Been a lurker for along time on GJ, finally able to post my build in hopes of helping someone out with their build. I have gained so much knowledge from this site, it is amazing. I hope I can give back a little. I know that the pics are what everyone wants to see, me too. :) So I will do my best to get lots of pics along the way. My lasy shop at my last house was 40x60x14 and I soon found out that I needed more space. So I vowed to build it the way I wanted the first time on this go around which will hopefully be the last time as I have no intention of ever moving again. I have thought about everything that I liked about the last one and hopefully everything that I wanted to change. I dont' think that any shop is ever " done " but I am gonna make a honest try at this one. Here are the specs:

Timber frame/ pole barn style build with framed in and finished walls on the inside.

60x100x18
Last 16' of building - gravel carport of sorts
4-12 pitch - metal roof
Scissor trussed for extra high ceilings
Bat and board siding stained
4 - 12x14 garage doors - wood colored w/ windows up top
4 - man doors, one on each side
Lots of windows
16x60 loft up stairs - future bar-kitchen and party room w/ deck
bathroom with shower, toilet sink downstairs
Thermofoil - spray in closed cell insulation and sealed
Roof peak is 30'
Under loft and bathroom height 10'
Loft should be about 19+/- ft high

Central Boiler ECL2400 wood fired for radiant floor heat in the slab.
I will be building my house next as well, and this boiler will heat BOTH.
Slab floor 6" thick with R20 insulation underneath

2 Post a-symmetrical hoist - 10,000lb
4 Post drive on hoist as well - separate bays

There is lots more, but onto a few pics. I will update this as best as I can as we go along. Excavation started on Sunday December 22nd. :bounce:

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

Why did you go for pole construction? seems like after the price of poles 2x4s and metal it would be about the same price to go with stick construction.

I priced the shop both ways, I did stick frame last time and I am building it larger and nicer this time for less money. I also will have it better insulated and better construction. The timbers are 8ft in the ground with 7 ft of concrete holding them.:D

Got home too dark for pics. 1 truss up, 3 walls framed in, more pics in the am. This was day 4 of work, they took Xmas and a few days off.

Wow! 60x100! Congratulations. Looking forward to your build. Will this be just for your personal shop or will you run a business out off it too? Best of luck with your build.

This is too weird. I have property off highway 20 between Bend and Sisters and we have the same view of the three sisters. I'm not used to seeing it in other people's photos.

About a month ago I was up putting new stairs on my barn and I used equipment from Sisters Rental and Mike's mobile mix. The same guy from Mikes was out at our property doing our pour.

I am jealous of you new pole barn.

Cary on.

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

Pics from today, progress from yesterday was 2 walls framed in, and 1 truss set. Today when I get home in the dark :( all trusses will be up and all walls should be framed. Pics from early am before I had to go to work.

I can't wait to see this one come together. That is a stunning view.

And you're building the shop before the house...kudos to you. I would never get away with that :bounce:

My wife and my 2 boys agreed to live in our 5th wheel camper on the property to avoid paying rent at a house. Long story short, got screwed over by another bank on our land and construction loans and our project was supposed to start on sept 1st. We started dec 22nd with a new bank that we are very happy with. We have been living in the 5th wheel on property since aug 1st. My wife is a trooper to say the least. We are doing the shop first so we can put the 5th wheel in there quickly and live there until the house is done. The shop will be heated and insulated with a bathroom and shower, so that will be much nicer than hauling water and having to use a outhouse like we have been doing for 5 months.

Awesome! It will be done before you know it. Looks like your wearer is better than we are in having in OH. Glad my exterior is done.

Re: 60x100x18 - New MSD shop in the PNW.

Are the side walls 16' and the center of truss 18' ?

My builder told me here that is was cheaper to go 2' higher sidewall than going with a raised truss and also have a benefit of higher ceiling for entire width.

Going to be a fun build to watch.

Re: 60x100x18 - New MSD shop in the PNW.

Walls are 18' at the edge, the center of the truss is scissored, so it is 22' - i believe, have to recheck that now that you asked, ceiling height over all is just under 30' at the center.

18' sidewall with 22' down the center and 30' at the peak will be sweet!

Those boys should be able to play basketball in there. Going to be awesome.

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

Not a huge update, all the blocking is done, sheathing is done on west wall, gravel is half done for the floor and the carport area is framed in. I will be setting pins for the house tomorrow. Meeting with plumber and concrete guy tomorrow as well to set up plumbing for shop bathroom and radiant floor heat piping.

Looking good. Glad I'm the guy doing the steel for that back wall with all the windows. That sure is going let some natural light in.

Small window in NW corner is where the bathroom and shower will be as well as the mechanical room.

Jeez! You'd get 10 of my 20x30 in there, and mine's big by UK standards (my garage that is! - stop laughing at the back! Yes! YOU BOY!).

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

Thanks guys, this was not a build to be bigger than anyone else, this was a function of usable space for the end use and intended purpose of the shop. My last shop was 40x60 w/ 14' walls. There was a small loft but you had to duck to be up there, standard trusses. The workspace was filling up with projects all the time, so we knew we needed to go bigger. We frequently have friends over and have monthly work parties on eachother's hot rods and 4x4's. So more space will help with that as well. I also wanted to incorporate a large loft to build a rec room for my two boys and their friends. I feel as they get older, if we have the shop that all their friends want to come hang out in, I don't have to worry about my boys out doing something dangerous, because they will be in the shop instead.

The loft will eventually house a couch, loveseat, bar and small kitchen. It will have a pool table, ping pong and maybe a pop a shot b-ball setup. We are also going to put french doors in on the west side and a deck with a BBQ. I hope that my boys and their buddies will love it as they grow up and keep close to home when there are gatherings.

Re: 60x100x18 - New MSD shop in the PNW.

I know the feeling your having, "trying to justify the building size" to others. Don't worry about it, never understood why others can't be happy for people. (I'm not talking about anyone that has posted, just the sense I got from you last post). You've obviously worked hard and you want to have something that your family can enjoy. I agree with your thought of hoping your kids and their friends will want to hang out at your place. Every dime your spending will be worth it if it keeps your kids on the right path and your family together.

Enjoy your building.

I'm about two hours north of you. We are looking at some property and I got the wife talked into the same plan of building the shop first. We were considering putting a small, in-laws, apartment in it and then building the house but same concept.

You are getting soooooo lucky with the weather!

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

I have seen a few garages on here that do a loft instead of attic truss. I suspect it is more affordable to do this, allowing for more of a spread on the trusses.

Is cost the reason you do the loft, or? Not to hijack, but if anyone has done this I wouldn't mind seeing how they worked out for you.

Cool garage, wish I had that kind of space, wow. What are you doing for heat? (I only skimmed, if I missed it I apologize).

You can never have to much space for hotrods! Very nice build.
