I love to see that grease. What's up front can be wiped off. What's more important is what's inside. Nick's just signifying what's inside, and that he's been through it, it's been cleaned, and it's been well greased. And to me, too much grease is like too much money where the screw threads are concerned.

:+1:

Nick does a great job, I was joking about his not having anything to wipe the excess off with...

I do like the anvil removal surgery....:D:D:D

I'd like to know how he did it, and how long it took...:bowdown:

As I said----"Ya Gun Gud, Bubba"

I hope Nick (Autopts) doesn't get upset with me for posting this but he's a genius. This Wilton bullet had a severely damaged anvil area, it was beyond function or repair. So what does he do? Makes lemonades from lemons. I think it looks terrific and shows resourceful ability on his part. Those little anvils are silly in my opinion anyway. Nice job Nick!

.

Thanks for your kind words. I knew when I saw it that the anvil had to go. Basically the vise itself shows little wear and works smooth.

Grease is good!!! If it is a display piece then I can see minimal grease. But for us users grease is good.

Let me try this again:

Here's one that the seller calls very good condition. No size, no descrip.

Any guess as to what it is?

If "Very good condition" includes a missing jaw insert, the back part of the swivel base broken off, and the swivel lock mising its handle... And thats jsut what shows in the pic... :headscrat

Clik: don't buy that vise. Outlaw saw what i see. some people's kids version of great shape. nil:dunno:

Jeremy: my Morgan 130 is a 3 or 3.5 inch jaw width and maybe 30 pounds. i'll measure it up and probably post pictures "as is" because i found another vise not on Dayid's vise wiki.

I would pass on the offer but if you want to know what it is, i'm pretty sure Columbian offered a vise like that. Its not cast but assembled from a bunch of metal plates welded together. They are so ugly, it would make Frankenstein turn away:D

It was made by Columbian. If it's what I think it is, it's fairly small for it's jaw size. If the jaws are 4", then I think it's a model #804. My grandfather has the same (or similar) vise, and there are at least 2 other members that have posted finding them as well. Their posts should be buried in here somewhere. One of them has a sticker still on it.

The vise is made from welded plate steel, not solid cast like most vises. I think they were made during the war while steel was being rationed. But that is just a theory, I have no proof.

Speaking of Dayid's vise site. Has anyone seen any real activity on it or does anyone know how to contact him? I've seen probably a dozen vises lately on this thread that are not on his site. I think he's been "Out for Lunch" for a very long time. We need to access it and take it over!!

I'll call Vladimir Putin and have him get right on it. I'm sure he can organize a ballot referendum authorizing a GJ annexation. :lol_hitti

B100 seems to be the only one that knows the secret to post anything now. seems like about 80% of the posts on his site are from members of GJ.

I bet there would be a list of guys on this thread that would like to take it over. i for one like having it to check out some vises i only hear make and model #'s on before i have to take a long drive to see it in person.

anybody know Dayid or is he a member here? or want to share the secret to posting on his site to update it?

Well I bought an Import tonight, but from across the cold pond... Made in Switzerland :)

An essentially new in box Zyliss, vise. These are like the shopsmith of vises. can be setup to do lots of different clamping chores, has an extension to make it longer, jaw pads, etc. etc...

This one is from 1986 (the guy I bought it from was 80 years old, setting up for a yard sale tomorrow, but had posted ads in CL!)

No visible use, and certainly no abuse!

I think this is still sold under the Gripmaster name, or maybe its just licensed? :dunno:

In any case, I generally see these for sale for anywhere from 80-135

I got this one for...

Wait for it

$5! :rocker:

Here's a link to an odd looking vise on CL. It has alot of info that could be helpful if added to a data base.

http://richmond.craigslist.org/tls/4321645642.html

I've always wanted one of those style of vises with deep jaws, but they rarely come up around me. I wouldn't pay close to his asking price due to the damage. I'm guessing the original owner was using it for more than sheet metal.

I created an account back when he first posted about it. It's a wiki, so by design it's a collaboration. Try creating an account for yourself and see if it works.

He was pretty active with updates until October 2012, then just sporadically after that, although he was back on last month again. I'm guessing he's moved on to other interests, but there's no reason why everyone else can't keep updating the site (assuming you can create an account).

Looks like Dayid closed the ability to create accounts and edit as of March 2012. Looks like too many people were monkeying with his baby.

(Quote)-----Locking down the ability to create accounts and the ability to edit anonymously. Too many spambots. Always nice to see idiots trying to ruin a good thing for everyone

Putin couldn't get in the site, but I bet you Edward Snowden could.

Yeah, I'd like one of those Pattern makers vises, like Clik posted (I'll never get used to calling them a SM vise, since I've NEVER seen one in a SM shop...)

