I finally got a chance to take apart my newly acquired Rock Island 574 i picked up last weekend.

Notice anything funny about the first picture? It seems that the swivel base pivot bolt had backed out of the vise during years of use, causing the vise to move wildly around on its mounted post stand.

In order to fix the vise, the previous owner DRILLED :eyecrazy: holes into the seam of the stationary jaw casting/swivel base and drove in ¼" bolts to keep it steady. The pivot bolt was sitting in the void beneath the vise, hardly identifiable because of the layers of rust on it.

The jaw tower also had had to be repaired from a previous blowout thread repair.

I guess that was easier and less obtrusive then unbolting the vise and tightening down that center pivot bolt again:confused:

Everything has been patched up and smoothed out, currently awaiting new jaw hardware and fresh paint.

Anyone see this guy on ebay that made urethane Parker vise jaws?

Unfortunatly he only made one size, for the 954-1/2 "B" (Assuming it would fit a 974-1/2 "B" too).

I'm tempted to buy a pair, would give me an excuse to use my Parker for working on gun stuff...

Jason, those should fit the vise they were made off of great. but I think KMScott mentioned the these were made in mating sets and had to account for the wear of the special cutters used to make them. So even with an exact model match, might not fit properly?

What is he asking for them? if low enough, It might be worth a gamble? :dunno:

Friday Night "Name that Vise"

Columbian 206 is my guess... missing the pipe jaws it looks like.

I think like $30... If you search parker vise on ebay you will see them. He has dimensions listed in the auction, I'm going to measure mine tomorrow and see how they compare. The "B" and later models were made by Union Tools, the surfaces are at least square instead of the crazy arcs on the older parkers. Fingers crossed the sizes are the same.

Here's a vice I picked up last summer for $25. I know its a mil;ling vice but I'm going to use it as a bench vise, if I ever get around to cleaning up the shop and making some room/re-arrangements. 6" vice but 24" overall. Not sure of the weight, but it's not something I'm putting on my bench milling machine.

This is my most recently purchased vise. A Chicago made Morgan 140. The one in 140 is obscured by the swivel locknut.

Lakeside53, you only have 3 posts on here and every one shows your awesome skills. I should send you my cast-off Columbians so you could play with old USA iron instead of imports.

Here's a little Russian made vise (supposedly). Really detailed for a table vise.

This originally was painted with black wrinkle paint. I love that look but don't know what brand or brands of paint carry that. Or if it is still available anymore. If anyone knows, please post. Thanks.

VA, I'd start with a cleaning with WD-40 (Kennedy actually recommends that for cleaning their wrinkle finish boxes) It looks pretty complete.

If you insist on painting, try an automotive store, I think some still carry black...

Drivesitfar and Outlawmws. Thanks for the info. I can work with that.

Drivesit, I will try to get you some pics, but mine are so crammed together it's hard to get good pictures. You can tell what they are but you don't get those good--north--south--east--west--3D effects. I have some already posted on earlier posts. If I can dig them up, I will repost some of them.

That should be a 60X where X is the jaw width, if it's 4" wide jaws it will be a 604. Stationary bases are 50X series and combo's with pipe jaws are 20X. The number is probably thre under that extra paint LOL.

I take it you are in the PA area? I thought about grabbing that for $40.

Or you could've found a different vise completely.

I think that's the one. The paint drip is the giveaway, but I believe the swivel nut bar was pretty bent(probably fixed). It was in Easton, correct?

Finally got me one of those stationary Stevens watchmaker vises a little over a month ago, to go with my swivel. Good thing to, those things have gone plum out of reason. Been 4 on E-bay in the last month. I bid on them and they left me in the dust. Here's the last one.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/JEWELERS-VI...8J6ybUAdFGR2AE%2F82t8%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

They weigh 8oz.. Should cost $.50 at the dollar a pound rule of thumb. Figures out to be about $475.80 per pound on that one.

Correction! Just weighed it on sensitive digital scales and it's 2 pounds 1 oz.. Big difference. You can't trust bathroom scales. Thought it felt heaver than 8 oz. That comes to $113.28 a pound. Now that's more like it. That puts the 209 at a measly $37,044.42. That's doable.

Here's mine.

Here's the other ones patented date. Same as the first. They even made a table version of this vise. I remember seeing it posted back in the 300s somewhere. If I van find it, I'll repost it for comparison.

Nice va.grouseman those are sweet. Definitely nice to add to the collection.

Does anyone here own that emmert swivel vise that recently sold for more than $800 on eBay?

Hi to all,

This is my reconditioned Paramo No2 Hi-Duty Vice.

According to The Workbench Book the Paramo vices were first produced during WW2.
Just after the Record Vice factory was bombed in 1940, there was a shortage of Vices.
It dawned on everyone by the vices of great importance for the war industry.
The British government gave permission to the foundry of F. Parramore & Sons Ltd. to produce record. Vices
The company which was the casting of steel tubes known could produce solid and precious folk vices with the knowledge and people of Record under the name Paramo.

I think my vise is one of the first series seen the old cast logo.
I have my vise repainted and equipped with new 'homemade' jaws.
The jack is (again) galvanized.

I never saw it. Man I would've love to have seen that one. I saw an Emmert Tiger, stationary a couple of weeks ago. Looked like it had some issues.

Here is a 2 inch table Wilton to keep you eyes on. Don't know how rare they are but you don't see them pop up very often.

Believe I'm going to shoot the moon on this one!-------That ought to get the bidding started.
