I finally got a chance to take apart my newly acquired Rock Island 574 i picked up last weekend.
Notice anything funny about the first picture? It seems that the swivel base pivot bolt had backed out of the vise during years of use, causing the vise to move wildly around on its mounted post stand.
In order to fix the vise, the previous owner DRILLED
holes into the seam of the stationary jaw casting/swivel base and drove in ¼" bolts to keep it steady. The pivot bolt was sitting in the void beneath the vise, hardly identifiable because of the layers of rust on it.
The jaw tower also had had to be repaired from a previous blowout thread repair.
I guess that was easier and less obtrusive then unbolting the vise and tightening down that center pivot bolt again
Everything has been patched up and smoothed out, currently awaiting new jaw hardware and fresh paint.
