kennedy is a #MC-22-446929. It measures :
21 3/4" wide
9 3/4" deep
7 3/4" high
No key for the lock though. It still had felt in the top drawer, the bottom never had it. It is a little smaller than what I wanted, but the price was right.

The Shears are Wiss #22W.
I also found a Kennedy camlock w/key (not right for the new box, but I'll find a use for it eventually)

I paid $10 for everything. :rocker:

Jake, YOU **** for that kennedy riser and lock at $10, looks to be in real nice condition. What "silver machinist boxes for $10" did they have? I'm surprised you didn't pick at least one up. Cracks me up how some parts of the country are chock full of super cheap machinist boxes, others seem to be hard to find and $$$$ when found. :dunno:

I thought about picking up the boxes, but I really don't have a use, or room for them. They were both the standard machinist's layout, but small. I'm guessing at 9x18 (maybe 20), smaller than the riser. One was painted over with a brush, the other was just like the standard brown wrinkle, but it was smooth silver instead. At 10 bucks it was REALLY tempting, but I'm trying to exercise restraint (so I can blow my money on other junk I don't need :D) Usually they go for $40-$50 around here, but I'm not a reseller or I would have cleaned them out.

These made my day...

I'm a long time (and very frequent lurker) on this thread. I don't post much, but I decided to share todays good fortune...Wife is away for the weekend with the daughters and it's just me and my son! So, we went Estate Saleing this morning and we picked up:

Matco 316A1
Saw this in an ad for a, somewhat, local estate sale. I've been looking for one of these for 5 or 6 years, so I wanted to make sure I at least tried to get it. This would complete my set, as I already have the top and middle boxes. Well, I got it...and was very happy to pay the $50! Needs some clean up, but overall very good condition.

Craftsman 14hp bench grinder
At a different estate sale we hit on the way home. No other tools, I almost tripped over this: $10! Excellent condition; dusty/a bit grimy; should clean up real well.

He was a trooper too. It was cold and he slept in the car, on the way. So he could have been ornery. He didn't complain once. Good lil' guy.
