THE ASYLUM GETS A NEW WORK TRUCK…

If you’ve been following this thread for a number of years, you may know I have been extremely happy with the versatility of my 2003 Chevy Avalanche over the years. (See Reply #430 and Reply #438 for some background info.) Year 2013 marked the last year for production of this versatile truck and I decided to trade up to a new one before the door shut on my opportunity. I was pretty sad to let my blue 2003 go, but I’ve been driving that truck for 11 years now and the new car smell has long gone. I was actually a very tough decision for me since my old one was in perfect shape and only had 48K on the clock.

Here is the old Blue 2003 Avalanche right before I got rid of it.

2436-Avalanche 2003 - Last Day-10.JPG 2437-Avalanche 2003 - Last Day-11.JPG

And here is the new baby.

2438-Avalanche 2013 - First Day-11.JPG 2439-Avalanche 2013 - First Day-21.jpg
2440-Avalanche 2013 - Second Day-06.JPG 2441-Avalanche 2013 - First Day-15.JPG

All 2013 Avalanches are considered "Black Diamond" editions, regardless of color. The BD name signifies the more challenging downhill runs at a ski resort and falls in line with the Avalanche name. The domed emblem on the sides of the truck is sort of cool.

2442-Avalanche 2013 - First Day-22.jpg

Since 2013 marks the last model year, I’m going to get a personalized coffee table book commemorating the Avalanche production run from 2002 to 2013. I thought that was pretty cool and can’t wait to get it. It supposedly has a dedication page and the window sticker from my very truck.

So I guess I’m set for another 10-11 years. :) The next new vehicle for me is a little ways out, but will probably be of the two-wheeled variety. My 2001 Triumph Tiger will need replacing someday so I guess I better start reading up on what’s out there in the Adventure-Touring category. I’m sure Mrs. Shopnut will be pushing hard for a R1200GS (she likes those BMWs!!!).

Congrats on the truck. The storage area is looking good also. Once again, way to utilize what you have to get the job done.

Your "lofty" goals always inspire me...<groan> I could not pass that one up I seem to have beaten Ompha to the PUNch. Love the new ride, I always thought those would make an ideal farm truck for me and the boys.

akdiesel - Thanks. I hope to make some good progress on the loft in the next week or so.

flybefree - Funny. You know, I'm not sure what happened to Ompha. There's been no word from him since Sept on the GJ - I hope he's alright. He's probably just knee deep in his own projects and can't get to his computer to entertain us.

The Avalanche really works well for my needs with its midgate pass-through hatch. Often, I buy my building materials ahead of time and they need to store in the truck until I make a trip to the Asylum. It's nice knowing they are secure and dry inside there. Although it has a truck bed, I would have a hard time dumping a load of gravel or something back there - I would be cleaning it for weeks!!! My trucks get treated pretty well, though. I'm sure other people treat them as "real" trucks, however. :)

Re: Ompha.... Have sent PM and sent e-mail. No response. Miss his clever posts in our respective threads. Last post to me was that he was sanding drywall in his shop storage space....

Just want to wish Season's Greetings to you and to all that contribute to your great thread.

Best.

Ody.

An early Christmas present to shopnut!

The way that you pampered Ole Blue, the Black Diamond will last a long time. I'm impressed that it only had 48K miles.

The lofty ideas really turned out well, as usual! You probably would not have seen that space as an opportunity without the ASCEND to get things up there. (Yes, Omph is missed!)

ODIS – That’s concerning with no response from Ompha. Hopefully that drywall dust didn’t have any ill effects.

Thanks for the greetings and I will return to you wishes of a joyous Holiday Season for you and yours.

Wingnut65 – Thanks, the loft is getting there, but still not ready for the goods. I still need to route some electrical through there for the yard lights, re-mount the water hose reel inside, and finish up the metal siding.

My miles get spread out over my truck and a couple of bikes. I put about twice as many miles on the bikes as I do the truck, thanks to living in FL. Add to that, Mrs. Shopnut and I carpool to work, so we often hop in her car as well.

WELL, THE NEW TRUCK ISN'T QUITE NEW ANYMORE…

With a mere 250 miles showing on the odometer (and about 1 week in my possession), the new Avalanche got christened. I guess it was more of a little love tap at a red light, but it still just doesn't seem right because there just absolutely no reason for it. A bunch of cars had already stopped for a red light and I was slowly easing to a stop behind them. A complete stop was made for a second or two, and BAM, some lady rear-ends me. Actually, it was me, Mrs. Shopnut, and my parents (who were down for a quick visit to soak up some Florida sun). The fact that the afternoon visiting with my parents was ruined by this incident was probably the worst part of the whole deal, really.

