Hey, I just picked up an 8 drawer. But the Craftsman logo does not have the wings. Would mine be older or newer?

Check my previous post for an 8 drawer.
John
Really? Well, I have 2 of those 3 drawer's... but now I'm going to need to find an 8 drawer.

Yes sir. That would be a cool setup. Good luck

That's what I thought. The matching bottom was anything from 3 to 8
drawers. They are not a standard size box.

Here's my new purchase.. It's up for sale--but if I could find a matching box which this would sit on top of--I'll keep it and would love the combo setup!!

Craftsman 10-drawer--

Before (From Pennsylvania via UPS)

....as you guys stated above.. The blue lettering of "CRAFTSMAN" is painted directly over the red.. It wiped off. I used Simple Green and Easy-Off Oven Cleaner to get the box spotless. The Easy Off worked great--but the paint was so delicate that it basically rubbed right off without any effort. I'm not too concerned about it--the thing looked so horrible before. In reality-covering this box with a simple wax would be ideal for it's appearance as far as I'm concerned. Some nice drawer liners--and she'd be perfect..
Like you asked above--I'd like to see what a bottom box looks like with alot of drawers.. I think most were only 2-3 drawer boxes with a large storage area on the bottom.. I'm not certain though..

I was trying to reply, maybe screwed up.

JDT, that 8 drawer roller is probably a bit older, or early in the winged oval logo era. late 40's I'd guess? I have not seen that one in my available catalogs though...

ps: nice find!

A nice old Waterloo three drawer box, with side table for free. I just picked it up tonight and haven't had a chance to look it over. If anyone knows anything about it, let me know.

Scrubbed, scraped and scoured. Primed and painted. Got lucky and found a set of Waterloo casters for only $5 at Summit Racing.:rocker:

I didn't do anything fancy, just cleaned and painted. I wanted the drawers a darker grey (the can said "Smoky"... it's a little darker than it came out in the picture). I think it looks pretty good for a beat up old box.

Can't tell you much about the my buddy, but my dad has the same exact box he got it for Christmas around 1980-82ish, just plain old toolbox that has done its job for all these years.

Great assortment of "old" tool boxes everyone and amazing restorations in a short amount of time too.

here is another small tool box i had to buy. not sure of the maker, but the 75 year old owner has had it about 50 years and it came from Minnesota. it's very solid and all the rivets in great shape and only a little rust under the little piece of carpet padding he had on the bottom.

i think it will be a nice box for my Milwaukee hand grinder that came to me without a box.

any ideas of the maker or are these homemade? year made?

Can you tell me anything about it? Ive never heard of My Buddy until now. Theres no stamp anywhere.

Sorry, but not really. A quick search shows they were made by Disston. Other than that I have no idea. I'm not a huge fan of tray style boxes, thus I don't follow them much. I've seen that folded front indent design before. It may also have side handles of the same fashion. If you like it, by all means go for it.

That looks 1000 times better. Great job

Cameraon, Stunning difference! great save!

Dif, I think that small box is a shop made box, possibly by a sheet metal worker, since it looked like it was galvanized and riveted.

I was just given a similar vintage Proto side cab, pretty beat though. Saw it at the swap meet this weekend, had a $5. price tag on it. When I stopped to look at it, seller told me I could have it for free. Said OK, let me get a 2 wheeler, he said don't bother, my kid will carry it to your truck for you! Gave the kid a couple bucks, I was only about 150' away. Thinking of cutting the lower open part off, and setting the drawers up on my big lathe, to store tooling.

Dang, that is very cool. Don't think I have ever seen a proto side cab like that. I'm a bit surprised they even bothered to use dual drawer pulls. Maybe just keeping with theme. What are the dimensions? One thing you may want to check out is what structural implications cutting the bottom off may have. The box or C channel form of the bottom joints drastically adds torsional rigidity to the box. Without the bottom panel you will be relying on the slides to keep the sides together. Just my 2¢.

I think it is 21" wide X 18" deep, didn't measure height but can if you want, drawers measure just over 16" deep inside. It has rails for the bottom door that I don't have, right underneath the bottom drawer, and the plan is to attach some plywood to the rails to maintain the strength if I do cut it down. I have a similar vintage roller cab, in need of some slides and clips, and figured I could rob them from this if nothing else, but the slides are different. My roller has the Waterloo style with the clips, this side box has stamped dimples that need to be pried out to remove the drawers.

That looks just like a cornwell box in design that I have and I bet it has the same goofy style slides. The size is a bit odd for a side cabinet, as well as the fold down door. I wonder if it truly is a side cabinet or a bottom box for a machinist size chest. Do the edges have bent over lips for hanging off a main box?

That's a cool side box, please don't chop it!

It's really in sad shape, no door, holes and dents everywhere. There's a reason he was only trying to get $5., and gave it away as soon as I showed interest. I really need the storage for the lathe, so barring a last minute stay from the governor, I think it's going to get cut up, sorry.

Can you check it for a model number stamping? If it is 20" wide I have feeling it is a bottom box vs a true side cabinet. The lack of hanging lip helps to support this hunch.

Ragtop: that is very cool box and looks like a side box so attach to a cabinet if you can instead of chopping it up. your box your choice, but that is one of the cool ones IMHO if it isn't rusted out that i couldn't see in the picture.

Free? i guess that deserves a You **** award even if you did have to pay a little for delivery.

Going by memory, from when I was measuring it earlier for possible lathe use, it's 21" wide, I'll confirm tomorrow. Are these stamped on the back somewhere?

A semi educated guess would say yes it should be. Although I have never personally owned a Proto box it being stamped would follow the convention of the same period Mac, Matco and Cornwell boxes of which I'm fairly certain all came out of the same factory as that Proto. Check the back corners with a strong light to your back. It most likely is stamped model, year made and COO.

Edit, attached is a pic of a Cornwell box that has the same build characteristics as that Proto. Even the drawers handles have the same construction.

2 Years ago I bought & cleaned up this '49 3 drawer Craftsman top box. Except for a nasty crease in the lid and the piano hinge being poorly welded, I kinda liked it and began looking for the bottom piece.

Last year I found this POS and figured maybe I could bring it back to life. It sat for about 8 months until 2 weeks ago. I didn't realize how bad it was, thats all bondo, both side's :scared: and the bottom is so rusted out, tomorrow I'm headed to pick up a steel plate and have a buddy weld it. I haven't begun to work on the door yet :(

But, alas, last week I found this on Craigslist. It belonged to the guy's Grandfather, original owner and kept in his garage until he passed recently. Other than some surface rust and the missing handle (which I have) it's in decent shape. A little added bonus (I love it when people do this), the dude took all the tools, all except the old stuff he didn't want (he, he, he). So, I ended up with 2 boxes filled with some vintage snap on sockets, Herbrand sockets, gear pullers, an old, still in a blue box, Craftsman Knock Out Wheel Pullers, Tons of old flashlight style light bulbs and electrical connectors, a square and some pliers that I have no idea what they would apply to. Not to mention alot of little misc. ****. So now I'm keeping this set, will finish bondo box and sell it along with the first top box ( I be running out of room). Maybe some day I'll get around to restoring these too.

Nice find on that second set of boxes! The "Blue Bird" tool is a set of battery terminal spreaders.

Awesome boxes and nice find on the recent acquisition! I've got that same set - top and bottom - from my grandfather. My top box doesn't have a handle on the lid and no ribs for the craftsman logo... My top box is getting cleaned up now - it's in decent shape compared to the bottom box. The bottom will need lots of work and new casters... Any suggestions where to get those?
