Hey Guys, I am wrapping up my first set of Chas Parker jaws. I did not screw around and started with the big guy. These 8" Parkers were quite a learning experience. I just wanted to see if I still got it. Next is adding the pins and off to heat treat. I'll post pictures later when they on the restored vise.

How did Parker fab these jaws back in the day? Were they forged into shape. Your machined customs will be choice.

They used horizontal milling machines with custom built cutters. Not all custom cutters were made the same so each jaw was stamped to match each vise it was fit for. I bet they were real time consuming back in the day. I added a few pic's I found on Google that shows similiar kind of cutters and machines used.

oldldh it is good to hear you are feeling better.

Or search Google. Whichever.

Google will not show every brand vise on the vise thread, most times it just shows the 1st page. i have problems even bringing up my postings on it. i just chalk it up to my ignorance. this is why i post my bigger vise postings on the tool board and include wombat in the title. do u other guys have any tips on searching vises on google? thanks.

Best I could do with the **** pic in the ad. Why do people think they can sell anything with unreadable pictures? :wtf:

And No, I can't tell what it is...
attachment.php

FYI, this seller contacted me and said it was a unmarked 6"er.

This is where I go to find Prentiss information and he still has some holes in there where he needs some help. I think he has Reed, Parker, and other vises with more information too. I think he got spammed or a virus so really hard for us to add information now, but i'd help if I could figure it out or if somebody had an easier way to do so and wanted to start their own web site for just vises (vices).

Is Dayid a member of GJ or does he just use all the wisdom he gains from the vise guys in the know. too many to list and you all know who you are. I haven't seen too many vises go through without someone here finding some information on it.

Dayid has a great idea and with a few of the members catalogs and books somebody could make a nice book that might outsell the Anvils of America book that I think I saw for sale for $200 the last time I checked.

Oldie: I thought the PM was for the 5198 so on my radar today and i'm thinking I need to find 2 so I can have one for my bench too. hope you are felling better.

I wish the Dayid's Knowledge database person would update the site a bit more, or let me take it over o_O

It's a wiki. Sign yourself up and start adding content. I don't think he's added anything since last spring. I just checked and my account still works, so I tweaked a couple of the Reed listings.

Aaagghhhh... I just talked to a local guy that helps run an auction down in Spokane and found out they had a 8" Columbian bench vise that sold for $165 a few days ago... :shocking:

I knew about the auction but shrugged it off due to the hr and a half drive.

I'll play.... Big 6" imported junker (already has a crack in 1 jaw) "Star Gold" brand. Pretty much a Record clone, same as Galaxy and a couple of other imports based on the design. It's not total junk, it is heavy and pretty stout but not great by any means. Probably at least 30 years old. Next is a 3.5" Columbian, then a little unbranded 2.5", and finally my old Richards & Wilcox woodworking bench vise.

One day I'd like to pick up a good quality 6" or larger to replace the Star.

I believe that the little unbranded vise is a Stanley 1207 Defiance. Look on the end of the handle. They were made in the 1950s.

so the vise museum has a Railroad vise?? also a 5198 and maybe Filson's Reed 209? I know you said what it lacked in size it made up with your packing skills, but those vises need a warehouse to hold them.

I wish i had a railroad vise like the one mentioned but then i would need the train that goes with it so, sadly no, i don't have a railroad vise in the 600lb range.

Here is a shot of my overflow parking from the vise hut. These are the pristine examples that are either original or a personal masterpiece of labor.

Oldie, avert your eyes for these pics. The particular vises you seek are not in the pictures below. They are still out in the world, awaiting discovery by some lucky person with a preference to big, clampy, American iron:thumbup:

Hmmm, and what does the other half say about all they iron and the proximity to finished wood and on top of carpeting? I though my SWMBO was tolerant...

thanks for the teaser trailer of your vise museum.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I think you bought that many vises last week and none of them were in the pictures? maybe those are just for trading or in the other back room of the museum for now.

by the way is that Oldie's 5197 or 5198 or their little brothers? some pretty nice stuff and thanks for sharing.

the search continues for the 600 pound Railroad Vise that may be in an abandoned warehouse somewhere waiting to be used again.

Nothing.:bounce: thats a back office in the shop. All of the wood you see is furniture i've refinished over the years but don't have the room to have it out to use.

What's that I see peeking out from under the woodwork in Photo #1???

Me thinks I recognize a familiar snout...

HMMMMM!!!!

Now I see them...

Got flumoxed by the size and style of the visible snout...

They are still big four inchers...

Oh well, the search continues...

Beautiful collection bigcaddy. I have a feeling your just showing us the tip of the iceberg, kind of like Zoomie, just showing us one room of his house at a time.
3 questions. What size is the Red Seal, how wide are the jaws on the Wilton Swivel Jaw, and do you have the swivel base for the 800? Thanks for the eye candy.

The Red Seal is a 4", The Wilton SJ is 4 1/2" and the Wilton 600 has no base

boy that has all the old casting of the early 1900 vises and the Parker type piece to hold the screw in. it looks like it would clean up nicely and be a good worker, but a little difficult to mount on a bench with the bolt hole under the vise.

looks like a keeper to use or put up on a shelf. any idea of the age and maybe late 1800's and where it was made?

Edit: just saw one part above the bolt holes that might be a crack or weld so check that out if you are thinking of buying it.

one of the nicest wood vises I've seen. I really like that handle.

thanks for sharing

I inherited that after my dad passed. Has small chip near the top but not on the face. Gives it character I think. :) From my research on it, it dates to around 1910 or so. Also is a quick release - if you turn the handle to just the right position you can slide the entire front off quick and easy.

I believe that the little unbranded vise is a Stanley 1207 Defiance. Look on the end of the handle. They were made in the 1950s.

I'll be darned. Never noticed that on there but you are exactly right on the markings! But... it is a 1209. No idea on the difference.

What model is that vise above? I see them from time to time on www.wiltonviseparts.com but think they are newer. Is this model still being made?

Thanks very much for that information. I was having troubles adding the pictures. I will go and take a look at it today. I am usually afraid when advertisers say its an antique, it usually means it is worn out and useless and only any good for display!

That's either an older model 600 or 800. They don't make them where they screw into the back of the jaws anymore. They all screw in via the front (through the jaws)...

Yup, its a 600 from the 1980s if i remember the date stamp correctly. That came from a storage unit packed full of tools that a woman was liquidating for her aging/sick uncle.

I gave her 325.00 for it but the condition is like new and the money was going to good use. ( I met the old guy and the money was going to him. It wasn't just a nice story to tell to sympathetic buyers) We never did find the base and the old guy couldn't remember if he actually bought it with one or not.

Jason , Those photos of the 600S & N are not right. I believe the jaws on all the 6 & 8 inch machinists screw in from in back. Even current models.

Yep, Filson, that's a whopping good deal, but I ain't about to drive to N. Y. for anything less than that sweet Reed 209 that you want, but I want just a little bit more. It's going to be interesting to see who posts that sweet 209 first. And the hunt continues.