This picture shows the dimple in her car's front bumper where it hit my hitch receiver.

2443-Avalanche-Accident-01.JPG

This one shows the bent bracket for the trailer connector.

2444-20131207_131150.jpg

And this shows some of the scratches in the bumper cover just above the hitch.

2445-DSC_3011.JPG

The lady was issued a ticket and her insurance company assessed the damage to my truck at $400. Honestly, you could barely see it, so I messed with it for about 2 hours to straighten a few things out and do a little paint touchup on the scratches and just pocketed the money. I figured I was bound to scratch something back there sooner or later hooking up to the trailer and now I don't have to feel bad about putting the first scratch in myself.

Sorry to hear about your adventures with law enforcement and the insurance industry. But at least we are having beautiful weather to have this adventure.

No sense in shopnut driving around in a damaged vehicle, let me have it!

If you need room in the shop to work on it, I can help with the C3...

Funny Wingnut, but it's all behind me now (no pun intended!)

I was actually impressed with the ladies insurance company (Progressive). No, I didn't get to meet the crazy lady, Flo :(. But one of their drive thru service centers was nearby and I walked out of there in 30 minutes with a claim check in my hand. I estimated the damage at roughly $450 myself, so they weren't too far off and I was happy with the settlement. They even had onsite car rentals had I needed it.

I might have to do some insurance shopping in the near future.

Wow...that didn't take long! Sorry about that. I HATE the first dent...hurts more than the next ten...at least on my minivan. Glad the insurance is going to cooperate.

Oh shopnut do yourself a favor get that truck checked out by someone other than progressive. I dealt with that stupid "consigliere" from its inception and can tell you its the worst thing to happen to the collision business in a long time :shocking:. My number2 son is a heavy collision tech and just did a rear frame section on one of those trucks(GM sells a repair section) and told me the newer truck frames are waek by design in the rear :dunno:
I would at the very least make sure it gets tramed out or better yet put on a measuring system just to be safe. its just my opinion

I'm not certain if I've posted here but if I haven't just wanted to say that your posts and storytelling is top notch. And then your use of space and engineering is over the top.

One thing, I see you haven't adjusted your signature to state you no longer own a 2003 Avalanche (2014) which bugs me since you are on top of all the details.

Sorry for the trailer hitch bender but looks like it ended as well as possible.

flybefree - I'm just glad the scratches aren't on my driver's side door were I would see them every time I get in the truck.

JCQuick - I hope this doesn't come back to bite me someday, but I think it was a pretty mild tap. I hope I don't need to deal with an insurance company for another 12 years (that was the last rear-ender). It's interesting that GM sells a repair section - I better keep an eye on those tailgaters from now on!

Brian R - Thanks! I'm busted on the signature and it is now fixed. And before you bust my chops on the what I'm working on in the sig line - the loft is nearly done and I intend to get back to the lighting panel very soon :). Yeah, the accident could have been a whole lot worse.

Okay it is time to get some of these Holiday festivities underway.
Merry Christmas everyone. May it be a joyous one for you and yours.

Merry Christmas.
I have been having with drawls since I can not see your photos at work. Reading about your rear end accident had me thinking about some I have had, but I use a custom made trailer guide hitch out of 1/2" plate that has protected my truck from other vehicles and some of my own mistakes as well. I call it my "Anti-Tailgator". I do leave it on year round but you never know when it will happen. People do make mistakes but it ***** when you have to pay for it.

That would certainly do the job akdiesel

I had one of these on my old truck and I also had it on my new truck for exactly one day until I realized it was messing up the rear backup sensors (note the two middle bumps in the bumper are looking right at it. Now, I'm not sure if this particular step would have helped at all, but I always felt better with it back there on my blue truck.

2446-Avalanche-Rear-Step-01.JPG

I need to consider just keeping my drawbar in there 100% of the time like you for a little extra protection. Thanks for the idea.

I leave my ball mounts in all my vehicles for the same reason! My 1989 3/4T Suburban has been rear-ended twice, and it's one of the largest vehicles on the road. The brake lights are 6" square, too. First time the rear frame buckled as the ball went to the ground pushing a Mitsubishi Eclipse engine under it's firewall with a 5,000# hitch. Second time the 12,000# hitch didn't even get scratched, but totaled a Jeep Cherokee( and my back).

Nice Black Diamond Avalanche, Shopnut. Old one was in fantastic shape!

LOFT DOOR LATCHES, PROPS, AND PORCH LIGHTING…

There were a number of details left to do on the loft and I had some time to work on them. The doors got some tan vinyl trim to hide the raw door frame lumber.

2447-Loft-Apartment-035.JPG

These rubber latches have done a great job on the other loft so I duplicated them here.

