thanks for the link to cheaper ones if i need any ZR.
The ones at WallyWorld for $9 are the thinner (1/8in) ones, the 1/4in version they have is pushing $20.

Just be sure to look closely at the roll if you have an aversion to the flowery pattern ones etc. Although they appear to be only patterned on one side ;)
The bright colors sure beat the usual black drawer liners for toolboxes.

I picked up these two boxes this evening.

The top chest is a 1965 KRA 58B box.

The portable box is a KRA 30A from 1964.

I got a package deal on the pair. I will probably re-do and sell the small box to help finance the cost of the top chest.

I really like that top box. Do you know the model number by chance? I don't remember seeing that before. Almost looks like a heavy duty road chest. Are those fork lift slots on the bottom? Is your middle box the full 18" deep or just ~16"?

nope don't know the number. can't find it. it is a truck/road chest. the kind with the front flap covering the drawer fronts. forklift slots? i don't think so.
the forks would have to be really thin and narrow to fit. the middle box is only 16" deep, top and base are 18".

while i'll buy some tools and maybe some other things at goodwill i'll draw the line at saving $9 and maybe getting a sweaty "hot" yoga mat that was never wiped down. call me picky, but if i'm going to give my toolbox and tools a cushion i don't want the drawer to smell when i open it.

cheers

That is interesting. It should be stamped on the left hand side, lower left corner facing the side. The reason I asked about fork slots is because the way those rectangular feet/runners are going front to back compared the more typical left to right on a top box. :dunno:

:+1: I'm cheap and for a good reason, but even I have my limits.

I see values of these craftmans machinist all over the place. What would a good fair price for it in avg condition?

I paid $40 for one a couple years ago and thought it was a fair price.

edit: is that one missing the front cover? That would reduce the price.

And now it's at home, ready to get put back to work.

I haven't seen too many of them other than here on GJ but, for reference, the seller wanted $40 for this. The lettering came after I bought it.

From what I have learned the only changes were to the slides of the newer ones.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I wouldnt paid the $70 either. Glad I'm getting it on low end. $25 and its identical to my other. That works for me.

For me it would depend on how the slide "came off". If it truly just needs to be put back in the channel that is no problem, but if the channel or slide is somehow distorted or damaged I'd probably pass. Also check the bottom inside given the amount of rust on the top I wouldn't be surprised if it has spent time outside and thus is rusted out from the inside.

There is alot of pitting on the top lid and since the chrome has rusted over I'd say it has been going for a while. In the last pic, left hand front corner, you can see the bottom compartment is rusted pretty good too. Check it out, but I'd be prepared to pass if I was you. Once rust gets between the double walls of a box it is next to impossible to get out. My above statement still stands about the drawer slide issue. Anyone with a bit of mechanical competency could easily put a slide back on track. Not so much if something is actually damaged. There are so many of those boxes out there for not a whole lot more IMHO I don't think it is worth the time and effort to try to bring one back. Unless someone is just looking for a project to hone their skills. Just my 2¢

I agree with the issues and I'm prepared to walk away if to far gone. I also agree with the with resto. I really only planned to freshen it up and do some cosmetic work. I had no stripping it down to bare and bringing it back. I know I got to strip outer of mine cause someone paint the outside gray with a brush. I got it a long time ago from friend and I've had it at my dads for 10+ yrs Its in same condition I got it in. Maybe the one I have is just as bad. I do got to get a look at mine tonight and see how that inner slide attaches. I don't know if he broke off the inner or outer slide popped out. I meet guy tomorrow so will see.

That MBC box I just got is going to take some work. Almost 50 yrs of gunk and surface rust. That's where ill spend sometime and effort to bring that one back.

I got this SO tool box today at a pawn shop for $15. It has been repainted so all I can make out on the back is A 60. Anyone know more about this?

Looks like a KRA-21 from the 60's. Good deal. It was a standard box they made since the 30's IIRC, a few changes along the way, but the overall style remained.

Do the sides have trunk handles on them?

looks like a kra21, fairly modern, should have a mfg. stamp on the rear. The shape of the drawer pulls, the bead on the slide rails where they're welded, and the style of the slide itself (if original) will help you determine the series

There are handles on the side and it is HEAVY unlike a Cman box the same size. I will be able to see what the numbers are when the paint comes off.

Yea, it's a KRA-21 They called them a mechichest or something like that. :headscrat The same design was used for many a years. I think they still even make a variant of it. I've heard they are hefty (never seen on in person). I guess they provided the side handles in addition to the top for a good reason. I like how you get 2 drawer +top compared to the standard carry box with just a removable tray. Enjoy it

Taumac,

I have that same Crafty machinist chest with the Crown logo.

I bought mine new in 1965; it was finished in wrinkle brown paint with dark brown felt drawer liners.

For the record, the Crown logo was in use from about 1959 to 1977, but other Crafty logos overlapped this same period. That said, your Crafty machinist chest would likely fall in this range. I suspect these chests were made by Kennedy, but I have no proof.

These machinist chests are great for storing precision and micro tools. Most of the drawers are shallow but a few are a little deeper. Also, these chests fit nicely on your workbench because they have a small footprint and keep all your precision and smaller tools (i.e. measuring tools, scripes, awls, punches, small chisels, hooks & pick, precision screwdrivers, hex keys, feeler guages, etc) near your vise.

Great score!

Just picked up these Snap-On KRA-270A cabinets from CL. I started to pull off the homemade parts overlay on one of them and there's a real one behind it (last two pictures). How are these tool boards typically done? It looks like these are just vinyl applied to particle board? I'm not sure if they came that way from snap on or not.

O, those are cool. I didn't know they made them for precision measuring tools, only seen the typical puller/hammer and what not setups thus far. I remember a while back someone was offering to make the boards or at least a mat for those. Maybe try searching on it.

Picked this up with a decent amount of SK, snap on, husky and craftsman tools in it for 200$.

Bottom box numbers are hard to make out but year is 74

Top box is a mb80 (see tag)

Any info anyone can provide on these boxes is appreciated