Preserving the ad for Posterity (Sort of funny how he posted price and the in lien price don't align since hes so snitty abut lo-ballers:

YOST #503 VINTAGE BENCH VISE - $95

YOST Sheet Metal Vise [or Vice]: Model #503. Vintage USA vise made in Meadville, PA. YOST last made vises in PA in late 60s, before moving production to current facility in Holland, MI. Vise has decades more use available. Surface area of the jaws is amazing.

The hardened jaws are smooth faced, parallel, and formed into the ductile iron [i.e. they are not removable]. This type of vice is very rare, and is specially designed for sheet metal work, but the smooth jaws will not damage softer work pieces while still offering great clamping pressure. The locking handle for the swivel base is larger diameter than the main handle on most modern vises.

This vise was restored using electrolysis, so the vise is available for immediate prime and paint in your color of choice. The color you see is the bare metal, not any paint or primer. Main thread has been lubricated with anti-seize for smooth one finger operation of the main handle.

There is some damage to the vise on the tail section, but it does not affect operation. There are also some hammer marks on the front nose of the vise, but again, does not affect clamping ability.

For a full price offer, seller will include the following: 1/8" mild steel base plate, and the ½" diameter Grade-8 mounting bolts, washers, and nuts.

DETAILS:
Jaws are 4.5" wide by 2.25" tall.
Throat depth is 6.5".
Max opening is 8.5".
Handle length is 13"
Overall length nose to tail is 19"
Height is 11"
Estimated weight is 50 pounds

Here is a link to current model, which is nearly identical with exception that the new one has replaceable jaws. Note the price of the new one is well over $700 with shipping. Made in the USA.

http://www.yostvises.com/4-1-2-sheet-metal-vise-swivel-base.html

Asking $120 OBO. Due to the rarity of this vise, lowball offers will be flatly rejected.

No shipping on this item. The workbench is not included. Cash only please.

If ad is still posted, item is still available. Ad will be removed promptly when item is sold.

School me on the term "Pattern Maker" vise. Pattern for what?

Generally working wood for things like templates and mould cores, masters etc. Was a bit hazy on their functionality to start with too, but once you do something where one would be handy to have, you appreciate why they're such a handy thing to possibly have.

Clik: i'm guessing you saw the small chunk that is missing from the back of the dynamic slide? probably won't effect the use of it, but will hurt resale value if you bought and wanted to sell it later.

they also called these vises "coachmaker's" and Prentiss and i think a few other vise companies made these back in the early 1900's.

B100: i have tried to log on and will try to email Dayid, but i have looked to do that before without finding an email address or link to do that. anybody have his email that can PM me with it if not able to post on our thread?

I sent him an email asking about new user accounts and if it's ok to share out his email address. If I hear back I'll let you know.

Until then if you have any vises to add just ship them to me. I'll take pictures of them in my garage and post them up.:D

Hello Vise Friends,

All vises need a home to work & rest on. Whether it's an iron pedestal, tree stump, or work bench. Lately, I've been building custom, industrial work benches that feature a solid wood top, steel legs and a smaller size than the standard Lyon benches.

Another good use for a restored vintage vise is modeling. Since I can't afford to hire a Hollywood supermodel, I used a Bullet instead.

Mark: nice model for your new benches. i really like all the adjustments you figured in to your bench design.:thumbup::thumbup:

B100: I looked again on Dayid's and not any way to contact him unless maybe if you are clever enough to find him on one of the other forums he belongs too.

thanks for the offer to take the pictures.:lol_hitti

I really wished he (Dayid) had of filled in the blanks on some of the ones that he did post. Like weight, jaw width, age, type of base, etc.. I guess it's because people posted pictures and no stats. But it's good stuff to know if you spot one that peaks your interest, that your not quite sure about or have never seen.

b100-----Can we just ship you pictures, and you take pictures of the pictures and post those. My back is killing me.

Yep, This^^^: Its more for carving, shaping of larger chucks of wood/material, hence the tall jaws and ability to OPEN WIDE; something sheet metal doesn't need, as if you clamped down on a sheet metal assembly, all your likely to do is crush it... the height allows the pattern maker to work comfortably. A std flush-with-the-top of a bench wood vise is not at it's best in that situation.

Not a vise, but vise related.

I found a mounting bracket for a 4" blacksmith's vise out in the wild today. I've had a 4" B'smiths vise in storage for 20yrs, but no bracket for it. Now I do ............ finally.

The pic is "as found". It'll get a bath in degreaser then oiled soon.

Hey Outlaw did you get that from the bay area? I've seen it on Craigslist out here for the last couple months.

GUYS

I found a reed 208 with a break out of the back of the slide which ***** MAJORLY..

I don't know what is a fair price to offer the guy. I told him $150 since it's broken. But I feel like he won't take that. I really don't want to pay too much for something with such a bad break in it. It's a shame it had to be broken..

I will try to repair it, but it's never the same. Kind of like a broken bone. It's tough to hide a break on the slide too :(