2448-Loft-Apartment-041.JPG

I also found matching door props. I like these cause they have a lock button that I was able to locate on the bottom side where it is easier to reach from below.

2449-Loft-Apartment-044.JPG

Here are the doors all finished up, including the siding tin to the left and right sides.

2450-Loft-Apartment-045.JPG

So it was time to focus on the porch lighting. Four fluorescent fixtures will do the job and match those on the other side of the porch. Here are the frames before they were installed.

2451-Loft-Apartment-050.JPG

Two of the lights are installed in this picture. The fixtures came with complete with cords so I mounted a switched outlet within reach of each pair.

LOFT CEILING VINYL…

With all the lighting in, it was time to finish the porch ceiling and seal it from critters. First, I needed to install a bit of siding tin opposite the apartment wall.

2453-Loft-Apartment-065.JPG

Then the vinyl J-channel was installed.

2454-Loft-Apartment-067.JPG 2455-Loft-Apartment-069.JPG

Halfway done installing the vinyl planks.

2456-Loft-Apartment-070.JPG

And all finished up.

2457-Loft-Apartment-077.JPG 2458-Loft-Apartment-072.JPG 2459-Loft-Apartment-081.JPG

The loft is not completely finished since I need to re-install the water hose reel and also route some wiring for the big yard lights. But at least it looks mostly done for the close of 2013.

Wingnut65 - LOL. Thanks for your support through all the ups and downs around here. The Chevelle project is growing nearer - I can feel it in my (broken) bones! :)

akdiesel - Thanks. Just a few more details to finish on the loft and I can fill it up!

tinbender_66 - 2014 is the year! The year I finish Stage 1 of this place anyway.

machine_punk - Yeah, it definitely helps having some people interested in what you are doing. It does take quite a bit of time to report on all this stuff, but it's nice to reflect for a moment while compiling everything.

flybefree - I would have to consider buying a bigger fridge if that were the case! :)

And thanks to all for your continued support!

THE AVALANCHE COFFEE TABLE BOOK ARRIVED…

Since it was the last production year for the Avalanche, Chevy printed these books for the owners and personalized them for their specific vehicle. I'll have to admit, this book was even cooler than I imagined. Chevy really did a nice job on it.

Some general shots:

2461-Avalanche- Coffee-Table-Book-02.JPG 2462-Avalanche- Coffee-Table-Book-04.JPG

The dedication page.

2463-Avalanche- Coffee-Table-Book-06.JPG

They also included a picture of my specific model in the correct color and my very own window sticker.

2464-Avalanche- Coffee-Table-Book-08.JPG

The book is about 100 pages long and packed with interesting articles ranging from conceptual design to production.

2465-Avalanche- Coffee-Table-Book-11.JPG

It even has this 4-page fold-out of customer pictures that members submitted from the Avalanche forum. There was quite a cult following on this truck.

JCQuick - I'm sure I paid dearly for that book in some indirect way, but it's still a nice keepsake to go with the truck. I'm going on 22 years now of being a Chevy truck owner.

noelalford - It looks like the dealer didn't keep it inside since I turned in the old Avalanche keys - the blue paint is completely gone! Darn FL sun. I guess I traded it just in time! :)

Good find btw
I wonder if that Alvorada has a midgate? (can't tell from the pictures in the link) Pretty cool truck regardless.

ADDING SIDING IN THE PORCH AREA…

This siding job was really a lingering task from the big front loft build over a year ago. I couldn’t finish it until the side loft was built, but that is behind me now. Tar paper had been used to temporarily seal out the critters and it did a fine job at that. But it’s now time to install the final tan siding.

I cut some matching tan vinyl trim from channel I had on hand and used my slot punch to give it some mount holes

2467-Front-Porch-Siding-02.JPG

This picture shows where I routed some 12/3 cable across the span for the 3-way yard light circuit. I haven’t selected the fixtures or their location yet, but that is coming soon. One arrow points to the MC cable and the other points to the lower trim angle (which is drooping on far end) that hides the bottom edge of the ribbed siding.

2468-Front-Porch-Siding-03.JPG

Marching across with the 3 foot sections of siding.

2469-Front-Porch-Siding-06.JPG

And all done with that run.

2470-Front-Porch-Siding-07.JPG

Then I repeated the process above both side lofts.

2471-Front-Porch-Siding-09.JPG 2472-Front-Porch-Siding-16.JPG

Since everything was all sealed up, I decided to clean the ceiling to make the whole area look fresh again. It’s amazing how much dirt can accumulate on a ceiling!

2473-Front-Porch-Siding-17.JPG

THE PORCH IS COMPLETELY DONE!!! :bounce:
