Hi there.

I figured I would finally join now that I actually have a garage worth posting about. My family and I recently moved for work to Southwest Florida and one of the major requirements I had in looking for a new house was a big *** garage.

Yes- it was actually written that way on our check list.

Well- we found a great house with a semi attached 1100 sq foot garage that definitely fit the bill. We moved in early in January of this year. Sounds like a great start to a new chapter in our lives, right?

30 days after moving in there was an electrical fire in the garage and the smoke caused extensive damage to the contents which included 8 motorcycles, all my tools, my cabinets, shelves, tool chests, refrigerators, tire changer, compressor, tractor, and a boat load of motorcycle parts. Did you know that soot can cause flash rusting to any metal? It can turn a brand new drill press in to a heavy, rusty, door stop in less than 24 hours. Sounds like a bad story now.

But there is a silver lining to this headache of a situation revolving around insurance and claims adjusters.

I get to redesign my garage the way I want it!!

I will try to start up a build thread to get input and confirmation of ideas I have when I can. This site has been great for sparking ideas and inspiration.

Welcome to the GJ from downunder.
Did you find out what was the actual electrical issue that caused the fire?
As you say there is a silver lining, all the best with your rebuild.

It was either an item that was plugged in shorted or the outlet itself.

The electrician re-wired and installed all new outlets so we should be good.

Thanks for the welcome.
I plan to make this the garage I always wanted- but apparently my wallet and my brain do not agree with my desires sometimes.
